Unreal Tournament 3: Six Months On

Earlier this month, Epic Games teased Xbox 360 owners with some screenshots of the upcoming port of Unreal Tournament III. They failed to summon any interest. It's extremely unusual for such an event to occur. If we take Epic's track record, (let alone the success of the Unreal Tournament series), their games have been at the forefront of Shooter fans' minds since 1999. The Unreal franchise is a legacy, one that even commands a widely accepted graphics engine. Is the reason simple ignorance or is there something more worrying at work? Strategy Informer attempt to find out.

1 - I actually have this game.
And it's simply not all that fun, or exciting. The battles that take place in single and multiplayer just feel neutral and detached. I don't know if it's the prevalence of projectile weapons, the frequent disorientation due to maze-like map design, or the fact that there's no environmental interaction whatsoever.

Decent graphics and I love the mod network, but UT3 is nowhere near as compelling as COD4, which basically annihilates this game. Also, most people already know that when Epic Games releases screenshots, they're totally fake and are in no way representative of actual gameplay. This is why most of us ignore official screenshots of Gears or Unreal get put out. It's like IGN that show us true gameplay screens.

1.1 - UT is all about mods
You can get free maps, free mods, and basically get totally new games like the Lego version, or the Mario version.

So why would 360 gamers would want this game if no mods are allowed... Microsoft really have to do something about this and then the game will sell.

The Lego Mod was really the only great thing about this game.

And 360 owners can't get that mod so theres no point of them buying this game

Whatcha putting up for bet Blade? Also the poor sales could probably be attributed to the fact that they didn't start advertising until after xmas and people had already gotten other stuff instead.

This game is no good. If 360 owners buy it, then they are willing to buy anything... Just take GeOW because that game is truly great. UT3 is just boring.

The underwhelming sales of the PS3 are likely to continue with the 360 version, albeit total numbers may be higher given the 360's insatiable appetite for shooters.

As for mods. Epic has actually worked around this and they will be provided as DLC, so long as third parties agree (eg. Lego). So they should get most of the good ones and none of the abundance of piss poor ones!

Personally I won't be buying it, for a reason I think many others aren't. I have a good and diverse collection of shooters to keep me happy with COD4, Halo 3 and Gears all I really need. In addition there are more promising titles on the horizon such as Battlefield: Bad Company, Gears 2 and Resistance 2. Given that I'm spending more of my money on quality titles in other genres, particularly RPGs, Action and Strategy titles to diversify my gaming (Lost Odyssey, NG2 and Civilization Revolution most recently).

Let's look at it this way. Many people buy games for both single player and MP and when a game lacks one of those features, it doesn't sell as well as a game that includes both. A game that includes only a single player typically sells better than one that includes only a strong MP. So to that we can see why UT3 only sold about 0.5 million copies on the PS3. Take a look at Shadowrun, it only sold about 0.3 million copies on the 360. Games with MP only don't sell that great on consoles. I would say however that 0.5 million is not all bad for UT3 considering that the franchise is a bit over hyped and the game was just "good" and for those that understood the mods, it was slightly better than"good" but it was never great. The 360 version will not dwarf the sales of the PS3 version, I can guarantee that.

3 - its actually quite simple
developers/publishers are failing to realize that the recipient of a late timed exclusive is an unhappy and disgruntled gamer.

Many late games that made it to the ps3 way after the 360's release suffered. some say its install base or lack of gamers as opposed to high def blu ray player owners on the ps3 side. its that most ps3 gamers dont want is considered a 360 game ported to them.

bioshock will do somewhat well due to it getting such great reviews last year but to tell you the truth.. the bioshock hype is somewhat over.. and many of its reveals have been made public taking the edge out.

for many 360 owners i'm sure its similar.. the article says that it may be because of cod4. but i see many a 360 gamer excited about battlefield so that cant be it.

timed exclusives suck. and companies need to learn that.

4 - It think that it is
A combination of things- other great FPS games out on 360 already, with Battlefield coming still BEFORE UT3, and Epic already announcing and showing Gears of War 2. (As far as why 360 gamers show little interest in UT3). As far as why it did poorly on PC- I think more and more gamers are looking to consoles for their gaming, and people that still play on PC are mostly WoW players, or more recently, involved with games like Age of Conan that take all of their time...

It did poorly on PC because gameplay wise UT2k4 is still superior. There's something about that game that when you start a match, it'll be a few hours until you realize how long you've been playing. This is probably due to the fact that 2k4 took the formula of 2k3, threw away all the crap we hated (LIGHTNING GUN!!) and added everything we loved from UT99 and then some. UT3 while still a good game (outstanding if you want to get into making games) is missing that gameplay charm and kinetic action feel from 99 and 2k4.

It did poorly on the PC because most people pirated it. That's why they transferred it to Steam.

5 - I lost interest
the very minute EPIC said there was little to no single player campaign. Just the way I game. I have to get interested enough in the story, chars, and gameplay by the single player before I even wanna go online with anything.

Maybe I'll rent it... but I doubt it since this year's lookin' pretty packed with great games.

I see the rabids have already come to ravish this thread in an attempt to cover up how much better the improved 360 version is to the inferior ps3 version.

Notice the huge improvements in detail and lighting.

6 - i had this game on my PS3
and compared to COD this game is total SH!T

story mode is lame as all hell

online is nothing when compared to COD

maybe the fact is ppl have seen the best FPS and anything that comes after really needs to blow some minds and Unreal on the 360 without the mods will not do that!

I did have some fun online but COD was just so much more fun!

UT3 did not sell on the PS3 because it is boring. It is basically as generic as an online shooter can get. The mods are all that make it interesting, and it obviously isnt enough to keep it going. Trust me, stick with GeOW. That game is worthy of great sales.

Shut up Bladestar. When Unreal Tournament 3 was released on the PS3, personally I wasn't interested in the game. Maybe the game didn't sell well on the PS3 because the majority of PS3 owners JUST DIDN'T WANT IT?

PS3 exclusives tend to sell better than 3rd party titles anyways.

The reason why a lot of 3rd party games haven't sold well on the PS3 in the past year or so is because the majority of them are crappy Xbox 360 ports and PS3 owners know it.

But honestly, timed games like this shouldn't even be happening. If a developer actually has plans to release a game on the PC, PS3, and 360, they should just release all versions at the same time, even if it means that they have to delay the game a few months. Even though Bioshock is coming out on the PS3, I'm not really excited for it, but I will buy it.... eventually. Bioshock is coming out in November for the PS3, but Resistance 2 is coming out in November for the PS3 as well and I'm buying Resistance 2 first, and I'm sure a lot of other PS3 owners will be buying Resistance 2 first as well for the simple fact that PS3 exclusives sell better on the PS3.

Power Halo Rangers is the only shooter that matters for 360 owners..
