PS3 Fanboy: Why Sony sells music videos on Xbox 360, not PS3

Many of you should know that Sony makes far more than electronics. They're one of the largest distributors of media in the world, with their hand in Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony BMG. While the company has been trying to use its incredible library of assets across multiple divisions, the decisions of a few stubborn-headed executives have prevented such corporate synergy.

1 - Sony needs to fire some of its execs, and promote unity within the company
If they did that, they'd be the strongest unified corporation out there.

I agree, the PS3 isn't really just a console anymore, it's a complete media centre. The PSX (PS2 Media Hub in Japan) was sold through Sony, rather than Sony Computer Entertainment and it was a similar set up to the PS3 (XMB, HDD for movies, music, photos, PC Connectivity). Sony, as a company, should be pushing the PS3 as a device that is a living room centre piece.

1.3 - Please explain, Eiffel
It seems that for the most part, the heads of the different divisions are the ones that control how things are run. If I am not understanding it, can you enlighten me?

@ PirateThom:

I almost forgot about the PSX. It's too bad that it flopped because it was really an innovative device at the time...

... this part of Sony isn't the gaming department. It's like saying Sony computers shouldn't have Windows. Give me a break, it's only business.

1.5 - Here's why kiddies
Licensing.

maybe MS got some contracts a long time ago that are still in effect today. Remember at the launch of the ps3, sony expected to simply steamroll with the ps3. so in that sense, maybe they didn't prepare everything in advance as they have these past cpl of years.

plus, SONY music isn't exactly sony game division. not the same people in charge. not the same people with the same deal in mind. Sony Music doesn't care what Sony gaming division does unless it affects them negatively. Sony Music only cares about making profit for their end. and in the business world, when you make a contract you stick to it or you get your ass sued.

for the inevitable disagrees i'm going to get or to the uninformed think about this. in a school you have music departments and sports departments. sports teachers don't care about the band, music teachers don't care about the football team. except when one of the two causes the other's budget to diminish.

Actually this is what frustrated Phil Harrison the most when he worked for SCE.

He hated that SCE wasn't unified for the longest time, and tried pushing alot of the Station.com games to the PS3. Look at Singstar, and how it releases content.

Sony BMG had rights to the following artists:
Michael Jackson
Backstreet Boys
'N Sync
Nelly Furtado
Britney Spears
Beatles
Tenacious D
Justin Timberlake
Allen Jackson (country)
AC/DC
Aerosmith
The Monkeys
Brad Paisley
Carrie Underwood
Kelly Clarkson
ETC.

Also FYI almost every American Idol Singer is contracted with Sony, wow.

If Sony could get its acts together Everyone Sony game would have a awesome soundtrack, and Singstar wouldn't suck. The DLC for that game is horrendus which makes no sense. Everything on singstar is catered for indy bands and is targeted for women and flamboyant men.

a pure facepalm moment here. Singstar would have been untouchable if they had the support of their OWN company.

Good news is that NOW it will happen since they are no more Sony BMG but only Sony Music.

That's the weird thing. Singstar does have Sony BMG support.

However, now that Sony BMG is wholly owned by Sony Music Entertainment, it should come a lot faster.

Bertelsmann, the "BMG" part of the Sony BMG partnership, insisted that music videos are available on Xbox 360 instead of PS3 "to make sure it's a fair deal"

Wow, that's retarded, how do such people get into positions of power?

That's exactly what caught my attention when I first read it. I'm sure there is more to the story, but it still doesn't explain why the videos were/are only on 360. Just because BMG decided the 360 should have them doesn't mean they shouldn't have seen the light of day on PS3. I mean we are not talking about movies here, a 4 minute video could've easily been d/l'able from the PSN long before Sony introduced the movie store.

I've always wondered why we didn't see more Sony "products" on the PS3. At least they seem to have gotten figured out, but this does explain (partially) why that stuff has been missing. Admittedly, another minor misstep by Sony that shouldn't have happened in the first place.

