360 sales double PS3 in US

The Nintendo Wii was the best-selling console in North America last month, while the Xbox 360 outsold PlayStation 3 by more than 2 to 1.

According to analysts the NPD Group, 403,600 Wii units were shifted during August. The figure for DS stood at 383,300. In third place was Xbox 360 after a $50 price cut boosted sales to 276,700

Unfortunately, I don't see anything in the PS3s 2 month future that will make its numbers much better.
In two months, the Xbox360 will be in full HALO mode, and consoles WILL be moving.
I say this because I know of at least 3 people that were "waiting for Halo 3" before buying an Xbox360 becuase they've been playing Halo 2 on XBOX LIVE since it was released.

Both sides have had numerous developers and publishers speak out in favor of one consoles performance/strength/whatever over the other. Most importantly, is that I have fun on both, and I do. Being a fanboy is nothing short of stupid. I own and like both. I only wish I didn't have to keep sending my 360 back. So when someone says inferior hardware on the PS3, I have to scoff a little bit, regardless of what inference they are making.

"My excuse" to not purchase a PS3 is plain and simple. It is a very expensive piece of hardware, with little or no justification to backup the price. You guys can keep telling yourselves "The power hasn't been unlocked yet! The good games aren't out just yet! It's cheaper now, so that extra $100 I save... well, can't be spent on any games... but I can buy groceries now!"

It's starting to be pretty clear who is the winner of the next gen race. The 360 outsells the ps3 worldwide pretty consistently. Currently the ps3 hasn't shown much progress in the gaming front. Lair was a complete failure, Heavenly Sword averaged a decent 81%, Warhawk is having nonstop problems online and looks like Sony is charging to play the GT demo. Nothing but bad news from the sony side. While the 360 continuously does what it does best and that is releasing top notch games. Recent releases Forza 2 and Bioshock average 90% and up. Halo 3, Mass Effect, and PGR4 will continue the pattern.

Its just too early to say which systems have won (well wii is pwning atm). Xbox360 has been on the market longer than ps3 and cause of that it has a quite good base of users. Due to that it has 33% to get ring of death. But still xbox360 has a better library of games and internet services.
Yet ps3 hasnt even gotten to the start just yet. Even xbox360 had problems on the start and it has never sold good in japan (maybe it will start to sell in japan after ninja gaiden2 and lost odyssey is released).
Ps3 just got its first true online game (warhawk) and its having now its first series of exclusives after of its reliece. Theres still loads of good games coming in 08 and 09. Plus the multiplatform games are getting closer and closer to look and work as good on the both systems (excample graw2). Ps3 versions just got some delays.
X0 will have a great month due to last months bioshock and now halo3.

Leaving aside PS3 sales, Xbox 360 sales aren't that great either. Despite a price drop and a host of heavily hyped games here or around the corner, the 360 can't outsell a similarly priced machine with a poorer game line-up (except Metroid Prime and Zelda) and inferior technical specifications.

It's looking more and more like the Xbox 360 is going to be a console for hardcore gamers, peaking with an installed base of 25 million and never really reaching the mainstream. In fact, I'd say this is one train that is already starting to lose steam.

Honestly, it will be very difficult for the 360 to maintain sales against the PS3 as time passes and I suppose Sony already knows this and is why they tend to be a bit arrogant.

Unless MS starts buying up many games that are in the PS2's library they will be outshined in the years to come. For instance, 2008 you already know that MGS4, FF, and Gran Turismo are coming out. What does MS have to combat those games?

The PS3 has GOW3 after MGS4, FF13, and Gran Turismo. They also have several games in their library that appeal to a wide variety of people. Those games move right up to the PS3 as familiar game titles.

They both have a tough rode but the PS3 has the 100million people that are already used to it's games, controller, and name. That's a nice Ace to have up your sleeve.

Regardless of the RR issue with the Xbox 360, which is the only thing wrong with the console so far, that will eventually disappear and more consumers will purchase the console that have been waiting or scared of the reliability.

Any way you twist it. MS is still the Underdawg and has much less expectations than Seasoned Veteran Sony. To say it's ok a console sells without games is useless, this is Sony we are talking about that has like 80% market-share the past 6 years or so. It won't be like that this gen, get used to it. With the 360s sales beating the PS3s by such a large margin and with the 360s sales only to improve throughout the holiday season, no one can argue that the 360 is in the better position for 2007 and by the end of the holidays it will sell more consoles than the PS3.

