WoW Gamer gets divorced due to addiction

World of Warcraft is leaving in its wake an increasing list of casualties. Even though she's never played the game, 28 year-old Jocelyn is one of the fallen. A well-spoken California resident, she divorced her husband of six years after he developed a crippling addiction to the smash online RPG.

"He would get home from work at 6:00, start playing at 6:30, and he'd play until three a.m. Weekends were worse - it was from morning straight through until the middle of the night," she told Yahoo! Games in an interview. "It took away all of our time that we spent together. I ceased to exist in his life."

Jocelyn had been friends with her ex-husband Peter since the age of 13, but it took only nine months for her marriage to collapse. "I bought the game for him for Christmas 2004, when it first came out. By May we had our first serious discussion about where our marriage was going, and by September I had moved out," she said.

Peter's domestic duties also suffered. He stopped paying bills, she says, and refused to do his share of the housework. Jocelyn doesn't hesitate to cite Warcraft as the main reason for her divorce and remains emotional about its impact on her marriage. "I'm real, and you're giving me up for a fantasy land. You're destroying your life, your six-year marriage, and you're giving it up for something that isn't even real."

blaming the game is like...oh I don't know to be honest. games adiction is pretty real in china an places like that so health warnings ought to be given on box set or maybe in game warnings suggesting you take break after...i don't know...six hours? six hours is a long time.

This story has happened many, many times. WoW gets a lot of blame, but all men can lose their loved ones if they don't control their addictions towards any game.

Interesting... everyone is blaming the gentleman. Addictions happen for a reason and more often than not... it is not due to one deciding factor. It appears that only one side of the story is being portrayed... and in my experience, when there is a split in a relationship... it usually is not a nice split with more oft than not both parties badmouthing the other. I would venture to guess that these two had problems beforehand and they progressively got worse and the game provided an outlet. Games can become very engulfing if you let them just as with anything else in life... but to blame the game as their reason for breaking up is silly. Just as with how all gamers were enraged when that silly lady-"shrink" made that accusation with Mass Effect without even seeing any footage of the game, ... people should not judge others based on one persons view. Who knows... he could be an idiot after all.

yea sometimes video games are crack especially computer games. I'm happy that i was able to understand how rediculous it is wasting all your time playin a game that means nothing. You cant really accomplish anything in life by spending it playin video games. I played Diablo 2 for my whole freshman year in highschool and i regret doing it but at the time I was to blind to see what I was missing... this guy needs to realize that a commitment made to your wife under the eyes of God no matter what religion you are is far more important ... one day this guy is going to wake up and say "what the F*** have I done"

PC gaming is dying.

PC gaming has expanded to MMORPGS, and it litterly effects alot more ppl than you really think.

Too bad MMORPG's to many is classfied as an addiction, but its a good sign in business terms.

14 - people get addicted to anything
unfortunately, videogames are seen as less harmful to alcohol/drug addictions.

so the tell-tale signs of addiction are not as apparent until the person is already too deep to stop by themselves.

there should be an institutionalized method for dealing with videogame addiction. i'm not saying we need a videogamers anonymous, but some people would benefit from professional help in getting them to enjoy videogames in a healthy manner.

You can't blame Blizzard for making kickass games.

On another note, I would never neglect my wife for a game like that. Who needs to become a level 50 demonslayer in a fantasy land when you already took your vows to become a level 100 sex machine in real life.

25 - this really grinds my gears..
they talk about how WOW caused this. Well WOW didnt cause this, his addiction caused this. He obviously had an addictive personality. So my question to Yahoo is... WHY DONT YOU TALK ABOUT MORE SERIOUS ADDICTIONS. Yes video games can be addicting but atleast they dont hurt you. You never see any stories about people addicted to drugs and getting a divorce. to me that is a little more serious cause the person could actually die! i mean come on quit trying to blame games its the person! not the drug. not the game.

The game is what CAUSED the addiction. Remember the guy from korea who died after a 3-day-long stint of WoW? I'm not saying the game is necessarily at fault, and for the most part the person who lacks self-control is at fault...but something deep in my head is starting to smell a MASSIVE class-action lawsuit.

