Rumor: $399 40GB PS3 Release Date Oct. 30th

Real Deal Gaming is sure you've all heard the rumor of the $399 PS3 its been going around the web for awhile now lately but even way back in July predicted by a Microsoft employee. Rumors have pegged an official announcement in October. So doing a little searching and making a few calls and putting all the information together Real Deal Gaming has come up with a well informed/unconfirmed/educated guess of when this rumored $399 PS3 would finally hit store shelves. last generation $299 was the perfect starting price point...this generation, for all that you get with the package, $399 is the new $299...Wii owners start at about $310 with an extra controller anyways...if I were buying a Wii, I would stop and really have to think twice with a $399 PS3 sitting beside it...when the PS3 is $299, man, people better watch out! but at $399 the PS3 will move...I, and many others, purchased the PSP (Gigapack) for $299 and that was a handheld...and purchased my 360 at $399...it's a really great price for what's under the hood of the PS3...so sitting by some great games...and don't say they don't have great games coming...UT3, Uncharted, and Ratchet sound ace...a Holiday 07 PS3 looks rather tempting for PlayStation fans, curious 360 owners, movie buffs, and PS2 upgraders...mass market is around the corner...if it isn't here already...watch this space...

Everybody gets 3 year warranty. Even the first 360 bought. That's almost two years ago and another year to go on your warranty then.

Synex, the 360 already sold about 12 mln. The PS3 sold about 4.5 mln. The 360 is outselling the PS3 in USA and Europe month after month. So tell me. If the 360 is selling not more then 20 mln. this gen, the PS3 won't sell more then 10 mln.

You have to make some differences in those things you say:

A HDMI port isn't needed, especially not if you don't have a larger then 42 inch HDTV, because on average 32 inch models you won't notice for sure. HDMI gives washed out colours compared to component.

I use VGA and Component, VGA looks a tad sharper then component, but also less vibrant colours.

On the other hand, 200 dollars/euro off a price of total 600 dollars/euro in 6 months or about 11 months... it's a freaking one third of its total price... 33% in less then a year. Normally a console drops that sharp in price not untill it's 2nd year of live.

It's a clear sign things aren't going like Sony planned. They're getting pretty desperate.

Fact 1: Hdmi is clearly superior to VGA when extensively tested on most 1080p tv,s the majority did not accept 1080p signals from the Hd dvd via VGA so had to be downscaled. (check december issue of what Hifi)

@felman: No, no, no. How many times does this need to be said? The ps2 had a cpu (EE) and a gpu (Graphics synthesizer).

US 60gb ps3's had both the EE and the GS. Euro ps3's and 80gb ps3's only had the GS, software emulated the EE.

This 40gb ps3 will probably remove the GS (which will probably save around $20 in manufacturing costs) and thus BC will be gone. Because the GS is a b!tch to emulate with software, Sony programmers would pull their hair out trying to emulate the GS with software.

Actually, I think the answer is the 2 free games (Forza & Marvel Ultimate Alliance) with the pro and elite SKUs, and a new core SKU that includes 5 arcade games, a 256 MB memory card and a wireless controller. I also think we’ll see a price cut or new promotion with the HD DVD drive.

Desperation is when you pay $50 million for just two episodic contents. Desperation is also when you pay for Bioshock not to appear on the PS3 but only on the 360 and PC. Last but not least, desperation is when you over hype and over advertise one game (Halo 3) to save your entire franchise and sadly that over hyped game is destroying some 360 owners consoles. Best PR ever but don't worry, you're covered for three years.

i dont think Halo 3 has anything to do with it though. this was more of a desperation of how to quickly cut done cost and make profit because of the huge final beattinng they are taking with the ps3. they have officially phased out the 60gig and 20gig in 2 regions and only have 1 model in 3 regions. making profit. while it's still at a high price. they need to sell more and soak up the lost, seeing that they just sold a major part of one of there subsidaries to gain some money to do this. this cheaper PS3 will likely be the answer to more profit and take them out of the red. i expect it to have no memory card readers and 2 usb port. wifi, and software emulation at 40gigs. with the spider man 3 bundle and ratchet and clank. a cult favorite that commands a fan base of 11+ million. if it's anywhere between the price points of say $279-$399 things will be very interesting. and if this is the new 65nm cell model then things have gotten really good for them because they said that we could expect the 65nm cell chip in falll of 2007. so this announcement would prolly have something to do with this new cheap ps3. aND THE 65nm cell chip.

As each new PS# SKU comes it loses features. The PS3 60 GIG (launch) which people bought at launch is the best one. It has the most backwards compatibility. And it's just perfect. Then the 20 gig, had less features. Now then they release 80 gig, less backwards compatibility making it inferior to the 60 gig. Then rumors about a 40 gig which would obviously have less features than the 60 gig, so anyone who bought one at launch isn't getting ripped off at all. Because they have the premium version.

Now with 360, each SKU that comes out just keeps getting better :\, warranty increased, etc etc. That is when I would be pissed. (which I am because now I wish I hadn't bought one for christmas) :'(

I think that Sony really wouldn't have wanted too many people to buy PS3 too early. There wasn't the content to support it. Sure, die hard fans would pay a premium price to be an early adopter... That's why I was prepared to buy one at 425ukp!

