Project Offset Going PC exclusive?

Ever since Intel purchased the Project Offset development team, much controversy has emerged about the release of the game. Namely, what platforms it would be coming to.

A recent video might shed some light on the matter...

Remi Arnaud, Senior Graphics Architect and Manager of the Game Engine Technology team at Intel says, "We're not limtied by the issues most developers have to deal with. As a game developer, you have to sell your game on the PS3, you have to sell it on the Xbox, because that's where the money is. That means you're limited because those platforms are old now. And so, what's comign out now is brand-new and so much bettter and all kinds of things that are not possible if you have to include cross-platform into your roadmap..."

Sounds like Intel's shying away from putting this game on the consoles and wants to take advantage of PC hardware, what else is going on behind the lines? Perhaps this is related to Intel's upcoming Larabee graphics platform?

Harsh if it is. But Intel are all about saving the PC right now, and sticking a big game like this on the consoles ain't going to help they're cause.

They're more interested in prolonging the life of PC gaming that just cashing in off one game.

1.1 - This game might be great
If it is anything like what they said it will be. This game will be pirated like crazy. And that is the problem with PC gaming. People will get the game and never pay. So sure ignore the PS3 and the 360, they may be old systems as he says in the interview. But they are the only place where a Hi def games will make money.

2.2 - Correction
it may be out on 360 as originally planned in time, but it will NEVER see the light of day on PS3, most of the cream of the crop western developers skip the PS3 because of its obvious deficiencies as a gaming platform.

Only money chasing developers like EA and Ubi develope games on all platforms because they largely value cash and stock prices over the art of game development

@ Tony agreed.
@ meeting . Yeah and if devs see sales of few 100k of their multi million $ project (no pun intended) what would they do? Sad to say but pc games are not getting even half the numbers of the console parts, unless its strictly online cuz of piracy.

Its not the devs. Intel will be making money from their graphics chips, which they'll be marketing this game with. They'll more than make up for the cost of development if it ends up successfully pushing them in the video market.

The problem pc gaming faces these days is NOT the lack of gpu intense games like project offset. In fact those games are the problem.
People are tyred of buying a setup for 1-2 games, almost everyone who bought a new rig when Crysis was released and only got crysis in return.
ut3 cod4 runs prefectly well on my 7950gx2 in 1680x1080, so i didnt update for 1 game (crysis)

That is a horrible return for min 800$ you spend on such a rig, even more when you update on time of the release.
Intel should start reducing theyre pricemodel and get into gamespublishing, thats the only way to sell cheap hardware and subventionise the costs through games sales.

U gotta be joking. I also have 7950GX2 XFX o/c to 590/1300 and C2D E6600 @ 3.4ghz. COD4 demo ran like $hit giving 20fps even at 1440x900 of my WS monitor.

"Consoles are old now..." Yeah right. Look at MotorStorm 2 or Killzone 2. They're already better looking than anything on PC (Yes, better looking than even Crysis). And on 360's front, there is a little game called Gears of War 2...

I was really anticipating Project Offset but it looks like they're gonna they're lesson the hard way, like Crytek.

Killzone 2 does look good... but looking better then crysis. Killzone 2 will problaly be in 600p ou 640p Like nearly every game on consoles.

Nothing on a console looks better than Crysis and Far Cry 2. IF you think it does you are delusional. IF you think KZ 2 or MS 2 is better then Crysis graphics wise. Then you are not comparing Maxed out Far Cry 2 and Crysis to KILLZONE 2 or Motorstorm 2 you are comparing the lower end pics of it to that. If you max them out then you get a whole different picture. There is a slight chance with Ray tracing and stuff on the console that they might look up to par with it to a point where its almost the same, but better I don't think so. DirectX 10 is another level of graphics a bit beyond DirectX 9. Its hard to say where it would stand against Open GL 2.1 though. Crysis on Max with all AA settings on looks like real life. Problem with Crysis is the fact that the engine was built to be a pure powerhouse for physics and graphics and open world. I think its just a little too much for anything out right now. It can run decently now with its patches on higher settings, but still not perfectly maxed out fully. Its going to be interested to see the MMO or two that is coming down the line with CryEngine 2 running on them. Far Cry 2 will not look the same from PC to X360 versions nor on the PS3. There will be differences. Unless Ubisoft holds back on that, but even so DirectX 10 adds a layer of detail that will make it look better.

