Branding Control

Thomcult writes: What Sony could have done was realise that the PlayStation controller (not just the symbols on the buttons but the whole controller) was iconic to PlayStation brand and a permanent fixture while all else around it changed.

The role that controllers play is to act as that link between the real world and the game world. Have you ever tried playing a game without a controller? Chances are that if you did you didn't get very far. They are essential and they represent the player's entire involvement with that interactive world.

1 - Interesting point
but wholly obvious when considered. When you see somebody playing a game your eyes immediately track down to the controller they are holding, as soon as you see that you don't even need to look at the console itself because you already know. The controller is the identifier of the console.

This is why it is sometimes better to *evolve* than radically innovate. Car manufacturers do it; the latest version looks like the previous version but with a few more modern curves. It means you can still recognise the car even though it is a completely different model.

2 - Its a hustle...
Honestly this is one reason why I havent picked up a PS3 yet (if I do at all). When play with that controller I feel like i'm paying the PS1 just better graphics, but when you look back everything looks the same. MGS1 registers to me the same way MGS4 registers to me so graphics are only for the draw in. Once your in there and its the same thing as before I feel let down.

The thing they dont mention is that as the technology changes the ways to take advantage of it changes so if the tools dont change you can only do the job you did originaly. Example: during the Ps1 era FPS were almost exclusive to PCs console were platform based. Then the N64 made use of the analog stick now 3d platformers could move to the next level and FPS could be fully realized now that you had a precision aiming tool. The Ps1 coped with an add on, everyone excepted it. The Ps2 comes along Fps are still growing so and 3D platformers are in stride so they dont change.

The XBOX comes along and opens up that FPS to console door there controller designed to play FPS and 3D games with a controller designed based off a Dreamcast design, it was wasnt streamlined enough so the revamped it (there is too much story in there to explain everything but) the fact is that the 360 controller is base on a model of design closer to the now than the Ps3 controller they shoe horn features in to stay valid but have you ever used something modified against something designed for the job.... No comparison. The success of the Playstation controller is built off of nostalgia not functionality.
