Microsoft Says Nintendo's Legal Power Over GoldenEye 007 is More Than Just influence

Mundorare writes:

"Here we go again with a newly baked episode of the never-ending but always-interesting GoldenEye XBLA drama. Some weeks ago we published several comments coming from Microsoft about this sensitive topic. You don't see representatives from gaming companies commenting on unofficial games everyday, and if the unofficial game in question is the epicentre of a licensing conflict between three major developers, the chances of getting a single word equal zero.

That's why we felt both shocked and confused when they told us that "the rights to the title [meaning GoldenEye 007] are shared between Microsoft and Nintendo." As we said then, we would ask Microsoft again about that part just to make sure we heard well."

edit: to all who are disagreeing, read the second paragraph and rethink your decision

too bad for MS, most of Rare is at Free Radical, developing Haze for PS3, with great AI
:D

Now if only the Military could see what they can do with AI and defence systems....

i be back

i don't even understand what the big deal is. If msoft or sony were in nintendo's shoes, they would do the same.

I mean its golden eye great game about a decade ago but far from a system seller.

I don't think Rare owns any of Goldeneye 007 actually. They were part of Nintendo at the time so wouldn't that really mean the game belongs to Nintendo? What a waste of money Rare was for Microsoft. Every Xbox/360 game they've made has been bad. What exactly did Microsoft get when they bought Rare?

Let’s get everyone that went the game and start sending Nintendo some emails.
Cos we all love the game and it doesn’t matter what console it comes on..
and nintendo will have to listen to the fans

Nintendo doesnt have to listen to anyone. theres no way nintendo is gonna let a competitor touch one of their games. if a deal is reached MAYBE we would see the original on the VC.

Here's a novel concept:

Release it on XBLA;

-and-

Release it on the Virtual Console.

Win/Win.

I'm sure the logistics are more complicated than that. But that seems like a great solution to me.

If you want to play it that much I see you can buy the game and an N64 on eBay for around $25 total. There you go.

"Nintendo is retarded" is the correct statement. No one knows what's going on behind the scenes so you can't automatically assume Nintendo is at fault yet, they may be.

Nintendo did not make Goldeneye, yes they licensed it, and yes they published it, but Rare did all the work on making the game.

If Nintendo let it go ther the XBLA, Nintendo would make money, Microsoft would make money, and the gamers would be happy.

It would be win, win, and win for all three groups, but instead because of Nintendo, nobody wins.

Such a great game for its time but it will look an feel really outdated in 2008. The game won't feel the same without the N64 controller, rumble pack and three friends playing on a standard TV with 4 split boxes on the screen.

As much as I am disappointed, I understand Nintendo veto. Even if released simultaneously in the Virtual Console, Microsoft would have an edge as its version would be an upgraded one. As such, Nintendo has no incentive to allow it.

Geez, I cannot believe people are still discussing this POS FPS.

When Goldeneye was released, there were already PC FPS that completely blew the game out of the water and these titles have already been released on consoles.

Get over it already, Goldeneye is one of the most overrated games of all time. Even if it came out on XBLA with online play it wouldn't be popular at all once people got over the hype and realized what a primative game it actually was. Updated graphics or not.

12 - so many fankids on this thread
Its jointly shared but apparently Nintendo will not let MS touch one of thier classics. Which is fine by me. Dont help the competition at all, and they're #1 this gen. They need nothing from no one.

MS fankids need games, that's all that im getting out of this fiasco.

Microsoft shouldn't be pestering Nintendo like this and making them look like the bad. The truth is Microsoft wouldn't allow halo to be put on the wii so why should Nintendo do the same for a game that THEY published. If Nintendo says NO then its NO! I dont think negatively of them because of this because Goldeneye was one of the greatest first person shooters ever and I personally wouldn't want to see it in the hands of Microsoft. Just my 2 cents.

If a was microsoft i would stick it to nintendo and publish perfect dark. Msft owns the rights to that game so they can do it. Plus, perfect dark was the same core game just different weapons and storyline.

I agree a remake of the original Perfect Dark would be great and a nice substitute. It would really be sticking it to Nintendo, so Microsoft would enjoy that, but the game was pretty good as well, so we gamers would benefit from it too. It ran like molasses on the N64, but I'm sure 60 fps nonstop on the 360 wouldn't be a problem. Add some extra levels to it, some tweaking here and there, and you have a fresh game.

Yea, right I'm so sure that everyone on XBL would stop playing Halo 3 and CoD4 to go play Goldeneye. Give me a flipping break. People that really want Goldeneye to come back out are like those fat girls that wear Nintendo gear to try to appeal to nerds that actually know nothing about gaming...aka, posers.

I was a Goldeneye and Perfect dark fan before I became a Halo fan, and all of my friends would love to see Goldeneye for the XBLA and VC.

It is my opinion that the only way we are ever going to see a release of this old classic is to get Wii gamers to pressure Nintendo into getting it released on the VC. And in order to do that, they are going to have to let microsoft release it on XBLA. Nintendo couldn't care less about xbox gamers or microsoft getting this game, but if their is a HUGE demand (and I am talking really huge here) for this game on the Wii then I'm sure they might, maybe, possibly, (they goddamn well better) agree to release it. I don't think there is any other way. Microsoft could offer them millions and I doubt nintendo would budge. Sad but true.

I used to be a fan of Nintendo, but for me their true prime peaked back in the days of the SNES. The N64 was great and all, but not enough good games, though they did give us some bonefied classics. The Gamecube had some decent games, but nothing absolutely stellar, besides Metroid of course, that was unique to the system (and I owned over 30 Gamecube games, don't try and convice me otherwise, RE4 doesn't count it came out on PS2 as well). The Wii, it's fun but gimmicky, just not for me. I never did like how nintendo did buisness. Not that the other two companies are that much better, but nintendo was always very sneaky.

Either leak it, strike a deal with Nintendo, create something original or shut up, it's getting boring now.
