Lite-On IT expected to ship 5 million Xbox 360 DVD-ROM drives in 3Q08

via SPOnG:

"Who needs HD-DVD or Blu-ray? Not Microsoft. The news is that Lite-On is apparently aiming to ship five million DVD drives for the Xbox 360 in the third quarter of this very year.

Digitimes reports that "Microsoft has asked Lite-On to get ready to meet possible increased orders for Xbox 360 DVD-ROM drives..."

So, does this put one more nail in the coffin containing 'news' of a Blu-ray add-on for the 360?"

Edit: wrong reply, meant for Dakid.

They will only sell about 6 million this year and 5 million next year. Microsoft knows they won't sell that many.

Thats good for potential new xbox 360 buyers. Lite on produces the quietest and most reliable of all the 360s dvd drives.

True, it also make me wonder if Microsoft has something planned that they need that many in 3Q08 or if they are just stocking up for the future.

3.2 - you can
install your game discs to your HDD. Still need the physical disc in the drive to prove you own it. But the data will be all HDD

are they still forcing dvd on to consumers. most homes are thinking of buying new HDTVs and fresh Blu-ray players/movies.

Do you really think most homes are thinking about not only adding hdtv to their home but bluray?.........especially with the current status of the US economy? Do not know if it was your intent, but I can see your comment being turned into a console war by others.

Pretty much the only TVs you can buy now are HDTVs, consumer trends lead retailers on adoption rates, and apparently the majority of consumers have decided they no longer need tube TVs.

HDTVs are NOT a LONG way from becoming mainstream. With cable going digital in 2009 and Blu-ray adoption occurring faster than DVDs previously have. I'd say HDTVS are mainstream now, economic troubles or not.

Oh come on. Seriously? You expect Microsoft to put a Blu-Ray drive in the 360 almost halfway through its potential lifespan?

Do you need me to go into all the ways that's a bad idea for Microsoft?

How about just this one:

They need to keep the pricer lower than the PS3 to have any chance of holding off Sony in North America for 2 or 3 more years. Blu-Ray drives will NOT keep the price lower.

Oh yes, everyone buying an HDTV is going to go and spend $300+ on a blu-ray player too. Time to return from fantasy land to the real world.

While I agree that with cable becoming digital will lead to more people buying hdtv....it is by no means a method in which people have to buy hdtv. The reality is, only those who use an antenna will really be effected, and even then they can purchase the converter boxes and be reimbursed by the government for two boxes.

@5, and when dvd was barley making it on the scene, it was 90% VHS movies then DVD.

Things like this just don't change over night. If blu-ray is the standard for HD movies, what other option is there, DLC? Microsoft says it's console is the best media center. Well where is the HD content? Because of your statement you would have to also say 90% of house holds still don't have a boardband connection to the internet. Which would imply not everyone can get a HD movie off xbox live.

If microsoft really belived that their console is the greatest media hub, it should also include the blu-ray drive.

Can I see a dramatic difference between DVD and VHS without an HDTV? Yes.

Can I see a dramatic difference between DVD and Blu-Ray without an HDTV?
No, not really.

That is why Blu-Ray won't take off the same way DVDs did for awhile yet.

6 - There's already 20 million people with DVD-based 360s.
It's too late (and too expensive) to add in blu-ray.

No bluray for the 360. Too expensive and it's a kick in the nuts for people with current 360's with HD-DVD.

any right mined in the know gamer knows the 360 CAN NOT add a blueray drive! You think Halo fans want to rebuy the game just so it works! NO

the news about XBOX and blueray is if the next xbox will use it

11 - It really makes me wonder
What media storage MS and Nintendo will be using for their new consoles.

Pretty sure that Sony will stick with Blu-Ray.

It makes sense for Blu-Ray allround next gen - this gen DVD seems quite adequate mostly.

12 - Is this really happening?
Wow, lately its been getting to the point where I don't even want to scroll down to the comments section of an article, because of the conflict. Everyone here seems to have some common sense though. Props!

And yes, I agree with the statements about Blu-Ray not coming to the 360. One, it would cause microsoft to lose their edge on console-cost. Two, it is far too late: If this gen has a 5 year cycle like normal, thats late 2010 for the next xbox. I know that many articles have talked about it being more like 2011 or 2012. We will see.

But don't you think that blu-ray players will be a bit less expensive then?

If blu-ray was ever added to 360, it would be for movies and would have absolutely no effect on games unless MS want to piss off 20M people.

15 - why not?
As much as I would like to have seen a bluray drive for my 360. I ask the simple question of why can't the 360 just be good enough with DVD? The obvious answer most will say is because of storage space. In reality that is nothing more than a convenience when it comes to an epic game being on one big disc or a few smaller ones. Ultimately it doesn't change the fact that the 360 is capable of displaying what it does on screen. It isn't as if the added single disc capacity is going to give the unit the power to have 3 times more content on screen.

Think about it. If you had a 20 gallon tank of gas vs a 50 gallon tank just means you could go farther but the car still has the same limit on how fast it can get there. Ok, that may seem a bit off for some to understand. Point is the disc is just a storage medium. It isn't going to do anything but cut down on how many time you have to swap a disc when playing a game. Whether the content is on 1 disc or 4 it is still the same content.

No if I really wanted bluray then I will get a ps3. Other than storage I see both systems as equals. No harm no foul. Both are capable of displaying HD gaming content and HD video content and have their own online strategies.

You cant say the same about Nintendo!

16 - most gamers will prefer the HDD anyway
I think the real future of gaming is having the game on the drive. Then it won't matter if it came off of 1 bluray or 4 dvds. It's all going to load better off of the HDD anyway.

2009, son. Enough said. Get an HD-TV or get a converter. Didn't you know? People will buy HDTVs more in 2009 than any other year because of the mandate.

Edit: I am speaking about North America, specifically the U.S.

You seem to have a misconception about the upcoming change. The signal for television broadcasting is changing from analog to digital. The only people that this will affect are using antennas for their t.v. reception. If you do use an antenna, you will be able to get a converter box for very cheap compared to a HDTV. Also, digital does not mean High Definition.

With that being said, I have noticed a lot of people who have the same misconception, so that in itself will push alot of HDTVs. Unless when they go to the store, the salesmen explain the situation properly and... oh wait... what was I thinking.

Hey, I agree.

Edit: to be a bit more clear on my comment, I should have tried to point out that the mandate will probably confuse a lot of people into getting an HDTV, while most will opt for the converters due to the obvious. Still, I think we will see a nice rise in HDTV purchases next year as a result, among other reasons.
