Evolution or revolution? Suspense builds for Wii 2

Nintendo fans rejoice: there may well be a new arrival in the group's family of consoles sooner than you think. Satoru Iwata, president of the Japanese computer games group that has been lauded for its ability to attract new waves of gamers, has admitted that the company is hard at work on a follow-up to the motion-sensing Wii.

However, the speculation that has followed Mr Iwata's hint demonstrates the interest in Nintendo's next offering.

" The ones who came into gaming with the Wii are going to become more demanding and Nintendo will not be able to fob them off with the level of graphics and processing it is offering in the Wii today"

The problem with this statement is that Nintendo did not promote Wii as a eye-candy product. They totally focused on "motion" gaming.
Those people will only demand hollywood visuals if Nintendo is hinting it out to them... i mean come on people loved their wii games on a BIGGER screen and most of you [typical] core gamers actually throw up thinking about that.

Also this is not news whatsoever. Said it before....this is nothing new or special it's happing in the MS and Sony department too(talking about new console projects).

That sort of came off as a fanboy comment (or just hatred for the console), but there is actually a lot of truth to that. What other console has so many different controllers? First they give you the Wii-mote with the Wii, at which point you realize you need the nunchuck. Then they come out with the WiiFit balance board which more and more games will be using. Now they even add the Wii-motion plus so the Wii-mote will work like it was supposed to originally. You also need the Classic controller, and will most likely want some gamecube controllers as well. Plus, since the Wii is a good multiplayer console you're gonna want 3 more of each. There is more peripherals attached to this machine then any other console ever.

And what if you want Guitar Hero and Rockband? Good God, you'll need an entire room.

I don't hate the Wii, but I'll never own one because of all the extra crap you have to buy. I also prefer a standard controller, but Nintendo's sales show that isn't a common opinion.

3.2 - They don't even produce high end hardware.
These technologies require more CPU power and software then Nintendo normally gos for.

Look at the Wii it's not exactly cutting edge technology. Why would they make something revolutionary and technologically advanced when they didn't add hd-dvd, blu-ray, a next gen cpu, hdd, or even an hdmi output on the Wii?

You dont have to buy anything dude, the only games they are required for are the ones they come with. Anything else offers alternate control schemes. BTW the Wii comes with a Wii remote and nunchuk, so you do not have to go buy another Nunuck just to play.

"I regret buying the Wii now"

Count me in...

Well, sort of.

In retrospect, I definitely wouldn't have bought one. But now that I own one (since launch), I can't get myself to sell the damn thing, even though my archaic VCR gets more use.

Probably just the pack-rat in me. I keep telling myself that, one day, I WILL play that copy of Zelda TP that's been collecting dust alongside the little white box.

Hopefully.

4.3 - play Zelda
Twilight Princess has its moments. Hell I'm trying to get myself to play Resident Evil 4 Wii ever since I got it. I have a bunch of Wii games I didn't play yet.....but I always seem to be going back to my PS3 because well.....it looks better and plays better. (IMO)

I want to at least play all of my Wii games before I think of selling it. Honestly the only reason I'm still holding onto my Wii because my younger siblings like it. I don't think even Wii Motion Plus will make up for the abundant shovelware on the Wii and lack of hardcore games for a gamer like myself.

I'm with you guys, but I sold mine already. Bought a PS3.

Beat Zelda TP with almost all heart pieces and not quite all the Pos.
Was a good game, but the same game it's been since Ocarina.

Beat Galaxy too. Galaxy was brilliant. That is the only game that came out on Wii that would still have got a AAA score if it had come out on the PS3 or 360. All the other Wii games score well ... for a Wii.

Metroid - great controls. But seriously ... controls are a game's interface. Sure you want your responses to seamlessly interact with the game in front of you, but that doesn't help if the game looks and plays just like it did at the start of last generation. Metroid is a pretty pathetic effort for a shooter this generation. Although it is good compared to the other games you get on a Wii.

