Analyst: 360 Outsold PS3 in February NPD

Xbox 360 eked out a slim win over PlayStation 3 in the US in February, according to Jesse Divnich with virtual stock market The simExchange. On NPD Group's January US hardware sales charts, Sony's PS3 performed notably well against the supply-constrained Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. That month, PS3 was able to top Xbox 360 for the first time and come within striking distance of Wii.

But ahead of the release of NPD's February sales results, The simExchange forecast in a Monday note that Xbox 360 will once again top the PS3, while the Wii has a typical runaway month in first place.

supply constraint is an excuse. Why, in the third year of production is MS meeting supply problems? They only sold 7 million units last year so why would they be meeting supply issues? Quick answer: they arent.

Sony only has to remain in striking distance before their great hits come out. The fact that they are this close and possibly winning on a monthly basis before their system sellers come is quite a sad fact for Microsoft.

well i am guessing there will be introduction of new sku so they limited the supply for that. Regardless its safe to say 360's were not in abundance

Actually a supply problem in January would conincide with the selling better than they thought in december. Which is what happened. If your manufacturing process is done based on sales estimates than it is possible that a product's availability may drop shortly. I mean, there are times when Liquor stores run out of beer, but it isn't because there isn't any beer, it is because they messed up on ordering. It is there own fault, don't get me wrong, but it can happen.

If they arn't having "supply problems" then explain January and Febuary differences. Nothing different from one month to the next, no big exclusives, no price drops. So... I ask again, if there wern't supply problems then why the change?

It sounds like fans on the otherside of the fence are just making excuses to me. Afraid to admit you were wrong, and instead of owning up to it, you slip out the back door with excuses.

MS isnt going to constrain supplies because it was coming out with a new SKU. Thats such an idiotic business move and it doesnt make any sense at all. You dont cut production if there is demand. You produce them as usual and cut the price a little to get rid of them. Either that or you have the retailers send them back to be modified and returned as a new SKU. What you dont do is take your fricken product away from the consumer.

MS knows this.

@pegger- The problem with that is they are so far into the manufacturing process that they could churn out tons of consoles in a few weeks. They may have been able to say that in early January, but to use that as an excuse in Feb. is rediculous. Not only that but you are assuming they did sell tons of consoles.

US is MS' stomping ground and if they cannot maintain a massive lead here, worldwide sales will have the PS3 in second plave before the year is over. That's if you count the Wii as a contender in the next gen war. Some think it's a fad and does not deserve to be spoken in the same breath as the 360 and PS3. :)

I guess I should ask, what do you mean by close? Worldwide figures are hard to calculate until the end of the year. But the european and the japanese figures is what pulled the ps3 over the 360 last year.

MS DESTROYED the ps3 last year in the US. Considering the numbers last year in the US, Sony should be pretty happy at the moment. Remember none of their cross system franchises have hit (with the exception of R&C).

The only place where this console race remains close is in the US and UK. Every other country has decidedly chose the PS3 (excluding the wii). Sony has effectively closed the gap in the english speaking territories and are looking to pass them forever mid this year. But yeah the ps3 is outselling the 360 worldwide and by quite a bit.

5.1 - It's important because..
NPD and Media Create are the only trackers that track Hardware sales... all we have for Europe is the infamous (and wonky) VGchartz for Europe lol

The world is bigger than USA, but without an official firm tracking hardware sales for Europe, we have to rely on media create & NPD (as well as statements from MS, Sony, & Nintendo) for official hardware numbers

But even NPD has incomplete data... They don't get all the retailers and while they do put out very good educated guesses, they still are not 100% accurate. The only numbers we can really go by are the ones released by the companies usually at the end of the year. Until then we have to rely on guesstimates and incomplete data, no matter the source.

Sony has to be outselling the 360 already if it wants to overtake its userbase by the turn of the year. Do people honstly expect MGS4 and other exclusive games to attain 4-5million PlayStation 3's each? Although they are system sellers, they will not be selling hardware on that scale.

Later when those games, Sony should be aiming to be hitting a 2:1 ratio worldwide with hardware sold. But if they cant even manage to beat the 360 with supply constraints, despite having the Blu-Ray factor, there's no spinning it - that's bad news.

Calling it "bad news" is a bit much, methinks. You're underestimating Microsoft in their home country...Sony has an uphill battle and they are steadily going uphill, which is good.

