Sony: PS3 continues its "benchmark year"

VideoGamer.Com writes:
"Sony has announced that total hardware sales for PlayStation game systems reached 503,363 units for the month of April in the US. PS3 sales of 187,071 units represent a year-on-year sales growth of over 127%. In April more than 2 million software units were sold for PS3 - 410% year-on-year growth.

Sony has also had its calculator out to present impressive stats for Rockstar Games' GTA 4. Over one million copies of the game were sold for PS3 in North America, with 23.6% of US PS3 owners snapping up a copy. Sony says this represents a 29% higher attach rate for the title than Xbox 360. Enthusiasm for GTA 4 and the imminent launch of Haze and SingStar is also expected to lift hardware sales through May."

Those 125 million or so PS2 owners are finally finishing up their gargantuan backlogs of PS2 games and buying 1080p TVs now.

Sony has now crossed the breakeven point on PS3 hardware manufacturing costs and they are now profitable at just over the one year mark which is roughly in line with the time it took the PS2 to be profitable. Pretty amazing since the PS2 was using the much more mature DVD format and the PS3 was using the initially insanely expensive and newer BluRay format.

BluRay's victory is complete and the continued rise of BluRay players and movies will drive the PS3 manufacturing costs lower and lower.

The PS3 has already passed by the 360 in Europe even though the system was released 15 months earlier.

US sales continue to strong with Japan being the one area Sony needs to work on getting more Japanese gamer type titles out.

It looks like Sony has managed to repeat their PS1->PS2 transition with the PS2->PS3 transition where the old console continues to make money and slowly ramp down while the new console drops the manufacturing costs and sales continue to rise as last gen gamers make the jump.

And it looks like the hardware work Sony did over the past decade building up their PS3 first party developers with what looks to be if not the greatest lineup for a console year certainly one of the top two or three ever.

3 - as i've said since january the PS3 has been making it's best strides coming out of
a very successful fall-winter 07. This year the release of GTA4 and GT5, DMC4 and the hordes of games releasing over the summer it's no wonder they are poised to sell amazingly this year if a price cute goes into effect later this year. MGS4 and HAZE and singstar, 2 of which are amazing sequels to big sellers are sure to help move software it's all about marketing if they do it right. and that will likely work in their favor doing so.
