How the Xbox 360 beat the PS3 on Black Friday

Gamer.Blorge:

"Microsoft has really done a great job of working with various retailers this holiday weekend. I haven't seen practically any advertisements from Sony's camp. Could they have fallen asleep or maybe Sony is putting all of its stock into Christmas?

Regardless, if Sony doesn't drop the price of the PS3, the console could have a very difficult time catching up to Microsoft. On a side note, I did manage to snatch up a 640GB hard drive from Staples for $69, by waltzing in around 5 p.m. Did any of our readers have any luck during Black Friday?"

1 - "The humorous part about the whole Black Friday event was that none of the Xbox 360 models sold for less than what they normally do. "
LOL, so so True.

I was going to buy an Xbox, but than figured that most I am saving is 50 bucks, and I am getting 7 Free games that I am not ever going to play. I mean who wants a Lego Indian Jones and other mediocore games!

If it was bundled with Gears 1 and 2, then maybe, but Microsoft did pull a Wool over People's eyes. There is no doubt about that.

ALso I figured that I going to need a Wifi adpater and then I said No I am not buying a $100 adpater for $300 xbox.

Yes and if they play live in 2 years they will have paid the same amount for a 60 gig 360 as an 80 gig PS3. 3 years they will have paid $50 more. Most people don't look at the big picture. Not to mention the hundreds of dollars they would have to spend to bring the 360's features up to par with what the PS3 comes with out of the box.

Who wants Lego Indiana Jones and Fung-fu panda?

Kids do!

Remember, MS and Sony's focus for this holiday were to get kids to want their system. That's why Sony came out with LBP... remember?

1.4 - i suppose a wi-fi adaptor is essential
when you live with mom and dad and have no say were the router goes. i have my own house, can easily afford a wi-fi adaptor, have a wi-fi router, but still prefer to connect via cables. and i can have the router where i want it. it's my house after all. all these people talking about wi-fi, wont have to worry when they grow up and move out.

Pull the wool over people's eyes? You can't fool the willing. People didn't pay less for any hardware, but many got a better value. Getting a console at $199 or $299 with 4 to 7 games included is a value, not a ripoff. It doesn't matter how you spin it.

yeah and then they brign it hoem and fidn out they need to spend more then it would have cost to get a PS3 to get the $199 xbox to get online gaming, be wirless, and get a hardrive where they can save more then games saves adn install there games. Shoppers are morons and Microsoft is taking advantage of all you lemings.

joevfx > This might be a shock to you, but some people just want to play games and don't care about anything else. For those that want all those extra features, the option is there to buy them. The only validish point that you made was the cost of the wireless adapter - that truly is disgraceful.

For the last time... Alot of people will never play online games! Some people just buy the system to play the games and nothing more. The online stuff is non-existant to them.

Or they could have the same misconception I used to, where I believed that online gaming made you the ultimate nerd. So I avoided it entirely with Ps2 and Xbox 1, and waited a year until I tried it on the 360!

4 - Gee, lets see....
Microsoft: Drop price on all versions of system, and for the Pro, include 2 games from Franchises people have heard of-- Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones, for NO EXTRA COST.

Sony: Double the size of the HDD to 160 GB, even though most average consumers wont understand the value of more storage, and include a game most people have never heard of-- Uncharted? Whats that? Then, RAISE THE PRICE $100.00 over the already most expensive system on the market, while the US economy is in recession.

You don't HAVE to buy anything, you get everything you need to play the games. This might come as an absolute shock to you, but quite a lot of people just want to play games, they don't want all the extra bells and whistles and that's who the Arcade is for.
If you want to go online and do all that, there's a model there just for you. No scam, just a choice.

What are you talking about SCAM? Let me tell you about the real Black Friday SCAM. The cheap non 2.0 Blu-Ray players. That's the real SCAM. The 360 can play games just as advertised. Most people run a network cables to their entertainment center and use a HUB. Most Stereo receivers use the network and are not wireless. Just run a cable "and you're done".

Kushan, you're right, you don't have to buy anything like you said...twice.

So if you don't buy anything extra that means you can go play Gears offline, Halo offline, etc. So if you do pay for the online, I would hope you don't go into the marketplace, cause you sure don't have a hard drive to really download anything. So yea, don't buy anything extra, just play the 360 local or singleplayer, and completely bypass the online service that gives the 360 one of it's few advantages. :)

I missed out on radio shack selling the DS3 for $25 but I did get me a nice 42" samsung plasma for $650. $100 off regular price. The 50" was $250 more and wasnt really worth it. I could have gotten an LG 42" plasma for $600 but chose the samsung because I like their quality.

12 - Like I said before I could use "CHEAP" as the spin word, or "SPAM" which is good marketing and adertising in fanboy language, but I'll add a little more
Come on you have to give them props, they have been able to use their deep pockets anyway they know how to make the 360 a pretty good choice as NICE package this holiday.

I've heard it all before..When MS and the Xbox 360 does better than expected..we get this from doubters..

