Looks like the 40gb is doing very good. THe ps3 is picking up steam. But wowo look at how the wii is dominating its amazing! Nintendo will probably go strong until next year. Ps3 has to much heavy hitters coming out next year so i dont see the wii dominating for a long time.

PS3 has the price drop, 40GB version, ceramic white, and a bunch of games out or coming out that month.
Wii has Mario Galaxy coming out.
360 has its own price drop, arcade, and mass effect.

I think in Japan PS3 is going to tie with Wii for November, since everyone who wants Mario Galaxy probably got a Wii already, with the 360 following behind by a tenth.

VGChartz is usually pretty accurate within 5% of the NPD data and we get a basic idea of whats happening every week. The console wars aren't won with a single big weak but good sustained sales.

You know, that the PS3 launched in March this year, and within these ~8 month has reached a 50+% total numbers sold compared to the 360? (1.9 vs. 3.8Mio). That's a pretty amazing job. BTW: overall sales in Spain have already surpassed the 360 (309k vs 219k).

But the 360 is still putting up respectable numbers in EU and according to Vgchartz was beating the PS3 on a weekly basis before the PS3 dropped price a few weeks ago. However the 360 is still beating the PS3 by such a large margin in the US that it more than makes up for any sales advantage PS3 may gain in EU or Japan.
2.) Although I believe the 360 is doomed to last place in Japan. EU is still up for grabs. 360 and PS3 have been goign back and forth all year since the PS3 launched.

Although the heavy hitters are not out yet there is sufficient media to justify the purchase

Its not a big factor if you sell 50 million systems and only have a small attach rate of 1.5-2 games per console and have another system with say 30 million but have attach rates of 5 + games a console...you do the math were talkn at least 50 million more games sold if we look at it like that....we truly wont know what the industry is going to look like until 2008 is over and all he companies have dipped there toes in the water and have shown what they got up their sleves. Sony needed to maintain their selling figures. Three weeks ago the PS3 sold 108,000. Two weeks ago it sold a thousand less and last week it sold 73,000. That's a significant drop in sales even with the price cut.

For Sony to overtake Microsoft and Nintendo before 2009 they'll need to double Xbox 360's global sales each month but at this rate it seems like the rate of sold machines is dropping with each week.

Hopefully the games that are coming will change but this weeks results (when we see them next week) will be very telling.

I know this is good news for the PS3 in EU. But last time I checked the PS3 has beaten the 360 in EU sales 3 weeks in a row right? It also beat the 360 in Japan for the umpteeth week in a row. Yet somehow the 360 still managed to outsell the PS3 worldwide every single week. The US sales numbers more than make up for EU and Japan sales. Also remember before the latest price drop the 360 was regularly beating the PS3 in EU sales. At least according to this same VGCHARTZ that now all PS3 owners swear by. Seems to me that only a month ago PS3 owners were dismissing VGCHARTZ. PS3 fanboys are the worst.

Although I prefer the 360 to the PS3, I tend to believe the sales stats from VGCHARTZ more than anything else. So if the PS3 is beating the 360 in any territory I'm cool with that. Fill rate is one of the primary ways to measure graphics performance - in essence, it's a number describing how many pixel operations you can perform. The fill rate on the PS3 is significantly slower than on the 360, meaning that games either have to run at lower resolution or use simpler shader effects to achieve the same performance. Additionally, the shader processing on the ps3 is significantly slower than on the 360, which means that a normal map takes more fill rate to draw on the ps3 than it does on the 360. And I'm not talking about small differences here, we're talking roughly half the pixel pushing power.

In theory, sure, but in reality it doesn't work out that way. Game code simply doesn't split well across multiple processors. You can probably find a way to split a few things off fairly easily - put the audio on one processor, animation on another; but generally the breakup is always going to leave several of the SPUs idle or underutilized. On top of that, it's usually not CPU speed that restricts the visuals in games - it's fill rate.

"Uh, Blue Ray!"

Great for watching movies, but not so great for games. Getting data off the blue ray drive takes about twice as long as it does to get the same data off the 360's DVD drive. That translates into longer load times, or god forbid if your streaming from disk, tighter constraints on the amount of data you can stream.

Ok, you got me there - it does have a lot more space, and there is the potential to use that to do something cool, but thats unlikely to be realized in any useful way. There are tons of compression techniques available for data and I'd personally rather be able to get my data faster than have more of it. Most developers who use the entire Blue Ray drive are doing it to work around other problems with the ps3 such as it's slow loading - for instance, in Resistance: Fall of Man, every art asset is stored on disk once for every level that uses it. So rather than storing one copy of a texture, you're storing it 12 times. If you took that entire game and removed all the duplicate data, it would likely fit on a DVD without any problem. They do this to speed up load times, which, as I pointed out before, are painfully slow on the ps3. So in this case, the extra space is completely wasted.

I suspect a small number of PS3 only developers will optimize the hardware to do something cool. However, this will be an exception to the rule, and will likely involved game designs that are specifically designed for the hardware and funded by Sony. If those will prove to be fun or not is another question.

