Well with the somewhat shocking news out of Warner that they are dropping support for HD-DVD and releasing their high-def titles exclusively on the Blu-Ray format and all the buzz that it has created on the web, I figured it was time that I offered my 2 cents on the issue as to what it all means both near term and long term.

Retard who nobody likes, saying that MS "ripped" people off simply because HD DVD is biting the big one is dumb. The success of HD DVD is not in MS's control. The death of a format does not equate to MS ripping people off.

actually if HD-DVD is officially dropped then that's when i'll buy the add-on or a stand-alone hd-dvd player because that's when the prices will be coming way down and next-gen high def movies will be affordable.

it's like everyone who is buying a ps2 now. even though really nothing new is being produced for it, people buy it because the prices are so low and the great games from last-gen are much cheaper now. i'm hoping that HD-DVD movies will become under $20 bucks and i can pick up a ton. they are still going to be great quality no matter if HD-DVD is dead. here's hoping that the prices bottom out because i'd love to own the bourne trilogy or batman begins or a bunch of other great movies that are currently only HD-DVD. i'm sure they will eventually become blu-ray, but probably for 34.99 a piece like most blu-rays up in canada.

i think if it were labeled under tech it would ok, but it does have relevancy to the format and the ps3 in large. The ps3 plays dual roles as a movie player and gaming machine. Should one aspect be taken out completely? I think both the movie format and the gaming itself are intertwined.

Now the PS3 still has a long ways to go, Sony needs to keep working very hard because the competition is brutal.

I don't see Sony getting arrogant anymore, they took too sick of a beating. I think the free rides for the competition are over.

HD downloads might be the way of the future, but it won't be now and it just sounds not like a good idea. As I've said before, only people in major urban centers will be able to take advantage of this because of faster connection. Right now, I'm stuck at 5Mbps and with 13Gb of traffic limit per month. Now this only applies if we download these movies on a computer. If it's the same principle as Movie-on-demand, then I don't really see the difference between the two of them. Also, what happens if I want to keep the movie if I watch it a lot? My kid likes to watch a movie again, again and again. So what I have to pay every time I watch it? It's just not a good system...

That article said that the author predicts no more price drops for BD players? I highly doubt that. DVD players, in the beginning, were often 300 dollars or more. Now they can be had for less than 50 dollars. While I doubt that BD players will see a sub-50 dollar price tag, I bet by the end of 2008, the average price will be somewhere around 200. Not to mention, with the near-demise of HD-DVD, Sony should be even more motivated to get prices down so everyone into HD can have access to the technology. Everyone will benefit.

Article suggests that Blu will lose the war to digital download but I disagree because:
A.Nothing can replace hard copy for a long time.
B.HD quality and stuff is taking more and more space and one can't have a huge collection of movies on his/her hard drive.

Hard drives are getting bigger all the time, there are already 1TB hard drives and I'm sure that as PC gaming will continue to move the industry forward with new tech then we will see bigger hard drives. I'm planning on building a new PC in the Summer and one of the things I want, is a big hard drive. Maybe 750GB or 1TB.

I agree that I like a hard copy myself but I do also support DD. I find it funny that people think the HD format war is over just like that, the format war is still not over and its still dragging on.

worry Blu Ray will die next. 8 million Blu Ray players out and no movie cracked a million yet. There is even more BR players out that movies sold and the new 2.0 standalones will not be mass market price for another 3-4 years.

i think blu-ray won not because of warner or paramount exclusives, but because of the name blu-ray it sounds way cooler then hd-dvd, blu-ray sounds sexy and hd-dvd sounds old, yep i said it, sexy biootch.