1.Price Drop because of desperation
2.It was expected they are cheaper
3.Xbox 360 fans are stupid, immature and young(wasting their money)

How about for once..just admit

1.MS's strategy with the 3 SKU's is actually working. The SKU's are upgraded with bigger HDDS over time and such but people are buying whatever SKU fits their habit.

2.Ms's Advertising + Marketing strategy is on point. They market the big Exclusives very well I'd say. I know some complain about their PS3 games not making it on Mountain Dews, while some don't wanna look at Halo 3 Dew cans but that is the whole purpose of Marketing..(take a course why dontcha). Big edge if done right.

3.MS's strategy was to come out first(We all know they rushed it for good reason, at the same time jeopardized the 360's hardware quality. Somehow, they have been able to sustain sales. It has not been perfect with the RROD, but the 3 year warranty was swift and the year head start sorta softened that blow.

RROD is the BIGGEST AMMO against the xbox 360(just come to N4G) but like I said, with the year head start, they were able to minimize the damage and soften the disaster. With that said everything down below has and will help sales but some will continue to state "Xbox 360 sells because it's CHEAP".

+3-year warranty

+NXE/XBL - Came at a good time which allows HDD installs that lessens Heat, Noise, and Loading Times.(optional)

+Falcon + Jasper's chipsets will also hasten the death to RROD.(Continue to knock on wood though, which has become daily ritual I'm sure)

+Huge Gaming library with more diverse library than the competition with Big Blockbuster Sequels.

+Same Multiplatform games on other consoles

+3 Different SKU's at a decent Market Price(though upgradable if you buy the cheapest, you'll just have to bendover a lil, so save, until you get the one, you really want.)

Anyhow there is more to it why the 360 is selling, it's not just it's cheaper. It has always been cheaper and have slowed down at slow times but continues to sell.

The arcade is a scam because it doesn't have a harddrive which most people eventually do end up buying for over $100, and if you want to play online you ahve to pay $100 for a network adapter, it doesn't even come with a ethernet cable if you wanted to hardwire the sucker.

The Arcade cannot play original Xbox titles as well. The pro is where its at, the arcade is a scam. Parents buy the Arcade looking at the price point, but when their kids complain that they can't play with their buddies online, which is the biggest draw for the Xbox 360, parents will find out that they have to shell out much more money.

Now, I am not saying this is the case for every single Arcade, but you guys have to agree that this will be likely the case for most of the uninformed parents out there.

13.1 - False...
Buy a HD used at GameStop...

@imaballa99
I didn't say E-bay. That's crazy - no warranties. How many HDs have you gone through? I still have my original 360 now 3+ years old and my HD never died. The truth is that you would only have an issue if you were constantly writing and deleting files. This may become more of an issue now that you can load games onto the drive and a HD can only hold a handful of games. As you keep uploading full games and deleting them you may have issues down the road, but if you are only using the drive for game saves, and don't do many deletes you will be fine buying a second hand drive.

and I should also mention that I am a Storage Architect.

do you know how bad of an idea that is? HDs have a lower life expectancy rate in comparison to other CE products. Why would you want to buy a used harddrive that could crap out on you any sec?

Buying a used controller is fine but a used harddrive is risky. That is why not many ppl buy used hard drives off ebay.

glad most in here think that the consumers can't read that on EVERY arcade sku it says no harddrive included. also all the pictures of the arcade sku are without a harddrive. let me put it this way: 400 bucks you can get a 60gig 360 and depending on what you want you can find great games for that 360 for cheap- used or new. rb6v2 20 bucks brand new at target is a good example. it also comes with a headset, ethernet wire, hd cables, and shoot 2 new batteries in the box. if someone is just now getting into "next-gen" gaming the 360 is an excellent choice. my scenario right here describes why for gaming the 360 is still a great value.

17 - Is all about advertising and the games
the xbox 360/PS3 is in the same situation that the dreamcast/PS2 was back in early 2000. The Dreacast was out earlier, had tons of exclusives, cheap price, and first ever console with internet/modem intergration. But it was no matched for the PS2 because Sega was broke, advertising was weak, and most importantly, little to no Third party Support(Madden anyone?). Some people, mostly fanboys, were thinking the 360 was going down the same path as the Dreamcast because of past history but they forget this is Microsoft that they are dealing with. And you can clearly see that the right marketing, price, huge third party support and yearly killer appps like Halo and Gears is too much for people to resist. And this past few months and especially over the Black Friday weekend proves that Microsoft is doing eveything they can to gain marketshare and more importantly, brand recongnition. And if you think Microsoft will just sit on their couch and let the competition gain an advantage in 2009 and beyond, you are fooling yourself. They can smell blood and is going for the kill. I expect huge things from Microsoft in 2009.

I know how they beat the PS3. Its cheaper, and they advertise the hell out of it. My parents bought me 360 games this year because they thought I had one, even though I don't. The people who know little about video games only know what they see, and what they see are Xbox360 commercials/ads/product placements/what have ye. All hail the marketing machine that is MS.
