1.1 - it cant be like xp now
too late for that , everything compatible with vista has to be compatible with windows 7 which means more power hungry garbage with another layer to this train wreck of a os . xp was microsofts best OS and nothing would make things better unless MS wipe the slate clean and start from scratch (this isnt gonna ever happen) try and understand the many reasons why vista sucks people , its not because it was underdeveloped its because its One big cluttered platform with structure that just dosent work very well this day and age .

wait whats gonna happen to the people that spent 400 on vista ultimate 64?

oh yeah, theyll pirate windows 7 to recoup the money they lost on vista.

im no apple fan, but take this into consideration.

take the itouch, iphone mac ar whatever runs safari in a osx environment. then take a windows mobile phone, desktop laptop, whatever.

now try to open a webpage on the devices....now try to download some pron. which one is NOTICEABLY faster?

lol, so the 400dollar version of vistax64 was just a prealphabeta?
so how muchmore will windows 7 cost the prealphabeta suckers.....er testers. i expect the same level of marketing garbage for windows 7:

"buy windows 7 so you can play crysis2 on dx11 hardware, now you can shoot and mow down even bigger trees....dumber artificial intelligence is a free bonus"

windows 7= FAIL

i am a computer technician and one of the users that felt very disapointed by Windows Vista when it was first released.

BUT i tested Vista SP1 and a month later (2day) i have been pleased with it enough that i have installed it on my primary HDD which originally had Windows XP Home.

although i am happy with it, it does still take quite a lot of memory so if you have under 1GBs of ram and plan on running games then i would advise you to buy some more.

its not a perfect OS but its getting better

lol I wonder what happens after the XP cut off date. No one will buy a PC till 7 comes out. Ok, not literally, but it'll be interesting to see the consumer reaction.

And is it possible to reduce the memory footprint AND add touch functionality?!

yeah, I spent 200 bucks on vista. I guess it's good that MS is admitting that vista is a pile of crap instead of going with it and trying to fix it up. I guess we can all expect windows 7 to work well if MS learns from mistakes.

I wonder how they expect to convince informed consumers to adopt Vista now

Kinda messed up. Essentially diminishing Vista users into guinea pigs, and expecting them to upgrade again next year.

So they basically said that they used Vista to test out new things for the real, major release that is Windows 7. That makes me want to install Vista now, for sure.

I can wait two years.

I didnt like the sound of that article , even if for bad reasons (hum not really actually) vista got bad rep , dont go throwing around that vista was the basis , at least for the kernel .

People dont give a frak about how it runs compared to vista ... in worst case scenario it would be comparing a sleuth and a snail . People want something running as well as xp , in both speed and stability

The way it's described makes it sound like Windows 7 will just be a better working version Windows Vista - still based on the Windows Server 2003 kernel? Come on! Going from the information here this should be called a patch (or SP) and not a "new" OS.

XP works fine. ill stick with that unless they really do some damage control with windows 7 cuz i don't feel like dishing out some hundred for a broken OS.

Vista is commonly seen as being bloated, slow and incompatible. Once Windows 7 rolls around, hardware will be much more capable in your every day machine, so it won't seem as slow, the bloatedness will be worked on by Microsoft and compatibility issues will probably just come with time, Vista is almost there.

Or the whole thing could sink like the Titanic, who knows. Point is most of us don't need to care for 2 years.

The only way I'll pick this up is if it as stable as XP. I'm running Vista on my laptop and this POS has a tendency to BSOD when playing games. So if they don't step their "game up", I won't be buying.

it is assumed that it will be a version of vista's bests based on that, but i believe that it will build of off vista. it will be based around the same technology of vista, but i am assuming that it will be a whole new interface and a complete different perspective. so in short: Vista technology but new OS

17 - Vista isn't that bad surely?
I only write this as I have recently bought a dell xps 1330 with a T8100 core duo and tbh Vista runs like a dream. Fast boot and hibernate, on par with spotlight integrated search feature, nice UI, Once you get used to control panel implementation it's fine.

I also have a mac os x 10.5 core duo 2.1 iMac and used to believe it was peerless but vista on my laptop matches it for speed and usability.

I guess it maybe down to hardware, vista is good if you have half decent hardware. I'm only runing a 2.1 dual core with 2GB.

Of course I may have been lucky with drivers etc. Following Vista SP1 dell released some drivers for my system and all was fine.

I am running Vista Ultimate x64 edition and have NO problems at all with it. NONE. I play all my games, I run all my apps, and I don't have any problems at all.

But then again I just built my computer last spring with Vista in mind... so maybe the problem is not Vista but the machines running them?

One would hope that the folks at Microsquish would get their heads out of their hinnies and design an OS that gives the consumer what they want but, then , this is the real world. Which OS version of Windows had the most known bugs at the release date? I don't know but would like to find out. Curiosity. Nothing more.
Maybe Microsquish should start looking over their shoulder now and then just in case someone else has come up with a better OS that would satisfy the buyers.

pay for peer2peer live - Both PSN and XBL use P2P and servers. £50 is about £3.33 a month which is nothing.

rrod - its being fixed for that matter

hddvd - i could say the same thing if Blu-Ray lost the format war, its your fault for buying into the HD formats in the first place.

halo3

zune - The lastest Zunes are suppose to be quite good, I own an Ipod 80GB Classic and while I like it, its not the greatest MP3 player out there.

dx10 - If programmers can actually make a game using DX10 rather than using bits of it then I think we could see a great looking game.

vista - Some people say its crap, others say its good. Pretty much the same with XP.

windows 7 - You have not even used Windows 7 so how in hell could you know if its gonna be crap for that matter or good. I can also tell you have some form of bias against MS by using 'M$'. Something which only fanboys would use, pathetic and annoying tbh.

21.1 - sony online
Sony games get a choice of how they want to do online with microsoft you developers are forced on to the p2p live servers the only game i can think of that is not on live is ffxi. With sony your game can be on private servers owned by the developers.

22 - This is why people are pissed at microsoft
"For Home Premium 1GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor, 1GB of system memory and 40GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space."

They tell people that they will be able to run vista on that kind of a computer but you cant at least not very well. That is a computer that should be on xp.I get sick of people saying that if you computer doesnt suck you will be able to run vista and then microsoft saying that a computer that does suck will run vista.

I can't wait till some early builds come out for windows 7. As long as the becnchmarks say that it is faster than xp and vista im in.

23.1 - Yeah
I have the iso downloaded but never got around to it because I'm still uncertain how to do it and what I need to dual boot. (Ubuntu btw)

Anybody got a completely n00b Unbuntu manual?

Percy - 529 days 21 hours ago
23.2 - Ubuntu live disk
you should get the ubuntu live disk. With it you do not have to install anything the os runs off the disc. then at a later time if you like it then you can install it. There is a icon that will be on the ubuntu desktop that says install if you already have windows on you computer it will detect that and ask if you want to create a dual boot. Click yes instal and presto you have your dual boot.

24 - i just want the vista games on my xp
i hate vista for a couple of reasons {it asks for confirmation to load my favorite apps}

it never remembers my favorite views for folders and i have to change them back {very annoying}

over comlicated to set a system restore point {and failed twice to restore}

other then that its ok, and yes you need about four gigs of ram to get the most out of vista

25 - To Percy
Actually some developers on XBL use servers, EA uses its own servers in all its games, the makers of Frontlines: Fuels of War use their own servers. Both P2P and servers have their advantages and disadvantages for that matter.
