Microsoft Spending $300+ Million To Tell Consumers Vista Doesn't Suck

Hey Apple. Microsoft's seen those Get a Mac ads with J. Long and J. Hodgman. They're tired of that shit. So tired, in fact, that they're going to spend some $300 million in their own advertising campaign with Crispin porter + Bogusky telling consumers how much Vista doesn't suck. Corporate VP of Windows Consumer Product said this:

I think this (althoguh N4G is VERY biased) an accurate example of why Microsoft is rather disapointing.

Yes, N4G is very biased. At least it sure as hell seems that way.

But I have been using vista ultimate 64 bit for over a month now and I love it. Not sure why every one complains.

You don't expect a video game that come out recently to run as fast on a PC that came out in 2001 would you? An operating system with the same upgrades to looks and features is the same way.

And if you want to compare Vista to XP then you better do it on an even playing field. Dont run a machine on XP that has 2 gigs of RAM and say XP is better. Because the minimum requirements when XP launched was 128megs of RAM. Run both OSes on the same bare minimum machine and Vista beats the hell out of XP.

i think its so much bullsh1t that everytime something controverisal comes along N4G is biased... u kiddin me right now right?, lets go back to the launch of the ps3 and 12 months in the running... im not gona say how many ps3 is a failure articles were out there, how bout all those ariticles about devs jumping ship, blu ray was a mistake, 3 bill on losses, no games, ... but now that microsoft is going thru some sh1t n4g is biased yeah... thats cool.. NEWS FLASH its not N4G making microsofts console RROD, is not N4G fault that SONY IS making their psn compareable to Xboxlive on each update and its CERTAINLY not N4G's Fault that microsoft droped the ball on VISTA according to most consumers. NEWS is NEWS GET OVER IT k thanks bye

1.3 - i agree Json
it's like comparing hl2 vs hl.

My pc can run half life a lot better than it can run half life 2... Does that mean half life 2 sucks? No, it means that hl2 has been improved and as a result it requires a new, more advanced technology.

Thats the same concept with windows xp vs vista.

However the real question becomes, is the preformance cost significant enough to warrent the advantages of vista?

Edit for Charmers:
that's debatable, windows offers some improvements, like DX10 and it does a lot more with multi-threaded aplications. Its got a couple very useful apps related to work, it has some decent multi-media contro and it's got some nice little functions here and there.

The largest drawback is that it's a resource hog, but that should no longer be a problem since you can get like 4 sticks ddr2 for like 150 bucks.

the thing is Half life 2 brought more to the table, better graphics, enhanced gameplay that kind of thing. Vista on the other hand brings absolutely NOTHING to the table that XP doesn't do just as well. This is the thing, when I buy a new PC part I want it to be faster, cheaper and smaller. The only thing that never does that is the OS that just keeps getting slower, more expensive and larger.

The key problem with Vista isn't that it's bad, it just doesn't do anything that XP doesn't do just as well so why bother with it. I have a quadcore 2.4ghz, 3gbs of RAM with 8800gts and 99% of the time I run XP, I only keep vista on as a dual boot system to try out Dx10 games (which often dissappoint).

1.5 - @Jason and all other above who wonder why Vista is not being accepted....
If you look at the course of Windows upgrades most of them require a small jump in system requirements.....

Win 98:
# 486DX-2/66 MHz or higher processor
# 16MB of RAM
# 500 MB free HDD

Win2000:
Pentium processor of 133 MHz
32 MB of RAM,
700 MB of hard drive space,
CD-ROM drive.

WinXP:
233 MHz
Memory 64 MB RAM1
HDD Space 1.5 GB or higher
Drives CD-ROM drive or DVD drive

And now the "jump" to Vista:

Vista:
800 MHz
Memory 512 MB RAM
Graphics card DirectX 9 capable
Graphics memory 32 MB RAM
HDD free space 15 GB
Other drives DVD-ROM

That being said, these are the minimum requirements for Vista but I can guarentee you that Vista will run painfully slow at anything close to these specs.

How you expect a business to keep up with this?

Once Vista dropped are we supposed to upgrade the 10000+ machines that are in use in the company I work for?

With every other OS you could get by with a small upgrade, Vista couldn't work on probably half of the PC's available the day it came out.

There's some flaws in your arguements.

