SONY: 160GB PS3 to launch on 31st October

Sony has announced during its press conference that a 160GB PS3 bundle will launcht October 31st. It will be the same spec as the 80GB but with the extra hard drive space, and priced at EUR 449.

Technically speaking every company makes hug loses the very first year they were out. As long as you make it through the first year you're usually in the game for a long time. It's like opening out a convenient store you always put more money into the business than money coming out for the first year. Just ask anyone who has opened their business and made it through the first year; they’ll say the first year is the hardest.

That’s what I don’t get with people when it comes to business because you lost a lot of money the first year starting the business it doesn’t mean you’re out of the game bringing in new stuff. Plus this would cost Microsoft more than Sony because Microsoft makes their own hard drives (HD) that I think is a stupid move. More so for the consumers than the company because now consumers have to buy a specific HD instead of any laptop 2.5 HD.

see your point but dont you think sony for a company who have made huge losses have not had enough skus already? heck the 80gig aint even here in the UK yet so its not as if sony have been riding a wave of a one sku ps3 since its release.

too many sku's the consumers are confused and by that i mean the parents who want to buy this product for their children

20gig,60,gig,40gig,80gig,80gi g with no bc,and now 160gig

Everyone know that consoles lose money on the hardware and make up for it with software.

And for Sony, the true prize is that Bluray money. Everyone forgets that, but not Sony. They were playing for keeps, when everyone else was playing games.

Wii gets props too btw. Release a system that actually gains you money from hardware sales?

But Blu-ray profit (with all of Blu-ray's various applications) is damn near infinitely greater than video game profit

If people cared so much about BC, they would've bought the 60GBs and 80GBs (old) while they were still out. Can't whine now. I wanted BC just in case so I bought a 60GB launch. Also, people kept complaining about the price, so Sony had to cut costs to bring the console price down. But of course, the main reason for cutting BC is to promote the PS2s.

Its a limited edition SKU. Twice the space of the 80 gig as well as with 70 Euros worth of downloadable content for free. This is all for only 50 Euros more than the new 80 gig thats officially launching this friday.

Basically, its a limited edition thats actually a steal for what you get.

It's just Sony trying to push more PSN stuff on you. They're actually forcing you to buy PSN stuff before you even agreed to. But all the consumers think is that the extra $50 goes towards that extra 80GB, when it probably cost next to nothing to slap on. Sony is trying to push PSN stuff onto the consumer to get them interested in spending money on the PS Store.

No it's not the same as the 360 Elite, Microsoft doesn't give you a choice, if you need more drive space on a 360 you have to get a 120 gig drive or a 360 Elite with the drive. With the Sony PS3 you can upgrade your PS3 any time with any 2.5" hard drive no matter what SKU you you buy. As drives get cheaper it makes since to put out new SKU's with larger drives because a 160 gig drive now is just as cheap as a 60 gig was in 07. So as parts get cheaper the consumer wins with Sony. I have 250 gig drive now thats an Elite for you.

sony has at all times 2 sku's.. only difference is price and BCackward compatibility.

360 has 3 sku's.. an elite, a pro and an arcade that has no hard drive there for no backward compatibility and no real benefit to xbla or market

Replace "B/C" with the word "Wii", and that sentence will still hold true. Okay okay, that was a d!ck comment hehe (but hopefully some people got a kick out of it) And to be fair, I do use my Wii more (ten times since 2006) than I use the B/C on my PS3 (three times since 2006).

But it's all about perception. What you said *IS* true, and that's exactly what I've been telling my friends who were whining. But even I can't help but believe that my PS3 is worth more than those without B/C at all. And I bought the MGS4 bundle as my second PS3 just because I wanted to get a B/C PS3 before they are sold out forever.

Now, what Sony SHOULD do is announce a software-based B/C client in an upcoming firmware update. THAT would solve this consumer dilemma.

EDIT: Also, my problem with the multi-SKU approach is that this is a thinly guised way to keep the console's price where Sony wants to keep it. So, instead of dropping the price to $349 or even $299, (with a 20GB drive, maybe) they keep the price at $399 and continue to add more harddrive space every 3-6 months to "argue" that it's providing more value for the same price.

Well, guess what Sony, the problem is not the VALUE of your product. The PS3 was already WORTH IT when it was first released at $600, and "smart" consumers have always known that. The problem is that, those who haven't yet bought a PS3 are unwilling to pay over $300 for a videogame system REGARDLESS of its value!

Your failure is the lack of understanding of the market.
