The scans that I saw were scanned extremely poorly so I don't know how you can make such a harsh judgment(Or have better quality scans been released?). Regardless, based on the graphics of the original I would say it will be one of the best looking games across all platforms and it deserves more respect.

i never believed it would be super-duper-way-ass-kicking better than Gears 1 graphically. And it won't be. It will be a little bit better but Gears 1 was impressive as it is. What Epic should concentrate on is the gameplay and frame-rate above all else. Having that many enemies at the same time is hard to handle and i'd like to see them do it without frame-rate problems.

Based on those scans, Gears 2 will not be setting the graphical bar again... sorry to dash any feelings. But both KZ2 & Resistance 2 have already shown far more graphical detail from their games. The recently released R2 trailer is simply amazing. Resistance 2 will likely be the best looking game across all consoles this year.

The unreal engine is not all that and a bag of chips, Gears of war is the best looking game on Xbox 360 but not the PC or PS3. UTIII didn't look that good to me on PS3 or PC. So why do think Gears of war 2 with a slightly better unreal engine upgrade over UTIII is going to amaze?

But they looked far better than the old one when I matched the HD version Gears2 has an improvement over Gears1 what COD4 had over COD2. One more aspect is the levels are and draw distance is far huge and one stage was said to have A Brumak following you in Jungle with tress falling apart. But yeah more has to be revlealed but still the screens look way better than Gears was or UT3.
KZ2 looks so good because of postprocessing and UE3 is now equipped with it now.

Even with UT3, the pre-release screens were vastly better looking than the actual game. Gears 2 will look good. And MAYBE it will be the best looking game on the 360 when it comes out. But it definitely won't be the best looking game on all consoles.

And I was amazed at the perfect 10s it got in the graphics department. I've seen Epic do the same thing with Unreal Tournament 3. Looks decent enough in-game, but nothing close to what they published in Magazine screenshots.

I'm really just waiting for in-game video footage, because that'll be the true determinant of how it compares to the likes of Killzone and Resistance (once we get updated footage for those titles at E3).

We all now you should not see it from the distance you have from your computer now (and that is why it looks way so worse) but I do agree... Gears don't looked that great to me... For sure, it was a push back in 2006 but really, Resistance has already better models and less crispy images (just look at the weapon, try to forget that Marcus's odd/dirty ear and hair in front of you).

I'm not calling out Gears Of War or Gears of War II, but really, in my mind the outstanding in gears was the level design (offline), a smart use of the colors, pretty fresh (not really original) gameplay and they was amaze enough to put in a game style and narrative that attracts the Halo guys to it, which put a big amount of people playing it online (and we all know that the online success of some games depends on the number of people playing it, COD4 could be as good as 1 billion dollars in my wallet, but if no one played it, we would just let it go and moved away to the next fragfest).

But back to the point Gears stop amazing me back in early 07, from that 'till now we have many really graphical pushes, why should someone expect Gears 2, in the same old engine with little adjustments, to amaze us? I don't think it gonna be the best looking game even on 360 only, because Bioshock is already a little better that Gears 1, if developers now try and make their own way (read it: no more unreal engine shortcuts) to tap 360 hardware, they can easy pass Gears 2.

Mass Effect looked great but the frame rate issue where only when too much action was there and UE3 engine upgrade was not there and even then it was having huge open world environments. Also just think Mass Effect looked better than Gears and even UT3 and especially the characters where best in any game.

see, epics '05 bullshots were in game....on a high end PC running at less than playable framerates, with details turned on that todays high end rigs can hardly accomplish. See, the engine is capable in it(as far as i can tell), its just not playable yet, especially on the 360.

epic stated after making Gears of war that they had reached about 80% of the 360s potential. im confident gears 2 will reach that 100% marker but it might not have the same efect there was in jumping in 30-40% to 80%. if u get what im saying.

That is a foolish thing to say. Gears is only the biggest game this gen for 360 fanboys. Sony fanboys couldn't care less aout Gears. And reasonable gamers will agree, that while it was good, Gears is nowhere near the biggest game this gen. Especially this year when GTA4 and MGS4 finally release. Lastly, Gears simply took the mechanic from Killswitch and prettied it up, but more importantly, it came far too early in the generation for it to have a lasting impact overall for it to be the top game/series of this generation. Nobody knows what we will have next year or later. It's still too early to tell.

Gears of War won *piles* of Game of the Year Awards. "Reasonable" gamers know that Gears is one of the best games of the last two years, bar none.

Gears of War has 94/100 on Metacritic -- it is considered by *REASONABLE* people to be better than *ANY* game released on the PS3 _to date_.

lmao @ MGS4 being bigger then Gears 2... the last MGS did something like 3.5 million with a 120 million install base the last gears did 5 million with a 10 million install base. Gears WILL DESTROY MGS4 In sales and possibly review scores as well. The ONLY competition for gears this year is GTA IV.

KZ2 will be crap just like Kz1.
MGS doesn't have the huge user base they used to, and they have 1/10th the install base now.
R1 got destroyed by Gears 1 and R2 will as well.

I think COD4 is the new winner. And honestly, it has much cleaner visuals than Gears, running at 60fps in 1080p with 18 players online. In a year people will still be playing COD4 A LOT, and across all platforms.

COD4 was only able to achieve those visuals at 600p native resolution. Gears was actually at least true 720p with very detailed environments and character models. The only thing it could have used a bit more anti-aliasing, but it doesn't matter too much when playing at normal viewing distance. Gears 1 set the benchmark for graphics though. But it wasn't just the graphics that made Gears a huge seller, it was the fact that the 360 didn't have such a great library of games at the time, and the actual gameplay of gears was pretty innovative.

WTF?! 600p? We're not talking about gaylo. You don't know jack about what you are talking about. COD4 reached native 1080i and an upscaled 1080p resolution. That 600p crap is bullish. Only everyone and your guys' moms are playing COD4. And so they have been for the months since its release. Its been #1 on the online services for more that a quarter, and soon 1/2 a year.

And LaChance and all the other MS horndogs have got it all wrong. When games like Uncharted came out, and games like Killzone 2 were revealed, it was sorry @sses like yourselves that were trying to compare them to Gears. Cause that's all you had to compare, which wasn't much considering what you were comparing them to. So don't go spinnin the facts around. Uncharted already OWNS for being better graphically and is a much better game. To top it off, the developers of the game made sure the experience was "lasting"...that is, took more than 4 hours to beat.

perhaps running at 600p(is this even a valid res for tvs?) on the 360...i dont know, i admit gladly that i do not own one. I already own a windows based PC and its WAY better than that POS plus it cant red ring. If i got the video card thats in the 360 i would be downgrading a generation, and i only have a 7 series card(7950gx2). I dont want a x1600 in my system, its crap. Midrange when it launched, laughable now. as for the 360 having "more ram" as the fans like to say. it doesnt. And my 4GB kills it too. All im trying to say is, theres no reason for a lot of people to be in the least bit interested in another windows machine. I will never be convinced to get a xbox of any kind, mainly because i have taste.

I think just as killzone no one doubts this game will be eyecandy but again just as killzone it will be measured as how it stacks to its predecesor. For example Vegas 2 was awesome but in comparison to its predecesesor it was more of the same which might be the fate of gears.

Them Alan Wake screenshots were from the PC version in 2005, plus, it was coming to ps3 too before it was canned.

It uses a engine made by them and by part by insomniac, I find it also sad that most high profile exclusive´s on the 360 uses the unreal engine exept for maybe halo 3, ng 2 and fable 2, maybe it can´t handle the custom made engine´s used by Sony´s devs. XD