First, the time span between Win98/2000/XP were only 2 years a piece. The jump from XP to Vista was what, more than 5 years? PCs jumped a HUGE amount in those 5 years in terms of hardware for the price.

Secondly, try running Windows XP on the minimum specs you mentioned. I guarantee it runs very, very slowly on a 233 with 64mb of ram.

In terms of hard drive space, when XP came out hard drives averaged from 10gb on the low end to 40/80gb on the higher end.

Now hard drives range from 120gb on the lower end to a terabyte on the higher end. 1.5gb for XP was a little more than 10% of HD space on a 10gb, while 15gb of space is guess what, 10% of lower end now! Go figure!

"First, the time span between Win98/2000/XP were only 2 years a piece. "

This is true but I'm sure you can see the minimal jump from even 98 to XP, compared to XP and Vista.

Win 98:
# 486DX-2/66 MHz or higher processor
# 16MB of RAM
# 500 MB free HDD

WinXP:
233 MHz
Memory 64 MB RAM1
HDD Space 1.5 GB or higher
Drives CD-ROM drive or DVD drive

2x the processor speed
4x the RAM
3 Times the HDD space.

That's with a jump of 2 OS's.

You can't expect general public to keep up with technology like most of us. A 5 year wait with no need for a hardware upgrade puts most people behind the times.

"In terms of hard drive space, when XP came out hard drives averaged from 10gb on the low end to 40/80gb on the higher end. "

Average size for HDD for the end of 2001 was closer to 30 + gig's
http://www.alts.net/ns1625/...

So it's closer to 1/20th the HDD size.

Dracon, why would people be complaining about Vista if it was a cheap upgrade? Also why is Microsoft currently forcing us to "upgrade" to Vista by not selling XP licenses anymore?

I purchased a top of the line PC in 2005 and yet my performance in Vista is minimal.

My friend set up his Grandparents brand new, reasonably spec'd (exceeds all minimum requirements) HP with Vista for them. He turned off everything you can turn off and it can't even run solitaire properly. Move a window and it jerks across the screen. Vista - totally pared down - is eating like 800 megs of RAM. That's just ludicrous for main-stream computer users.

Are you seriously recommending people use a Mac? Thats dumb beyond on comprehension, Vista hate is understandable, but using anything Mac smack of ignorance.

The Mac has been, and still is, the most overpriced and expensive computing platform on the market. EVERYTHING about the Mac is a ripoff. Just because it suck less than Vista does not make it a viable alternative. Thats crazy talk.

2.4 - Overpriced?
I would challenge you to actually price compare a few different Macs against comparably equipped competitors. I think if you do you'll find that the prices tend to be a lot more similar than you'd think - sometimes the Mac is actually less expensive. There are plenty of articles out there on this topic - like this one: http://www.computerworld.co...

3.1 - Quite a few things
It's a resource hog, it's still buggy, one of its selling points is DX10 which makes games run very slow for almost no visual gain, it does not improve very much from XP. Overall it isn't bad, but right now XP is a safer choice.

I'm not a fan of Vista, but in what ways is it buggy? In my time with Vista, I didn't encounter any noticeable bugs. The only thing that keeps me from switching is the slow performance in my favorite games, particularly Team Fortress 2. That situation is improving, though.

I do have Vista and for what I do it is fine. The average Consumer doesn't dabble in all that extra sh^t hardcore users get into.

I still like XP over Vista but at some point XP was like Vista, well look at it now. Everything I want to work on Vista works, yeah always little annoyances.

I've been running 2 machines with Vista Ultimate and I have been very happy with it. I've been following Windows 7 since I heard about it and personally I think MS is giving into the critics too easily. I remember all the complaints WindowsXP received when it first launched and now people swear by it. Vista does need more optimization but so did XP in its first few year's.

I don't know if it's a good idea to get into a marketing war with Apple. Whether you like the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads or not Apple's marketing is very successful. I can't think of any consumer electronics company with better marketing/mindshare than Apple.

The Zune is a good example of Microsoft going directly at Apple's market strength saying "look we're cool too!" and failing utterly.

Then without Henry Ford there wouldn't be mass vehicle assembly lines. How's your FORD? What, you don't own one? You mean there are alternatives that might do the job better and faster?

Not trying to hammer you, just your point is flawed.

My question would be, "Why does MS feel the need to spend such a vast amount of money against a competitor with less than 10% market share?"