I think WerdB is the only one who is looking at the big picture here. I mean come on do you blame alcohol when someone is an alcoholic? or do you blame crack? Hell no! Come on atleast he is playing games and not killing himself (in a faster way atleast). They obviously grew apart. There is probably some Warcraft nerd woman out there for him anyway and they can do the same thing and be happy and make sweet Warcraft babies.

Yes I digressed. The fact is its no one's faults because the person that makes the choices. Even with addiction you still have the choice to be addicted.

I don't know, man. WoW is a type of phenomenom that society hasn't had to deal with, but now that it's starting to affect people's schooling, jobs, and relationships, I have a feeling that we'll have a LOT to blame WoW for in the coming years, mainly in the form of gaming legislation.

Becuase if this game is causing all of that sh!t, divorces, addiction, and job loss ALL affect the economy. Divorced people spend less money, jobless losers don't contribute anything to society, and moron kids with no education are equally as worthless to us as humans altogether.

The government sees these problems, and while they don't necessarily nip it in the bud, something's gonna be done soon...and I think all it's gonna take is one man who decides to go apesh!t and kill his family because they interrupted his WoW time for the gov to intervene and pass gaming laws.

Are you serious? Do you realize the implications of what would happen if they passed gaming laws? I am sorry and all due respect but this is the dumbest (Republican) thing I have ever heard (in the last 5 topics).

You would create underground WoW is what you would do. Remember when they made alcohol illegal? Yeah that didn't go so well. It increased crime for one. Secondly, it is our RIGHT to have this ENTERTAINMENT. Its not crack and it is not destroying our body and mind (as fast atleast).

Compare WoW to REAL drugs and than shut your mouth and realize there are bigger problems than video games.

Dude, I seriously hope you weren't directing that at me, because the only point I was trying to make is that if there are ever any gaming laws passed, WoW would be a big, if not the sole, reason for it...I'm not in any way advocating game laws, I think they're ridiculous political posturing and more than likely nothing will come of it.

And yes, there are bigger problems and they need attention, but it's always been the next big media blitz that's always gotten dealt with first, and while I'm no conservative, it's always been Democrats that have lobbied for game laws, (Hillary Clinton and Tipper Gore are probably two the worst enemies modern gaming has right now, aside from Jack Thompson).

You're kidding right? Some nut shoots his fam due to interrupting his game? You can not in your right mind blame video games for peoples mental disturbances. You see people all the time in the news trying to link violent outbursts with video games... and it is a crock. People who commit crimes and violent acts are already mentally disturbed... I guess Dalmer played pacman before killing. That is the problem with this country... everyone trying to lay the blame on someone else. Starting with education... be a darn parent and raise your children.... if you see a problem.. nip it in the bud instead of trying to shuck your parental duties and blame a silly game. Now with divorce... you can't seriously blame a divorce on one element of their lives. There are always other underlying problems if this is the case. Pass gaming laws? And what would you like to suggest??? Aside from restricting access from mature rated games which is already why we have ratings...what else is there that wouldn't violate the Constitution? Or would you like Bush to propose a Constitutional amendment also???? Wouldn't be the first time he proposed that crap...and failed! We are all adults (and those who aren't...your parents need to wake up) and we need to all take responsibility for the things we do instead of trying to lay the blame on the doorstep of another.

30 - So...
I thought this article was pretty funny, divorcing a guy over a videogame. I guess now he is a free man he can play all the WOW he likes. She can do her own thing too. Why is it really that necessary to watch TV with someone anyway? I don't get that. As far as I am concerned you only need "alone time" when you do the business why do women feel they need a guy to watch all those boring chick shows with?

I do agree though these people literally killing themselves over a videogame is crazy.

I was addicted to Final Fantasy VII and Grand Theft Auto III I played them all day and most of the day but I still slept and took occasional breaks. I think when Grand Theft Auto IV releases I will be hooked on that as well.
