Ken Levine: Industry needs to work on making PC market more "broadly successful"

2K Boston's Ken Levine has asked for the industry to start working on making the PC market more "broadly successful". Levine finds that he is more comfortable when sitting with a mouse and keyboard two inches away from the monitor.

"I wish the industry could find a way to make PC gaming more broadly successful," said Levine. "There are so many challenges for PC gaming - the complications from systems specifications to the drivers - most people look at PC games and say, 'What are you talking about?'"

More and more PC exclusives are now moving over to consoles, even Majesty 2 was recently announced for the Xbox 360. This isn't helping the PC market.

But at the same time, more and more console games are ending up on the PC. It's a multi-platform world we live in now.

They simply need to make pc games they way only they can succeed.
By making use of the options you have on pc, that consoles are limited to.

a good gaming pc got far more memory and a far better GPU then consoles do.

(mine got 6gb, and a dualgpu card with 1 gb of gddr5)
Its time to start developing games for the powerhouse pc's again, that will allow them to build games that outrun the consoles, and in that way pc gaming will become attractive again.

In februari Sims 3 will arrive, it will feature real time neighbourhoods, instead of only the house you manage, thats an example of what pc's can do, but consoles cant, so thats a start.

What are you talking about, any given PC game will out muscle it's console counter version in terms of performance and graphics. Making use of the PC power isn't the issue, and no it isn't piracy and drivers either. Both of these issues are not new and has been with the industry since the birth of the personal computer and now all the certain it's an issue!? What else is Boston 2K gonna complain about next, math is too hard? Wake the hell up.

The truth is if you can't make a decent game on the PC then you sure as hell can't make a decent game on the console either. Console games are a lot harder to develop for and risk is much greater.

Personally, I'll take the PC game without the "broad success" attached. I'd certainly like the devs to do well, but I fear the steps taken to "broaden" would result in mediocre experiences.
