Bioshock movie helmed by Pirates of the Caribbean director

DarkZero: It has been revealed that Gore Verbinski has been signed to direct the film version of Bioshock. Verbinski recently directed all three of Pirates of the Caribbean films. Those films went then on to get eleven Oscar nominations between them, and ended up winning one.

"I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential," said Verbinski. "Of all the games I've played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative."

This...is FANTASTIC NEWS.

I really don't see how this could be any better, in all honesty. I mean, it could potentially be better...

However, considering how well done The Ring, and the Weatherman were, both in storytelling and in it's aural/visual presentation, this makes me really happy.

YOU MUST CAST MIKE PATTON AS ANDREW RYAN, THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE!

Gore Verbinski is a talentless hack. He may please the bean counters; but he sucks at making anything approaching "art."

The only upside to this is that his deficiencies will become more apparent when compared to Ken Levine

I'm perfectly capable of that. The very minimum I ask for is to be "entertained" (definition differs from genre to genre). If I am entertained then all is good. Please try not to paint me as an effete snob.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a case in point. What is good about that film? It is pure tedium from start to finish occasionally punctuated by Depp doing something to momentarily lift the film up (before he resumes his eye-rolling goon act). He was easily the best thing about though, but I worry that after three of these crap-fests he has been ruined.

Still he doesn't actually descend to the dizzying nadir of Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley*. The former is easily the wettest thing in the film (beating the ocean by a country mile) and the latter the most wooden thing.

But Geoffrey Rush was ok as a pantomime villain though.

The amazing thing is, that was the best movie of the trilogy.

Actually to refer back to the last sentence to my first paragraph. If disliking a poorly plotted, badly acted, atrociously directed film who's only selling points are large production values and stars makes me an effete snob, then yes. I suppose I am an effete snob.

But Gore Verbinski is still a talentless hack.

Just looks at his filmography:

Mouse Hunt
The Mexican
The Ring
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
The Weather Man
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

*Actually I take that back. I get the feeling she will get better

still the same answer i was hugly entertained by all 3 pirates movies, hell i totally love the ring too, its all a matter of "what to expect" from a movie.

im just getting sick of people calling succcessfull people "But Gore Verbinski is still a talentless hack. " if themself havent archieved anything like it. Hell sure Boll is a bad director BUT can you do it ?
can you direct movies ?

respect given where respect is due, gore verbinski definatly dont direct movies because hes a nice guy, he does it for a living and he does it VERY sucessfull. I respect that man for his archievements.

That is a ridiculous arguement. It that were true then whole areas of criticism for myriad fields will have to be nulled?

Don't like this film? Well where's yours? Who are you to judge?
Didn't think much of this game? Well have you ever made one?

Do you see what I mean? The fact I haven't directed a film, written a novel or coded a game doesn't mean I don't know about these things. I have literally spent years of my life learning how to discriminate between good and bad, and refining my tastes.

You may not agree with them. I may not agree with yours. That's fine. But I'm still allowed to call Verbinski a sub-par director, and the fact I have never helmed a studio film should bear no relation on that.

True, respect should be given when respect is due.

But I think it is safe to assume that we disagree on the amount of respect due to someone who has made a lot of money. I, personally, don't hold that in high regard. I certainly don't begrudge him his riches, but similarly, I don't respect him simply because he has acquired such riches.

Not to seem too much like a "make art or perish, hippy," but aesthetics and art are important to me then whether or not the creator became rich.

However, I have nothing but the utmost respect for Uwe Boll :-)

Finally, Hollywood execs pick a good director to adapt a video-game! Gore is an amazing filmmaker and is without a doubt one of the most versitile directors in Hollywood. Loved the game too, so this should be fantastic. Gore knows how to create stunning visuals, so it should follow close to the game. The Ring, The Weather Man and Pirates of the Caribbean are damned good looking and stylized flicks. My only concern is how will the film work if the main character doesn't speak? That might prove difficult to sell to the masses who are not familiar with the game.

In addition, BioShock is being written John Logan, the guy who wrote Gladiator, The Aviator, The Last Samurai and Sweeney Todd! That is very impressive line up for both the director and screenwriter!

It's a no brainer for me. One of the best told stores in a video game, ever. It's only natural to come to the big screen.