Project Offset is very beautiful game. I have been watching it since 2006. I don't mind it being PC only if it becomes PC exclusive again. Likely it will get console versions at some point though unless Intel truly dedicates itself to staying on PC. I am very surprised that Intel has announced it is pushing itself into the game industry as well as pushing into graphics and upping the ante in the PC industry. What will we see next an OS to compete with Windows? Not likely, but who knows.

The fact that KZ 2 isnt due for release for another year doesnt mean anything to you? By then Crysis will be about 1½ year old and still be able to stand toe to toe.
And most FPS games on console run in 720p or lower, i cant even remember i ran a PC game WITHOUT AA in such a low resolution...

8 - this makes me sad
I really really wanted to play this on consoles.

Devs choosing to limit the amount of people who can get their hands on their games just so they can meet these dumb graphical heights is so asinine. It feels so ironically primitive, like dudes comparing penis sizes till no end, instead of pleasuring their lovers.

How many people really took advantage of Crysis? hell how many people even bought crysis?!

I'm ps360 and tbh things like HD are pretty cool right now, but its another thing that a lot of people could live without. I play GTA IV on 360 on a 32 inch non-hd tv i got years ago and i'm not that tempted at all to go HD - yet.

10 - This is the same thing Sony and Microsoft do.... pay for exclusives.
Intel and Nvidia better start paying game developers for making PC exclusive. Even if the game does not sell, the hardware will be sold to play the game... If there are no games, less and less hardware will be sold, specially graphic cards.

Good for them if they don't want to make money. If they limit it to a PC only release then the game will be pirated. All PC developers are complaing about it and it's stupid to limit your game to the PC if you don't have to.

13 - killzone 2 does look better than crysis
its the only game ever to be mistaken as cgi, crysis has yet to do that, crysis looks good only in the massive size, but the base graphics are stomped by killzone 2s lush visuals, you cant beat that in crysis, that game has been overhyped by you amazingly gluttoned pc fans, get out.

and to the developer

That means you're limited because those platforms are old now. And so, what's comign out now is brand-new and so much bettter and all kinds of things that are not possible if you have to include cross-platform into your roadmap..."

are you sure? wardevil makes this look like he hasnt seen wardevil, nor final fantasy 13, and thats only the beginning of a long list and a yet growing list of incredible titles that pc only has one game that looks good and thats crysis which is the glorified pc marvel that is hyped beyond belief by crytek and pc fans above what it really looks like, although it is really a sorry attempt at tracing real world enviroments whereas killzone 2 is something guerilla came up with in half the time as cryteks game that still beats it, thats sad.

get a life pc fans, but i know its your site anyway so you all will get the most support in your lame opinions.

and one question, how is this possible, one guy at the top of the page says that killzone 2 looks better than crysis, but then a guy comes later and claims crysis looks better?

first poster weighing in with 6 agrees

Consoles are old now..." Yeah right. Look at MotorStorm 2 or Killzone 2. They're already better looking than anything on PC (Yes, better looking than even Crysis). And on 360's front, there is a little game called Gears of War 2...

Hi there,
I´m Remi, the dude on the video.
As the the title suggest we (Intel) are working on the Larrabee project. We are looking forward to make the project offset game a showcase for this upcoming technology, and explore what this upcoming hardware architecture can really bring to games.
Like I said on the video, we are lucky not to have to deal with more than one platform/architectures, so we are not limited by legacy hardware limitations.