Sell your Wii now. The conduit is coming out soon, but considering the F-P-Shooters that the 360 and PS3 have coming out. Is it worth waiting for the poor man's shooter?
Watch the Resistance 2 trailer with all those baddies running at you at once, the huge monsters and space ships filling the sky. Now look at The Conduit with one or two baddies on screen at once, running around in front of crude blocky buildings.
I'm sure the game will be good for a Wii, but for this generation?

I know what all you Wii fans will say: it's all about how you control a game.
No. It isn't. It's all about the game. The game is the most important part. How you interface is supposed to be seamless, and is only a factor when it doesn't work properly.

Controls are a part of the game, if you have a bad control scheme you wont be playing now would you?

so saying " and is only a factor when it doesn't work properly." is utterly BS.
And you know it.
A control scheme is setup trough trial and error making the game as accessible and easy for the gamers. They are a part of the design of the game.

I was never a big fan of FPS games, i only liked Halo2 online( but still love Doom).
After playing Metroid prime 3 i can honestly say that i'm excited about future FPS games on the Wii.

The control's do play a big roll, i honestly do not want to play the PS3 or 360 FPS games simply because of the controllers.

In my opinion dual analog wont do it anymore and to me they have a bad control scheme "now" ....so in your opinion i should not play those upcoming PS3/360 games.

5 - I for one
do not want a brain controlled system. no thank you, I'll stick with a pad. I do however want better game play, visuals, and stories next gen. but nintendo seems to only think about the gameplay. I believe if you keep the three main things (game play, visuals, and stories) all evolving at a decent rate games will get better and better you don't need to revolutionize the control mechanics, if it ain't broke don't fix it, and game pads have worked since the dawn of consoles so why bother changing the formula (excluding the original Xbox controller :P) this is however my opinion

the fourth main thing is online, but I didn't include it because by game I mean the campaign mode, however, the online needs to evolve just as well as the rest of the game.

and all companies are in R&D for there next console, why does this count as news? not to mention I've read that first paragraph about 4 times today on N4G in various stories.

6.1 - I disagree
There's only so far you can take last-gen hardware w/ motion controls. If it was next-gen hardware w/ motion controls; I'd agree with you. However even though the Wii is very fun and wacky to play, I often find myself going back to my PS3 alot because I've become attached to that level of graphics. Could you imagine the possibilities of Nintendo's technology with Sony's hardware? That's what the Wii should've been in the first place but didn't. If the "Wii 2" is suppose to cure that, I'll sell my Wii right now because the president of Nintendo isn't making me feel very assured of my long-time investment. I want a console to last at least 5-6 years.

@fantasystar, Why do you own a PS3? Is it your first console? I bet you owned a PS2. The weakest last gen console with tons of shovelware, and kids games. Those inferior visuals didnt bother you last gen. How come it should mean so much to others now? We all know PS2 set the standard for every game to come out. Most games were made for PS2 then ported over never using the extra power of the other consoles. Now since most games never used that power it stands to reason that most people buying a Wii will see a graphical upgrade. Sure not as much as a PS3 but then again it also has the least amount of games coming out.I'll take 50 great games with decent graphics over 5 decent games with great graphics anyday.

11 - i regret buying the wii but still hoping something comes out that looks fun
When i bought the wii i was hoping for something that was fun and entertaining..... The motion plus thing should have been part of the controller from the start or at least earlier instead of 2 years after the fact, if it was made earlier games could be better but problem is there are basically no good 3rd party games medal of honor heroes 2 is great but online isnt that best, and other than that nothing brawl horrible online and mario kart gets old after awhile..... so this whole thing about mind playing is just kind of bull, it will sell until ppl realize it really is pointless and nintendo needs to work more on the space the system can hold and graphics in a way and game play

I got my Wii because I'm a gamer & there were games i wanted to play & complete on it. Zelda, Metroid, Galaxy, Kart, Zack & wiki, paper Mario & no more heroes. Not Smash Bros though never really liked it. Then for me the quality games dried up and the dust was starting to settle on my Wii.So i decided it was time to return to Sony, so i traded it all in for my PS3. No regrets. Would i buy a Wii 2, i don't think i would.

