GTA IV Available for Pre-Purchase On Steam, Comes with Vice City for Free

Valve has announced that their online software distribution platform, Steam, is now offering gamers the ability to pre-purchase Grand Theft Auto IV for the PC. When pre-purchased, gamers will also receive a free copy of GTA: Vice City.

Pricing is a bit whack, it's $39.99 which at current conversion rates makes the game close to £30 when VAT is added on. I can get a boxed copy of GTA 4 from a shop for £24.99. I think steam needs to start getting a bit more competitive if it wants to grow.

Unfortunately, Valve does not decide the price. The publisher of the game does. It seems that digital games by big-name publishers tend to not convert well from its USD price to foreign dollars compared to retail stores. And unfortunately, I don't think that will change at least for another year or two until digital distribution becomes more popular.

The steam service caters for a certain type of consumer, clearly you are not that type. I personally prefer to buy all my games from steam the mere fact I do not need a dvd in the drive to play single player AND multi player makes the service invaluable.

I am not saying steam is a perfect service, I think the pricing at times sucks (mostly not their fault) and they can be tardy on meeting the release dates for everywhere outside the US. However those issues aside I really do not miss the plastic disc that people keep raving about.

It's the middle of winter here, if you see the sun feel free to point it out to me because I haven't seen it for days. Besides if I have a choice of downloading legally or having to wade through a group of acne infested brats begging their mommy to buy them Generic Beat em up/slash em up/platform em up 2000 then I will take the digital download route every time.
