EA Being Sued For $10m Over SecuROM

Negative Gamer writes:

"Is the inclusion of SecuROM with games such as Spore actually illegal? It looks like we may soon find out as two more individuals have joined Melissa Thomas and filed class-action lawsuits against EA."

I feel sorry for EA... they added securom to protect from pirates but the pirates cracked it in less then a day. So all they have left is a program that hassles people who actually pays for it, meanwhile pirates can enjoy the game hassle free and without the need to put in the DVD to play as well... talk about promoting piracy... sigh

2.2 - EA was stupid
The Pirates are going to crack if they want. The problem is that companies like EA are making pirates known, putting the idea in peoples heads to look into it.

4 - SecuROM is epic fail
Its useless for preventing piracy. These days most people who pirate do not burn games, they get them from the Internet and it doesn't matter what protection you have, the real pirates will crack it like an egg.

There is only one solution to Piracy. Make everything around a MMO format. They don't often get pirated if at all. When is the last time you heard that someone Pirated World of Warcraft?

4.2 - private server?
@ Fanboi
i agree

@ Deadlyfire
have you ever heard of a private server?
right there, that is pirating World of Warcraft, so yes, i have heard of people pirating it :P.
although I do understand your point, charging people to play games wouldn't work, there are always ways around things, and that would actually piss people off more than Securom 0_o;

Personally, I kind of doubt that the main purpose of SecuROM is to stop piracy in the first place. EA might be greedy, but they are not stupid. I doubt they actually believe SecuROM prevents piracy on any significant level.

My suspicion is that SecuROM's main purpose is basically acting as spyware, and while EA will probably never admit that, it does make perfect sense. Being able to discern private information on costumers, in order to "predict" what will sell in the future, is a dream scenario for any purely money-driven corporation such as EA.

One thing is to look at charts and see what sold well in the past, but knowing private info about people, such as hobbies and whatnot, is an entirely different level.

Anyone who thinks that large corporations wouldn't do anything illegal in fear of being sued, needs to think again. The money earned will generally far outweigh any money potentially lost in court.

My guess is that it is used more to prevent the sale of second hand games. Who would want to buy a second hand game that may or may not have any installs left with the code and then have to call EA to try and get more, even though you didn't buy it in the first place? Not many people. Especially the way EA has complained bitterly about second hand game sales hurting their bottom line, I wouldn't doubt if this is a big reason behind it!

7 - i dont want to sound like the anti-whatever you want to call me but....
if i were in they're shoe's i think i would put the software in my games as well,5 install maximum, and i will also explain to the people who feel the need to complain that p.c software costs 20 dollars less than console games....lol

im just saying that if i were a company thats bleeding money to thieves i would try almost anything to make it stop.
i see you guys's point tho about spyware but what if they really only use it to authenticate the games?
just a thought

peace and keep gaming

You would secretly put damaging DRM software on a free demo?

"5 install maximum' if you stated that, I think you will be leading the pc games market to decline even further, btw how the heck people will buy the game if they only get to install only 5 time, I thought when you brought the game I thought it your, so how come you have the limitation of installing the games. hmmm

7.3 - When I buy a game
I expect to have 100% owner ship of it. So when they put this protection install sh!t in their games thats just another incentive to make me pirate it. They also have to realize the percentage isn't as high as they think. Like i thought everyone used limewire but you still see i tunes making millions.

Securom is crap and a waste of time, its spyware and I really don't want rubbish DRM which hurts legit customers and limits me on how many computers I can install it on. I don't feel sorry for any company which uses Securom as DRM and I don't see why more developers use Steam or DRM similar to Company of Heroes or World In Conflict.
