Sony offering rebates on returned HD-DVD players.

In the latest advertisement from German retailer Saturn, Sony is offering 150 Euros off the purchase of a Sony BDP-S300 when current HD DVD owners turn in their used players. This is an outstanding deal for those high definition fans in Germany who would otherwise have been left with a very expensive paperweight. Currently this offer is only available in Germany.

It would be nice if it was a Panasonic BD player and wasn't over priced.

The BDPS300 is notoriously slow and does freeze up from time to time.
A better deal would be a PS3.

It's only profile 1.0 and is currently our most returned BD player.

Germany, ebay your HD DVD unit and buy a Pani 1.1 player today!
It's the only player on the market today that matches the PS3 in movie loading speeds and it has a SDHC slot!

Sony made a few deals with Saturn in the past. I also remember the deal when they gave you a free Ps3 if you smashed your 360 against a wall. funny IMO

Probably got some free media coverage for it too.

Anyway, this deal is a nice gesture by Sony and may win them some brand loyalty points from customers who might otherwise have harbored some resentment at Sony for "killing" HDDVD.

lol yea if they gave the same offer for ps3 that would be cool. Now that its pretty certain blu ray has attained victory sony does eventually have to split focus on selling ps3's and stand alone units as well

6 - Sony is doing everything right
Their actions might seem desperate, but a see it as Sony being agressive. Something that they where not in 2007. They are out for blood.

theyre out for blood concerning something theyve been more interested in from the start of this gen -- movie players.

still not too aggressive on the gaming end though.

Sony seems to be building momentum in 2008 across all of their product lines.

Consumer electronics is a cyclical industry so it could be that Sony is just timing their push to coincide with the general public's readiness to upgrade to HD (tvs, games, movies). Maybe they thought 2007 was too early for most people.

9 - Hmmm this makes me think...
Why doesn't Sony do this for the PS3? Think about it:

"Tired of your XBOX360 getting RROD? Well for a limited time only, trade in your RRoD XBOX and get $150 off the price of any Playstation 3 console!"

I have both systems but if my XBOX RRoDs I'd trade it in in a second for a PS3... and then sell the PS3 on EBAY and buy a new Premium XBOX 360 with the falcon chips and HDMI!

(Guess this is why Sony would never do the deal lol)

9.2 - If Sony offered this on everything from BR player to PS3....
They would totally lose their shirts over it. They already are losing money by the buckets on the PS3 side...now you want them to incur even more debt by making even less off each unit? Heck...why doesn't Sony just give them away? Come on guys...common sense...use it.

9.3 - @9.2
Actually according to published reports, they are not losing as much money anymore as the cost to make a PS3 has dropped to around $400 bucks and they have shrunk the blu-ray lasers even more, which will also result in more cost savings.

And while I'm sure Sony would never do it, picking up an extra 1-3 million PS3 owners and potential blu-ray movie buyers AND hurting Microsoft at the same time is an interesting proposition. Most analysts expect them to drop the price of the PS3 again soon anyway due to the cost savings ($299-349 for 40 gig?). So right before they do an "actual" price drop why not try this deal first for a limited time (30 days?) and once the promotion is over, THEN do the ACTUAL price drop?

When put in this context it's really not that far-fetched. Maybe I was being unrealistic in wanting $150 off but $50 to $100 off is certainly reasonable.

That's actually remarkably generous of Sony, perhaps they really are turning over a new leaf? I'll admit that I was very put off by thier c*ckiness when this generation started, but in the recent months they seem to be going back to being the Sony of the Playstation 1 days, and that means that they know they need to keep thier customers happy, which is good.

13 - THIS IS A GREAT IDEA
Toshiba is always touting how great their "stand alone playes out number the competition". this would be like a one two punch, not only reducing the number of HD DVD out there but in fact switching the user, its like selling 2 blue ray plaers for the cost of the rebate. And then they still have all the tech. from the origonal players to rape.

example. 900,000 HD DVD 400,000 Blue Ray (stand alone)

50,000 do the swap 850,000 to 450,000. Heres and easier ratio... 2.25:1 then after the swap 1.89:1 and thats only selling 50,000 players

15 - IMO...
all they are doing is showing how anit-competition they are, MS and Toshiba are well within there rights to counter this move any way they like. IMO multiformat could have survived, people could have gone HD-DVD or Bluray based on there own personal preference for any feature that one had over the other, news HD-TV's improve all the time, does this mean I know have to ditch my current TV. How is the consumer supposed to know who's going to win, Warner should have took the side of the consumer not the Hardware manufacturers. And please stop with the 'nice move by Sony' when all they are doing is trying to drive HD-DVD out of the market.

Bluray and HD-DVD could have survived along side each other.

My point is that a trend has been created where if a large company see's fit they can potentially cripple a product.

I doubt Warner and Toshiba/Microsoft will ever see eye to eye again.

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are formats, not consoles. There's a big difference. Consoles are somewhat required to have accessibility to formats. It's really silly for people to think HD-DVD and Blu-Ray could co-exist. I don't seem to remember people hoping for a new DVD format to co-exist with DVD.

"Warner should have took the side of the consumer"

Which was blu ray....quite clearly stated by any internet figures you can find.

And no they can't co exist. I cant watch transformers. The general public doesnt want to own 2 formats mate.

I disagree. If there were only one console platform, we'd end up with the PC. Competition is good and I welcome it.

I will not call you an idiot because that would be an insult to idiots, but you are an aggresive desperado, why would Toshiba or any other company just step aside because your crystal ball says that we should have known the winner, do you think Toshiba wanted to loose all that money.

Isn't this against some kind of trading monopoly law? To offer rebates on returned competitors stuff? That's like MS saying trade in your Apple stuff and get a rebate. I'm sure someone would sue them over that.

Weird.

Yeah it seems there would be some law against this but... it is pretty consumer friendly. I personally like the idea. I know computer software is famous for doing this stuff. Most anti-virus software you can get for free if you show proof of a competing product that you owned.

People talk a lot like Blu-ray is Sony's format. Is it because they invested a lot of interest in the product by putting in their gaming console? It is weird who to blame for killing HD DVD. Do you blame Warner for switching formats which ultimately killed HD DVD or do you blame Sony for putting it in the PS3 which made the format have more sales despite a lower price on HD DVD?

Seems there are some misconceptions floating around here.

1) the deal is by Saturn, not by Sony. It is actually NOT a deal at all, because you can get the same BluRay player for EUR 320,- online. This indicates that the gross market price for Saturn is way below EUR 300,- ... "Selling" that player at EUR 499,- is a joke, even if you subtract the EUR 150,- rebate it is still more expensive than the best online offers for the same player.

Result: They sell you a Bluray player at a high fake price while giving you a little rebate for your HD-DVD player. And then they will sell the HD-DVD player for EUR 100,- as "preowned" product. And as you now lack the HD-DVD player you will need to rebuy movies as you can not watch your HD-DVD's without a HD-DVD player.

Its not very likely that this is a Sony marketing action. There is a way to strong Saturn/MediaMarkt stench attached to it.
