1 - This is a BLU RAY compatible disc if anyone is unaware
" and therefore the Pioneer discs can be read on BD players, the company said. "
It is hence a 400 gig BD disc
PS3 is a full future proof console
1 TERABYE blu ray in 2013
Oooo
@kratos below
The discs are much cheaper to produce and is made from the very same BLU RAY tech. These discs are 10nm based (10x cheaper to produce) and is COMPATIBLE with ALL blu ray players
I repeat 100% COMPATIBLE with all BLU RAY players (even the OLDEST ONES)

I can see myself getting a BD drive for my PC in the not to distant future.
Edit: Im waiting for a BD burner you be able to burn at least dual layered 50 GB BD's and have the capability to read those 400 GB BD's I guess if they penetrate the market.

But it says read only. Are they making a burner for it too? I think 400GB is overkill for movies but it would be nice to have an optical disc I can burn that much data to. A 100GB BD is enough really.

Why will Blu Ray wait so long to get a terabyte storage in 2013, when TeraDisk will be available in 2010 and it is a a Dvd 1.2mm with 200 layers? And the bad thing is the Dvd will still be half the price of blu ray.

I think it's safe to say Blu-ray will be around for a while now! It would be almost pointless for anyone to come out with anything else for at least 5 years minimum after this hits.

lol, I agree 100% with you, Kijima would find a way to fill even a 1TB disk just to say that it's not enough space to get more publicity!
Didn't anybody tell him that when consumers buy a game they don't care how many GB's on a disk it fills, all they care about is how good the game is!!
I remember back in the day on the megadrive when sometimes they put on the front cover of the packaging "24MEGA BYTES" (or whatever figure it was) if that is the best selling point of the game, then I'd be worried about buying that game!

1.12 - bring it on pioneer!
with that much space they can put everything as in everything in it. like for example, if we have that technology right now the movie darknight on bluray can have a lot of extras like a full batman game related to the movie and they can even put batman begins in it too and a ton of features and extras or if it is a naruto series, they can put the entire 500 episodes in one disc. man oh man! being a ps3 owner keeps getting better and better. wooot! i'm loving it!

"The technology of the super multi-layer read-only disc is based on Blu-ray Disc (BD) with a breakthrough in material of reflective layers, according to Pioneer High Fidelity Taiwan. The specifications of the pick-up head (PUH) of the disc is the same as those for the PUH of blank BD discs, and therefore the Pioneer discs can be read on BD players, the company said." I guess Kojima Can't complain anymore about Disc space if his next game is a PS3 exclusive.

2.2 - This is going to be a terrible thing!
Think of how much longer Kojima's cut scenes are going to be in MGS5 with a 400GB disk! :)
Don't hurt me, I love the MGS series, and it wouldn't be the same without the cinematic cut scenes, but I do wish he'd cut back a bit in some places.
With the PS3 using 400GB BD disks to 360s 9GB DVD then the PS3 could potentially have a huge advantage. but the key word is potential. so far not much has really used the potential of the 50Gb BluRay disks to really stand out from what the 360 can do.
& to the guy who said 400GB was overkill, you are very short sighted, I bet when you bought yours first PC you thought to yourself "wow 10 mega byte hard drive, I will never be able to fill this bad boy"
Think of the possibility of entire tv series on one disk in HD. and i'll be first in line for Star Wars in HD and at this rate it could be all on one disk.

For a variety of reasons spanning over a few games, SCIV being one of them (I'm sure many remember that) As well as quite a few other games [other than that one I can't remember off the top of my head, 2 AM here.]
Mainly when I say "Shaft" I'm talking about DLC "things" that should have been in the game in the first place, refer to SCIV. Not to be confused with developers adding extra songs, (As seen in RB2 as well as GH:WT).
[Apologies, not as coherent as I would be if the sun were up and if I had ample amount of sleep.]

Agree with your second statement there lokmessier. Just because some greedy publisher nickels and dimes it's own customers doesn't mean Digital Distribution is flawed. I'm pretty sure most of the content that became available for SCIV was already on the disk ( In other words you already paid for it) and Namco forced users to pay to unlock it which is of course BS. One reason i never bought the game.

If you order today, receive a commemorative RRoD Ceramic Plate with gold trim and a stand so that you may display it in front of your friends and family. All of this for only $19.95, yes thats right $19.95.

Did you know it takes several years until it gets picked up by the mainstream due price limitations.
So did you know this may not be widely used until like 7 years from now ?

Do you really have nothing better to do then to bad mouth a piece of technology?
This gives the PS3 even more potential! but the key word is potential, lets hope we see this potential utilised in some awesome games.
Extra storage can mean better games, it means less limitations, more storage for hi res tectures, and many other potential improvements. However the key word is "CAN" take a look at the N64, the cartridges were pitiful in capacity compared to the PS1 CDRom Drive. But that didn't stop the N64 having some amazing games developed for it. Just get used to your repeated textures.

3.4 - Actually...
The Article Reads that by...
2010 to 2012 they will aim to make a 400GB Rewritable Disk,
By 2013 they aim to make a 1TB Disk,
It is 2008 now and they HAVE produced a 400GB Blu Ray Disk, I don't expect to see it in store tomorrow, but it's a possibility over the next few years it might happen.
Also as far as costs go, The readers are what cost money as in the CD laser, the DVD laser, the Blu Ray Diod (I think that's what they call it.) The actually disks are cheaps as chips. yes it will cost more than a standard Blu Ray Disk, but I still recon it would be more cost effective to put a game (if it was big enough) on one of these new disks than multi 50GB disks. I wouldn't be surprised if the packaging costs more to produce than the actual Blu Ray Disk, this would definitely be the case with DVD's (my educated guess)

3.6 - Correct but...
Ridge Racer on PS1 used something like less than 10% of the capacity of a CD, but by the end of the PS1 life cycle games like MGS and Final Fantasy were on multi disks.
I'm not here to say more GB's means better games! because that is not true, but it gives extra potential. Whether the developers step up to use that potential is what we'll have to wait and see.
I'm also like the potential of it as a film medium, entire trilogies on one disk in full HD. same with entire tv series. Not that this will dramatically change the experience from having multiple disks. But it is more convenient.
Also a 400GB rewritable Disk would of been useful for my final project at uni, as I had over 250GB of raw video footage to back up!
I can't predict the future and see if the PS3 will use this or not, but it's a facility which is there, maybe some games will utilise it, maybe they won't.

Except that you can fill that space will hiqh quality video extras, higher quality sound, and many other things. All the space does not need to be used by the game. Not to mention bundling several games onto one disc, it would be cool to have a trilogy of games on one disc.
