New Square Enix MMORPG under development confirmed

The GDC website reveals that four Square Enix staff members will be speaking at the Game Developers Conference 2008. The full list:

· Fumiaki Shiraishi and Toshiro Tsuchida will be presenting an in-depth look at the development process of Square Enix's Wii Ware launch title Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Young King and the Promised Land.

· Isamu Kamikokuryo, Final Fantasy XIII's art director, will touch upon the secret of Final Fantasy art, how he gets inspiration, how he was trained, how his concept art influence the game development, etc.

· Taku Murata, the head of Square Enix's R&D. In this talk, Taku will describe the whole process of the engine development; why now, why not third party engine, what is unique, how it is being developed, what were challenges, etc. You'll be able to see the technological essence of Final Fantasy development.

Taku Murata's page also confirms that a new MMORPG is in development:

"The new game engine will be used for FINAL FANTASY XIII, new MMORPG under development, and other titles in the future."

This pretty much confirms that "the new MMORPG", which might actually be Final Fantasy Haresis XIII, will be released for the PlayStation 3 as it will use the White Engine.

No the white engine takes advantage of the cell, so sorry because this won't be coming to the 360. FFXIII won't be going 360 and so will this one not be going 360. It's the SE games that are using the Unreal 3 engine that are going to be multiplatform.

Looks like 2009 will be another great year for the PS3.

WHY!!!!????

Bioshock, Gears, Mass Effect are on UE3 which is a cross-platform engine - but that doesn't mean they are coming to the PS3! Does it.

The White Engine is cross-platform and the MMO will be coming to the Xbox 360. Stop feeling so worried. FFXIII and FFXIII Versus are PS3 exclusive, the MMO is not. All three are made with the White engine.

Exactly you just made my point you can't really judge if it's exclusive solely on the engine. FF Last Reminant happens to be multiplatform and it doesn't use the white engine. The title "FFXIII" will make the game PS3 exclusive. Just like how FFXI took so long to get to the 360. It's because Sony has some sort of deal for the FF # name.

Mike...I don't know what you're on, but I'm telling you this from what Square Enix themselves have said.

The White Engine is cross-platform, but of course concentrates very heavily on the cell - which any good cross-platform engine SHOULD do.
FFXIII and Versus use the White Engine. Both are PS3 exclusive.
The MMO uses the White Engine, but is cross-platform.

I did contradict myself but only because Deep contradicted himself first and gave the idea to contradict myself. He named 360 games that are exclusives but use the Unreal 3 engine. And then he said since the White Engine is multiplatform it's going to the 360. If that were true then those 360 exclusives would be going to the PS3. SE hasn't made an annoucement yet really. Your conclusion on saying it will go to the 360 is that FFXI did go tot he 360 but that's after years. It will be timed exclusive on PS3. It won't be a simulataneous release.

Not true, while it is true they used to they sold a large amount of the shares. Sony now own around 10-15% of Square and with the success of Squares games worldwide i imagin sony get fairly large dividends at the end of each year

After the merger between Square and Enix, Sony's stake is roughly 10% unless it has increased in the past 4 months since I checked. You're both right though, the White Engine is both created for PS3 and I'm guessing the middleware multiplat one is lacking PS3 specific features like SPE optimization but it does exist.

both project sylpheed and infinate undiscovery both use the the white engine... also

@ deep while it says multiplatform. i do remember them saying that PC was definately the main target for the MMos and the PS3 as well. and because the 360 isn't HDD standard, square wouldn't really sell too many of the mmo's on the 360 becaus enot everyone has an HDD 360. with that being said. multiplatform can also mean PS3 and PC... like alot of the SOE games coming out this year and next. also Hearesis was only copywritten. it was never announced and neither was a specific platform.

So to just claim that it's going to be on the 360 without square confirming it is pure assumption and speculation on your part.

i will say that square will have an MMO on the 360 at sime time in the future but we dont know what it is and when, and if they do it will be long after the PS3 and PC versions because they both have HDD standard.

What does all of this matter if this MMORPG is going to be cross-platform?
SquareEnix has already announced 2 titles for the 360, Infinite Undiscovery(something about this game just looks....meh) and this unannounced MMORPG.
People are acting like it's XIII and vsXIII that's going over to the 360.
The point is. An MMORPG=Money, SquareEnix is a business that likes to make money, the more platforms this MMO crosses the more money they make and the more players in the game itself.
In the end everyone is happy.....as long as the game is good.

5. Haeresis is the US name for Versus which is an extremely silly name and would probably make the ignorant masses think it's a one-on-one fighting game....or even worse, some kind of mad crossover between Final Fantasy and a mediocre cel-shaded FPS. (i.e. "Final Fantasy" vs. "XIII")

Seriously though, Haeresis and Versus both mean similar things in Latin in addition to sounding similar.

Haeresis/Heresy: "dissent or deviation from a dominant theory, opinion, or practice"

Versus: "in contrast to or as the alternative of"

Ever since it was announced, "Versus" never sat well with me and whether Haeresis is an alternate title for it or a completely different game I'll wager that a game called Final Fantasy Versus XIII will never come out in the US.

If White Engine is cross-platform... then why are Square Enix paying to use Unreal Engine 3 for their only multi-platform game, The Last Remnant?

Bare in mind, White Engine uses 4 of Cell's SPEs as a rule.

It's equally possible that "cross-platform" relates to PS3/PC... but I digress, the White Engine was made because of the development challenges of PS3, it's made to take advantage of the PS3 hardware.