Could it not be possible that Sony has conciously decided that now is the time to go for the mass market? The content is getting to the point where there's pretty much a good game in all the main genres, plus more and more bluray hitting the shelves.

I really don't think that Sony would go into this without a pretty well worked out strategy... All i see with these rumours is the possible "main thrust" bit of that strategy coming to fruition? If it is desperation it's much more likely to be wii inspired than 360 imo.

Even as a huge 360 fan, it's hard to argue against your logic. MS seems to have been cruisin', resting on their laurels so to speak. The $399US PS3 is an aggressive/slightly desperate move on Sony's part. But it's one that-- despite the losses they will incur-- makes sense and will put Sony RIGHT BACK in the console sales race. A $449 Xbox 360 Elite vs. a $399 PS3 with Blu-ray? OUCH. A lot of Xbox fans like me who were looking forward this Christmas to upgrading to the Elite will definitely think twice... MS will have to move QUICKLY in response, or risk Sony reaching their goal of over 10 million by Spring/Summer '08, when, by the way, MGS4 and Killzone 2 will be waiting in the wings. With this price cut, it looks like Sony's goal of "hanging on" until next spring is not only possible, but likely....

"Can't we all just get along?" I have said it before, and I'll say it again and again: I LOVE MY 360!!! Enjoyed it since January 2006 and all that. Still, why not enjoy the PS3 too, especially now that us "common folk" can now afford the thing. The biggest obstacle for the PS3 has always been its price. Sony has had to learn this lesson the hard way, but it seems as if it is a lesson they finally have learned. This $399 PS3 deal would be too good for any true gamer to pass up, at least not without thinking long and hard about it. before i recently got hurt at work and been awaiting surgery i was saving for a ps3 i had only a few more checks to go. anyways ive just owned 360 well 360s ive had to replace 3. even though i renewed both my live accounts recently costing me 100 bucks id let that go take that loss and as soon as i was able to return to work, id prolly trade in my 360 for a 399 ps3 that way i could buy more games for it with the cash id save by trading in the 360. dont take me wrong the 360 is great......when its working but everyday i play on live for several hours (rainbow six vegas) im scared of this one breaking as well.

I believe that the reason for the recent price drops and multiple skus of the PS3 are not out of desperation. In fact I believe that Sony originally wanted to roll out a 40gb and 80gb this fall originally instead of Nov of last year. I think M$ launched aggressively on purpose and put Sony in a tailspin because they knew that Sony could not wait two more years to release their console. They also knew that if they could force Sony to launch early then the manufacturing costs of BR would force Sony to sell at a much higher price than they would like. I also believe that it reason why the PS3 did not have a large selection of games for the first part of 07' because the orignal plan was to release the PS3 in the fall of 07'. That would also explain why Sony's marketing and PR machine has been so confusing so far this year because they've been hogtied by the price. With the costs of BR coming down and large number of exclusives we are finally seeing what Sony wanted to do from the very beginning.

Just my two cents or maybe a quarter by now.
BTW I do not own a PS3 yet, but have owned my 360 since launch but after two RROD's I'm Done!

As solely a 360 owner, this is great news. I had eventually planned on getting a PS3 once the price was right and vibration was implemented in the controller (I KNEW it would happen). If this is true...then the time to buy is this fall!

Having the PS3 at $399...it's pretty much a no brainer. You throw in a BluRay edition of Spiderman 3, free online, wi-fi, HDMI 1.3, 7.1 surround sound, etc and this is the deal of the fall. 360 and Wii owners have to be naive to not recognize the deal that the PS3 is.

I will finally be able to own a PS3 and play the games I've been reading the PS3 owners talk about (Resistance, Heavenly Sword, etc) and the ones that have potential to be great (Ratchet, Haze, UT3, Uncharted etc).

My brother just bought an HDTV and now is begging his wife for a PS3. Of course she's telling me to shut up about it since they just spent a small fortune on the new TV HAHAHA!!

Anyways, It's only a matter of time before she caves. I told them to hold off a bit since it looks like the $399 model will be released very soon.

You know if you have a PS3 whether 20, 40, or 60gb you can upgrade the hard drive seriously.
So if you want the extra space buy the next level up for a $100 more. Trust me I have a 60gb and I barely used 30gb even with all of the things I bought off of PSN. It's a bargain I would take it if I were you.

40GB is not enough for me though... i had a 60gb in my PS3, that i bought for 600, and i had only 5GB left(i put on alot of movies and crap =D) so i ordered a seagate 250gb 2.5" SATA hard drive on newegg.com for 70 bucks, on sale =D ...i couldnt be happier with my PS3... that uis until i run out of space.. Also, external hard drives and USB HUB's work great with PS3 =D

This is what Sony should've done all along. As a company, you have to listen to your consumers. The collective gasp when they announced the PS3 price point at E3 should've told them that it would be too high for the average consumer.

Microsoft finally listened to the consumer when they announced a 3 year warranty, returned repair money, and new heatsinks for inside the 360. They are reaping the rewards judging by sales.

I think Sony will reap the rewards as well by finally offering a cheaper console.
