Rare: XBLA GoldenEye 'locked in no man's land'

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at last week's Develop conference in Brighton, Rare senior software engineer Nick Burton has expressed his own disappointment regarding GoldenEye for Xbox LIVE Arcade.

"That was a tricky one. To be fair, I kind of wished that the differences got sorted out, but obviously there's the licensing issue for Bond, even if it's something that's already come out," said Burton. "It's incredibly hard to solve because there's so many licence holders involved. You've got the guys that own the license to the gaming rights now, the guys that have the licence to Bond as an IP, and there are umpteen licensees."

Burton continued: "... but for me I just kind of thought that we'd never manage it, never quite make it. But the feeling's not too bad really. It's what it's like as a games developer. You have to treat something that's not seen the light of day as a prototype. I've had, what, four or five things that never happened. It's funny that we don't even talk about them a lot of the time, because you think, well, we might revisit it."

So what of the future regarding a possible release? Burton says it's not in Rare's hands.

"The ball's not in anybody at Rare's court really. It's squarely in the license holders' courts. It's a shame. It's kind of locked in this no man's land. There's nothing on LIVE Arcade, there's nothing on Wii," he explained.

Bring it to the PSN :)

At least Sony owns the rights to the franchise (although not game publishing rights)

Actually MGM owns the Bond film rights, whilst Activision owns the Bond game licence. Nintendo owns the rights to the game Goldeneye, whilst Microsoft owns the rights to all of Rare's other titles. So the only one not involved is in fact Sony! ;)

It's a complicated licensing mess, but all the rumours point to Nintendo stonewalling despite MS offering the revamped Goldeneye for the Wii's Virtual Console in addition to XBLA. http://kotaku.com/344084/xb... :)

"Well Sony owns part of MGM."

Yes true, but only 20% which means it has no direct control over MGM's licensing and film rights business. In the case of the Bond films Sony acts as distributor, but has no ownership of the licence... therefore it has no seat at the bargaining table when it comes to Goldeneye. :)

Nintendo is being such A-holes not letting this game come out. I mean its done, why not just let it release on Wiiware and Xbox live then everybody is happy(except me,PS3 only :( ).

4 - Who cares any way
All the hype around this game and Perfect Dark was caused by Nintendo fanboys who never played a proper PC FPS at the time, good games? yes, but nothing close to the "best" FPS ever, I can name at least 5 PC fps which came out between 1997 and 2000 and are way better than those two.

If Nintendo wanted to apologize for their crappy E3 they would let this game get released on both XBLA & Wii Ware

Fair dos.. But are you sure there is no way around this to get Goldeneye released...?

This game has been really solid in my life, I've played it since my childhood and still do. If there is any way, Please, Please get this released as a enhanced live arcade game.. It would be so awesome.

If the rumours are true, that it's Nintendo that's stonewalling, then expect Banjo (and Perfect Dark) on XBLA to start breaking down that wall. Money talks... ;)
