Sony admits the 40GB PS3 is still using 90nm chips

Engadget reports: "We'd been hearing that Sony's new 40GB PS3 featured a revised design with a 65nm Cell processor and improved cooling, but sadly it looks like those reports were in error.

"A Sony spokesperson has told Heise Online that the 40GB model continues to use 90mn processors, but does feature an updated design with a lower power consumption of just 120 to 140 watts, compared to 180 to 200 watts for the older models. Sony says its still planning on moving to 65nm processors in the near future, but for now, it looks like the PS3 is 90nm across the board."

I don't have any problems with cooling and I haven't heard of any. Just make sure the machine is a place where air can flow. Not in a close cabinet or what.

well, i'm guessing it still generates less heat because sony decided to take away several cooling vents. does the decreased voltage actually mean anything? aside from consuming less power, does it mean more optimized hardware or something like that?

Doesn't matter who approves it. The 65nm newsstory also got approved, which has been debunked now. So if it makes the PS3 look bad or not, the 65nm 'news' made it look better than it is. really matters hey. I mean I keep my 90nm 60 gigabyte ps3 on for weeks and it doesn't overheat or nothing. I kept my 360 on for a day and played it that day and it stuffed up, I got a replacement because of the deal I had with EB Games but yeah I don't think it really matters, aside from cutting electricity bills by a dollar if that.

Why the new 40gb consumes LESS power is rather simple - it has soo many missing features and is cheaper and tacky looking over the better 60gb model that indeed it will consume less power.

They're still coming to the system... and in most cases people don't keep up with games as much as you think.

The childish made up "admit" aside (they just said that the assumptions by some people lacked any merit) it is interesting that they managed to reduce overall power consumption from ~200W to ~140W without using the 65nm design chips. Thats ~30% lower power consumption by using only an optimized cooling design. I would love to see how much they can reduce it again when they start using 65nm chips for the Cell and the GPU. And then there is still the next step to 45nm ...

45 is a long way off. They will go 65 then 45. Sony had many iterations of hw revisions with the PS2 as well. Yet a new revision to be released. They are good at it. And it really does not matter. It will look the same mostly, and play the same. No big deal. It is not as if it is needed to improve the quality of the machine.

So why does this matter at all? It doesn't. 90nm or 65nm does not matter in a system that has absolutely NO OVERHEATING ISSUES to begin with! And it's quiet to boot already. Going to 65nm will only be progress for the latest, more refined and thusly cheaper technology. period.

For me its still amazing that they got the power consumption down WITHOUT changing the CPU. Shows a) that the CELL is very power efficient (simply because the other components can be accounted for a big part of the power consumption) and b) how they could optimize the machine just with reducing/changing parts/layout on the current model. The GS might play a big role here, but then, I can't imagine, that this chip uses that much power. I would still like to know, how they got ~40W-60W out of the existing parts. Probably better RAM modules, but this would also require newer chipsets (??). Does anybody know, if there's a picture available of the new motherboard?

I like both systems (and own both), even though the 360 is a more powerful machine, the PS3 will have some good games coming out next year.

I suggest that everyone do some research before making nonsense posts.

If you do research you will see that all the developers say the 360 is more powerful. Research fill rate and memory. Not only that but the Cell processor as well. You will be shocked with what you learn.