4.4 - The BMG side has always been full of douchebags before, though.
The scandals that took place during the time it was Sony-BMG was mostly to pander to BMG (the DRM issue is what sticks out the most in my mind). Judging from what this article suggested, I can't see any reason to NOT think that:

1. BMG were to benefit from all of the things that made it controversial to begin with, and
2. They were full of douchebags that didn't want anything else other than money.

So I'm not too surprised seeing this kind of news or that someone within that group would think that would be a good deal. That was just how Bertelsmann's group was.

Glad Sony got all of it now, though. Hopefully they can set some things right with it.

5 - hmm
well Sony should really look into unity on its console, want to make money? fine make money outside the console round.

we have a video store yet no Bourne identity because Sony doesn't have universal? which is also somewhat partially owned by ms? Sony can do the same here.

honest opinion, i think Sony should really try and sell not only music videos on the ps3, but also music tunes like apple does with itunes. and make these features psp compatible, this would make the ps3 a better entertainment system in many eyes.

force ms, also i think Sony should hold movies distributed by either mgm which they own more than half of and Columbia, tri-star all Sony owned companies as well as Sony television network shows exclusively to Sony made products in the gaming realm, this will force ms to pay them major royalties for a bite of this pie, and god knows ms will eventually bend over just so they can say the 360 does so too.

if ms wants to play it, like they always have with the o il have some of what you got, but don't feel like paying you the premium you should pay us for windows. than Sony should force them into a corner, and they could since they are after all the 2nd largest music label out there in the world, even Steve jobs doesn't have much choice either.

Sony needs to play a bit rough with its competition if it wants to make money.

Sony doesn't need windows seriously, Sony could just dump ms for all they care and simply go and sign a deal with apple and start crafting blu-ray enable macs at discounted prices for apple is that simple really.

again i say, and asked in the playstation forums if stringer should step down.

since he's been running things (and mind you i think he is a very intelligent and able executive on any company) SCEE (Europe) has been running the show.

Singstar screw ups (still mainly supporting the ps2 and not the ps3, lack of songs, lack of ps2 to ps3 port etc) all come from SCEE

while we are all excited for killzone 2... its big big budget and delays come from SCEE

the LBP delay and lack of launch promotion also comes from SCEE.

SCEA (america) gets the crappy promotion and support and budget. (look at SOCOM), it should have received Killzones budget and socom IS a playstation success.

SCEJ (Japan) cant count on SCEA since its pretty much the red headed step child, and SCEE is only looking out for itself, SCEJ does their own thing and at times doesnt bother to port to the US or UK.

Stringer should be in charge of a Region not a global companies direction.

i know his job is not easy and the companies unity was an issue before he took over, but personally he is not doing that great of a job. i think he has his sisters dropout son or wifes out of jail cousin running SCEE while he handles the rest of it.

my girlfriend loves singstar so i'm glad the localization of singstar has been taken from SCEE and given to sony's new india developers. i hope SCEE looses more control of up coming games.

FYI SCEE is also the ones that dropped 8 days and getaway 3 for eyepet (which also hasnt been announced for outside of the UK hmmmm)

if Sony not only have a video store in the PStore. But also a music store. And since the PStore can be accessed through the PSP. Why not allow access to the Video/Music store for those PSP users and let them DL it to their PSP's?

And while we're in the subject. Why doesn't Sony allow the Sony Internet Video Link users access to the Video store? Sure, they may have to include a HDD to it's Video Link modules. But this way, Sony can get customers from not only it's PS3 users who want to DL movies. But also PSP users who don't own a PS3. And those who don't even own a gaming device.

Just my humble opinion, that's all.

As far as Music videos goes, I don't even care for them anymore.

When I was younger I remember watching MTV for hours at a time just watching the Music Videos (back when MTV actually used to air lots of music videos instead of reality shows), but now I don't even watch music videos anymore. All I care about now is being able to download the songs I want from Itunes.

However, I think that it's rather dumb for the PS3 not to have Music Videos from Sony BMG whenever the 360 does.