Most of the performance centric research into the PS3 has been around making it easier for developers to get the same level of performance you get out of the 360 naturally. For instance, some developers are using those extra SPU's on the cell to prepare data for the rendering pipeline. Basically, they take the data they would normally send to the graphics chip, send it to an SPU which optimizes it in some manner, then send it to the graphics chip. So, once again we see an 'advantage' in hardware being used to make up for a disadvantage in another area - a common theme with the ps3. And this introduces an extra frame of latency into the equation, making controller response slower.

So, the common theme is this; developers must spend significantly more time and resources getting the PS3 to do what the 360 can already do easily and with a lot less code. Lets look at how this translates into practical realities for a moment:

Why the PS3 version often pails in comparison to the 360 version, and why exclusives often suck:

As outlined above, getting equivalent performance out of the PS3 requires a lot of work unique to the platform, and in many cases, even with all these tricks, you still won't see equivalent performance. Thus, many ps3 games have simplified shaders and run at lower native resolutions than the 360 versions. On top of this, there is shrinking incentive to do this work; the PS3 isn't selling.

The code needed to make the PS3 work is most likely only useful to you on the PS3, as the types of tricks you need to do to make the thing perform are very unique to the platform and unlikely to be useful on any other architecture now or in the future. These issues all stem from unbalanced hardware design, and any future hardware that is this unbalanced will likely be unbalanced in a completely unique way.

Finally, there's the problem of resources. Game Development is, at it's heart, a resource management challenge. Given finite resources, do I have these five engineers work on optimizing the PS3 version to look better, or do I use them to make the game play better and fix bugs? Do I change my design to fit with what the PS3 hardware does well, or simply run the game at a slightly lower resolution on the PS3 to make up for it? Developers striving to push the PS3 hardware have often sacrificed their game in the process.

This post might come across as a lot of Sony bashing, but it's just the reality from the trenches. Sony let their hardware be designed by a comity of business interests rather than a well thought out design that would serve the game development community. They are going to loose hard this round because of it, and I hope that in the next round they take lessons from this round and produce a more balanced and usable machine.

What interesting about alot of those Euro figures is that its 3.8M for Xbox (Shipped or sold? Who even knows anymore and how many of them still work?) compared to 1.9M for PS3. (Thats sold buy the way with about 1% failure rate.)

So its 2:1 Xb:PS3 in Europe. But thats 2 years sales, compared to 7 months or roughly 160,000 a month to 272,000 a month. Did you read that correctly? You do the math.

Actually it does because 360 is still riding the top games of 2007, halo 3 and the new 360 skus. You haven't factored in that PS3 will cut the margin down for sure in 2008 with blu-ray, the better exclusives in 2008, disney movies on blu-ray in holiday 2007, and future price cuts that bring down the PS3 cost closer to the 360. It's nice how VG charts is finally giving weekly estimates. 360 fanboys keep claiming that 360 is doing a little bit better than PS3 in Europe right now. If the #s stay the same which they probably will because PS3 had the price drop and 360 dropped there price and the big game Halo 3 released, the PS3 will tie the 360 in 9 months in Europe. Based on these numbers the PS3 is officially in better shape in the 360 vs PS3 war than HD-DVD is in the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD war.

Now if you look at all the week to week sales since the ps3 launched in Europe according to *vg chartz there is really NO clear winner (except Nintendo) because sometimes the ps3 is up, sometimes the 360 is up, one thing is for certain niether console is dominating the Euro market over the other, like the Wii is doing,(UK does actually seem to favor the 360, which is the biggest market inside the Euro so that helps micro's overall Euro #'s alot) but as for hardware sales please stop fooling yourselves about the wii, price really isn't the biggest reason WHY the wii is winning (price is always a factor) but the reality is the very non traditional gamer types represent a whole new huge market and the wii is attractive to them, sooner or later us hardcore/traditional gamers are going to have to respect what the wii is doing, I for one think the wii sucks, but I fully understand I'm not the typical soccer mom, kid, or adult who's new to gaming= Now as for ps3 vs 360 the question is what will happen if micro has a price drop? or even more dangerous the ps3 sales have already begun to decrease significantly, what if ps3's increased sales #'s dont hold even without a 360 price drop?

If you check each week from the same site then you'll see that that the PS3 outsold 360 for each and every week since launch except for 3 weeks (the halo effect).

This welcome news for sony,they have had to learn this the hard way i think the ps3 is turning a corner now due to sonys price drop and sony finally understanding soft is needed in order to sell more of its consoles.

I was in Game in the UK yesterday buying EOJ and while I was there they sold 2 PS3's and that was at 10 a.m. There is no doubt that the 360 has very good games but I do believe it has a niche market i.e. "hardcore" gamers who enjoy their FPS's more than any other type of game. The PS3 will attract a more varied type of gamer and therefore will probably sell more than the 360 eventually.

The price going down is a big help for Sony but I still feel it maybe a bit too pricey for some families.

The 360 looks to be reaching it's plateau already but I maybe wrong. We will get a clearer picture after the holidays.

But you are a minority that seems to favor both consoles "evenly". Most of people on this site in one way or another favors one console over another at different levels. For me it PS3 for the simple reason that it has and will have the games that i like to play.Like God of War,SOTC, RC. I have nothing against the x360 at all and i will eventually get one when MS fix its hardware issues and release more games that interest me like Too Human and NG2. A tie in the end i think will be highly unlikely as was in previous generation but i know it will be really close this time around but my money is still on Sony to win. BTW, nice post.