While playing Soul Calibur 4 i had a thought. What do all those people think who owned a Game Cube last generation and were able to have Soul Calibur on there machine just like the PS2 & Xbox. This generation they have stuck with Nintendo and have there Wii but no Soul Calibur 4. Is this the first real example for Wii gamers (not the casual crowd) of how the PS3 & XB360 will leave the Wii for dead.I guess they could play Soul Calibur Legends!

It's not just Soul Caliber.
The best shooter so far this generation CoD4 would have been on Wii too if it had similar specs to the 360 and PS3.
Rockstar decided to go multiplatform with GTA4. Wii would have got that game too if it were possible.
Wii has lost Resident Evil 5 (They got the sh1tty RE:UC and a port of RE 4)
No Oblivion. No Fallout. No Final Fantasy XIII. No Burnout. No GRID. No Assassin's Creed. No Bioshock. No Devil May Cry. No Condemned Bloodshot.

I could just keep going. Nintendo have pretty much shunned the 3rd parties, by making their console so far behind the others that it is impossible to have similar ports.

You guys trip me out nintendo did not shun any one. I mean I understand third parties kids buying expensive system why wouldn't they buy a game that cost a 100 million and still have glitches in it? What is even more funny is most of those games came out on PC yep better control and graphics.

I understand if you don't like certain game I guess it did dry up for you. I still got games to beat though and I play a lot of stuff on the VC and I'm loving it. My gaming library has more in it on the Wii than your also.

RE:SC is fine for what it is an arcade shooter. Fatal frame is about to come out along with tenchi(sp) 4 and other games. But you guys seem just out of the loop. Your game list look like internet ads. There are way better games coming to the HD stuff than what you listed. They too will be coming to PC.

Good game

That's true. I don't even have half of them.

I'm a survival horror fan. So I tend towards those kind of games.
I played RE4 twice all the way through on Gamecube so I'm not going to bother with that again for the Wii. RE:UC - my brother has it. Utter utter sh1t.
I want Condemned 2, Siren, RE5, Silent Hill, Dead Space, but I won't get all of them. I'll probably just get the best few.
Having choice is good though.

Atmosphere is also important in Survival horrors ... See decent visuals and 5.1 sound set-up.

I don't have time get through loads of games so all consoles have enough good games to keep me entertained.
But as I have a decent TV and sound set-up I may as well get the games for a console that outputs pretty visuals and atmospheric sound.

It's funny talk like this shows the industry thinks the Wii has won. If so many people that are hardcore did not like the Wii then why would so many articles talk about the next hardware because they all know you like the Wii but must get a graphic whore fix.

Also to call the conduit the poor mans shooter is funny. Where is the console version of crysis? UT3 looked like crap on the consoles and quake war barely had part of that game ported. The HD console are for kids. The controls suck also. Halo was the poor mans FPS and it crushed every one. I remember golden eye being the same thing. So I guess that's a compliment. I'll see you online after you get tired of looking at building details and throwing your controller at the TV because analog aiming sucks.

On topic the next nintendo system can be HD and leap frog the current tech and be on par with the newest stuff. This would take the HD market and offer the hardcore players a system to play all the ports along with the other games from the current system. I mean it would not be very hard to do MS is doing it to SONY right now. MS doesn't even have a list of really good 1st party games. SONY just has promises that will sell to owners of the system but nintendo and HD would just be crazy.

There next system would be the only system to have the Wow factor while the other would be seen as an improvement thus making them stale. I mean really I have the new GPU from ATI and I see games using direct x 9 level graphics for a while. It's like asking your self back in the 2d days how many sprites on screen is enough?

Any more than what you have now and game production becomes unsustainable. There are simply not enough console fanboys out there.