MTV is now catered for teenage girls and flamboyant and overly Emo. Worse of all they keep giving the wrong people air time like Soldja boy and other really crappy rappers. Also Little Wayne's videos are constantly on, along with reality shows like "I have Gay Parents", "Date my Mom", bisexual dating show with Tila Tequila which is probally the worst thing I have ever seen on TV.

Tila is a Hoe, and is probably the reason teens are spreading STD's at a alarming rate through out America. Great Role Model.

its really amazing how little you know about business. Sony should drop windows? Wow, all I can say to that is Wow.

ok? look IBM one of the largest corporations in the world had drop windows before so why cant Sony? IBM is still one of the largest companies in the world.

Sony doesn't have to make laptops my friend why for? i mean you just got to much competition as if that market is flooded already. Sony wont necessarily lose anything by dropping their laptop division, heck they could used that money and make parts for that industry. which is exactly what IBM has done over the last couple of years and including have something in each companies consoles. making royalties of all these companies, and you don't even need a business major to know that much.

yes i said it in simple terms, and although is not as simple as that, it is also possible. so yeah wow. just wow.

look the same way the sold their cell shares and tech to Toshiba, they can do the same with their vaio lineup, besides its not exactly as if their making a killing on them vaois, especially now.

off topic i think Sony should craft their own little netflix and Amazon esquee bluray store within the video store, you know the ability to buy bluray's at a discounted price on this exclusive store and have em sent to your home by mail would do wonders, this addition would work like amazon and would give you the ability to compare prices for the lowest price available on blu ray movies.

Sony has the engineers licenses and money all it takes are a few minor paper work and the actual layout and integration of the whole thing.

IBM doesn't use windows anymore? Well that is news to me, thanks for clearing that up. So Sony just makes laptops now also? Didn't know that, thought they still made PC's, thanks again. I also like how you compare a computer based company (IBM) to a company that is far more diverse (Sony). But I guess in your mind it makes sense. I enjoy these great conversations that happen here on N4G, they always make me want to come back and keep posting.

11 - Because corporations make mistakes
Or they'd be sued for monopolistic practices if they only supported their own systems with their own music in their own formats.

Had Sony not made these kinds of mistakes the PS3 would be in an even better position. Imagine if PS3 was the only place where you could get all movies, music and music videos from all companies and on 360 everything except Sony's? That would suck for Microsoft and its fanboys but for videophiles the Ps3 would be the only choice.

11.1 - agreed
but ok than lets look at the alternative than, in a few years apple and ms wont be the only two companies with operating systems.

word is Google is already heavily investing the majority of their investments on a operating system to undercut ms's windows in price, lol man oh man, i tell you when this happens many would than wonder what's next. another competitor in the operating system world only means saturation and perhaps more confusion than solutions yeah ms has its grasp on the market but slowly apple is gaining more and more steam and revenue.

and Google owns like what? 80% of the internet? what else is there office? im pretty sure they'll come up with something thats for sure, i mean look at chrome just a lil after a week on the market and already over 4% market share? G1? already on the top 20 hottest gadgets? lol.

lol seriously times are changing.

I think its ok.... you don't want to be sued for monopolistic practices.

If there is money made why not...

Its not like other companies don't do it.... look at apple... if they did not make it compatable for pc windows we will see how fast they will lose the mp3 portable device market.

Or early digital cameras where sony had alot of components in other brand cameras

Or car companies working TOGETHER to build components.

Yes companies are in competition but they also work together to drive the industry.

i dont know much about companies n business but inst companies divided, like sony into different smaller companies that have nothin to do with each other? like wit sony they have their record company for music then they have their computer company that handles stuff like ps3 but they have no real link with each other jus that they have the same brand name... then you'd have sony records usa, sony records uk, sony records australia n so on which have no influence on sony computer entertainment usa or sony computer entertainment uk..

i dont know but thats jus how i thought it worked n i wouldnt b surprised.. all the sub companies need to make money for the over all sony brand

That's actually how it works. One isn't directly working for the other, even tho, it has the Sony brand name on it. That's also how Microsoft is able to supply Sony with Windows because Microsoft, the company, isn't directly working for Microsoft Game Studios; They are four different departments.