If they are to pass the 360 this year they do need to do better in NA. But given no major exclusives have hit since Uncharted they are doing pretty good. Sony should be aiming for 2:1, I agree. We shall see how well MGS:4 sells in Japan. I dont think it will move the massive amounts of consoles here in the states but it is just another reason to pick up a PS3. I also think that Sony will drop its price by 100 bucks by the end of the year.

A 299-399 ps3 would do the trick.

10.3 - but the tide is turning
They're neck and neck right now but I expect that PS3 sales will continue to rise while 360 sales start to drop off. Here's my argument.

Sales of the 360 likely peaked with Halo 3. Anyone who really wanted a 360 probably already has one. I doubt there are many people who are holding off on buying a 360 for any of the games announced for this year.

On the other hand, there are large categories of gamers who are waiting to buy a PS3 until their franchise of choice is released: MGS, FF, GT, GOW, SOCOM, etc. so sales will likely go up as those games are released.

Another milestone game is GTA4. I'm sure it will sell a ton of copies on both platforms but I would argue that it'll be more of a system seller for the PS3 as PS2 holdouts will use it as an excuse to finally buy up to an HD console.

I think it's very likely that we'll see a 2:1 ratio by the end of the year.

So a game that's MULTI and had a great life on the PLAYSTATION brand...don't get me wrong microsoft will sell more on the software side(cause of it's user base) but from a hardware stand point the ps3 will benefit the most....

11.2 - If MS drops the price in the USA
I suspect the GTA IV will help MS the most - especially with the exclusive content advertising that is sure to come. Frankly, I think MS is going to do quite well in Europe as well once its price drop happens.

But you have to love the price drop - that means the PS3 is going to drop in price too.

If the 360 pulls ahead of the PS3 for feb NPD, then MS will say their "supply constraints" have been addressed. Of course, they won't announce anything until the day before the numbers are released.

18 - Wow all this before the price drop
Good stuff looks like the 360 and ps3 are both selling well shows theres enough room for 3 console this gen.

But with gta 4 plus added content coming out and a price drop for the 360 mainstream users could tip the balance towards 360.

As for ps3 exclusives if you have not realised both consoles have highly anticipated games coming out this year.
I don't think mgs is enough to make casual gamers buy a ps3 i mean after all it is us guys that play these hardcore games.Theres competition every where you look.

mgs 4 vs splinter cell conviction
ff13/white knights story vs lost odyessy/mass effect
god of war 3 vs ninja gaiden 2
gt5 vs forza2/pgr4 (not mention grid racer)
killzone 2 vs gears 2
rachet and clank vs kameo/banjo and kazooie
you get my drift.

it's gonna be an interesting race. But i fear that most casuals wanna beable to play the latest ea games, gta 4 at a reasonable price.

it all comes down whether people want there console to solely play games or do more for their money.

i seen you said your a good father and a member of the Air Force. I cant believe you when you said that because of the words i have read from you over the last so many months

your a grown adult and it blows my mind...owow

and btw if your looking at what stock to buy you would be a fool to invest your money because MS sold 20,000 more systems in one month then Sony. Tell the truth if you buy stock in anything you have to be more a adult then what i see around here. If your buying stock in MS just because you think the 360 is going to set the market i feel sorry for ya. You can never get past the failrate and consumers are learning this via all kinds of websites now. If Yahoo says the 360 is the worst system in history then you can bet ppl wont be buying MS stock becuase of it. They will buy stock when they make a new OS but not over a 360

Just like buying stock in Sony doesnt mean your judging them on a PS3. Your judging them on blueray and the large amounts of eltronics they make

21 - Microsoft has been out for over 2 years
They should be stomping the competition not winning with a slim lead. Especially in its own backyard. I believe Sony is ahead worldwide. That's Microsoft's fault though. Should have diversified their lineup a bit and up the quality sooner rather than later (GoW was the first real next gen title during its first year on the market should have been more.

But this could be considered the hump for the 360 anyways - especially since the first xbox was out for 4 years why not do the same this time. 2 year mark for Xbox 360 its entitled to suffer a bit of mid-life crisis.

It was good while it lasted. I don't believe xbox 360 ever was intended to be Microsoft's true Next Gen machine anyways. Slap together piece of hardware that could compete well against Sony that was rushed a year early to get as many early adopters as possible. Similar strategy Nintendo used but Nintendo was not going to push the HD this time. Watch for MS and Nintendo to duke it out in 2010 while Sony plays the price war game with the PS3. Will be interesting to watch come Christmas time 2010 (or perhaps 2009 if things go really bad)
