Elephant in the room: Apple TV preparing to take on gaming?

Apple is jumping back into the gaming business. Buoyed by the huge interest in bringing games to its iPhone product, Apple is now preparing to add full fledged gaming to its Apple TV product and distribute the games via iTunes ala Valve. Apple sees their potential to be the hub on home entertainment being threatened by the Xbox 360 and PS3. This is also a pushback against Valve which is rumoured to be interested in video and music distribution.
SONY and MS should be VERY worried.

Without an optical drive I don't think they are a threat. Besides, I've never heard anyone talk about getting an Apple TV system.

The PS3 has brought out PLAY TV in europe and they have that deal with netflix to bring downloadable movies to the PS3.

Apple should stick to IPODs and computers.

Then again, it could end up like the Pippen...

Also, the Apple TV isn't packing much horsepower.. It will be neat to see Apple go into the gaming market, but I don't see it becoming anything more than a niche market...

Yep, too many people are getting in. I hope it doesn't end up like the 80's again. The Apple TV will probably target the casual gamer which shouldn't effect any of the big three Consoles because they all have there exclusives. I don't see real gamers buying a Apple TV to play games. The people who will play games on it probably never planned on buying a console or already has one and will just try it out.

Another system to add to the shelf of trophies. Sony and Microsoft are not embedded into our heads. When people think apple they think over priced. IS this system easy to develop for fro a publishers point of view. It will sell and fade like the Panasonice 3do and Atari Jaguar

3.1 - The Difference
here is that it is multimedia focused and already has a huge established install base with iTunes. Transitioning those uses to the TV has been 'difficult' for Apple so adding gaming and a unique (?) controll mechanism might push them more mainstream?

Having it in your entertainment rack with wireless connectivity to your iPhone/iPod with the potential that the games can be played on both (via remote play or as an executable, see PSP/PS3) is pretty compelling imo.

It'll hit the casual market more than anything. But I don't see people specifically buying it for it games.

It seems theses days that apple can make anything and people will go crazy for it.

@Ali the brit

I don't see apples computers pulling off gaming anywhere close to MS is (PC wise). I really don't think they'd be that good in the gaming market.

6 - Who is Apple going to compete with again?
Sony and Microsoft have nothing to worry about. Apple TV is expensive considering that its a fancy itunes/media hub. I wonder who else is able to stream media? Xbox 360 and PS3 have always been able to stream media and are arguably much more efficient. If Apple put a GPU (or even a fast enough CPU) in the Apple TV it would be prohibitively expensive. Also, Apple better work on support and get a little more flexible with technology sharing. Apple likes having complete control over distribution and excessive royalties (look no further than the iPhone contract with AT&T). If you want an $800 console, look no further than Apple TV console redux. If they somehow they slip a sub par GPU and CPU (and make it a lot cheaper) we might be able to see XBLA and PSN type games as well as Wii like games. I'll pass.