Some people say 'just wait till 2008' or 'just wait for 2 months', but by then it might be too late, because it will be extremely hard for the PS3 to gain marketshare against the 360 and Wii, which are already well ahead of the PS3 and the PS3 simply isn't catching up, which means it is in real trouble unless they can do something to turn things around and capture marketshare from Microsoft and Nintendo.

I own both and it’s pretty clear the MS Fanboys have forgotten how DRY the release schedule for 360 was the first year. Forget sales numbers right now. Of course 360 will be picking up some steam with the price drop, a good 2nd year game line-up and Halo 3. It’s expected to sell a few more going into this season with some big games being released. Give SONY time to get into it’s 2nd year and get some of IT’S big titles on the ’08 release calendar and the numbers may start to even out. I’m not saying SONY will blow MS out of the water at all. It should not be a surprise to everyone about the 360 sales in August. It should not be a surprise when the September sales are out. The 360 will push above 325,000 units next month and the PS3 will be at around 200,000. I'd call it a win if it pushes more than 225,000.

I believe Sony is expecting these numbers given that the machine is still at a $500 price-point. If the 360 outsells PS3 3-to-1 in September and October, expect a price drop in November ala iPhone.

I hate to see how badly XBOX 360 beats the PS3 in Sept. It *might* be a 3-to-1 ratio of 360 to PS3 with Halo 3 comming out. It will also be interesting to see how big of a boost 360 will get in Europe with the recent price cut. With the lack of quality games comming the year, PS3 need to drop $100 ASP.

The probability that those 120 million PS2 customers will buy a PS3 is high though. They are already used to the PS3 controller for the games they like. They aren't forced to change and learn a new controller, most of the games they like will be polished up on the PS3 so they get renewed pleasure.

It's not a lock but the possibility is increased.

Got to give props to the 360 for doing as well as they have this gen. It is surprising considering what happened between the PS2 and Xbox. Give credit where credit is due.

Also, I have to put in my opinion that I disapprove of the 360s "If you wait, well release a BETTER system, and sell it for LESS" policy, and believe the hurt 360 sales. Actually, a lot of people with that mentality are probably picking up their 360 about now for the amazing Halo 3. I've never owned a XBox but I'm tempted to get one for that game. The online game recording sounds soo cool.

Seriously, this has all been said and done before. When the N64 was released nearly a year and a half before the PS1 the Nintendo crowd screamed that the system would never be able to compete against it. PS1 was lagging until FF7 came out and then BAM! th rest is history.

Lets skip ahead to the PS2 era. The Dreamcast was released a full 16 months before the PS2. In terms of technical prowess the DC was a more powerful machine and, in terms of sales, was perceived to be untouchable. In the end it turned out to be Sega's swan song and was eventually put to rest. As for the PS1 and PS2 pricing, both were considered "overpriced" within the first year of their release and neither saw very successful sales within the first 13 months of their cycle. However, support for the new format (DVD) at the time and keeping things in check with backwards compatibility (Sony IS more BC than the 360. Even without the Emotion Engine their emulation is rapidly closing the gap in the number of titles not playable on the PS3) while promising killer applications (didn't arrive until after Sony went through an entire fiscal year) the PS1 and PS2 finally came out on top.

Besides, the PS2 is going to be given the shiny, and new, price tag of the coveted $99 tag, so expect those sales to increase A LOT. In the end, Sony has just been following their same sales program they built around the PS1, and have now begun to close their own gap in terms of production loss with the PS3. Sure, they had a lackluster beginning and the $600 tag was the biggest issue, but so did their past systems. I remember when I first bought my PS2 widebody. Another customer at the counter asked me why I was "wasting my money" on some over-priced piece of plastic. He then went on a rant about how awesome the Dreamcast was (I already had one and I admitted to him that it WAS awesome, but that it was not going to last against the PS2) and that I should reconsider.

Well, 7 years later and I still play my PS2 (and PS3) while my old Dreamcast just sits there waiting to go another round with me with some Zombie Revenge and Skies of Arcadia (Yes, I have that game and NO I wont ever EVER sell it). I've studied the economics and I've seen the writing on the wall. The 360 is a seducing product that will offer nothing past 2007. Why? because it has based itself around a singular product: Halo. It has created a monster that which cannot ever be satisfied and after the Halo 3 craze ends so will the luster of the 360. Sure, you'll get NG2 and Lost Odyssey but will those generate sales? Will Mass Effect ever rise to Halo standards? The obvious answer is a loud and resounding "NO". Why? Because there is no life after Halo.

Whereas Sony has not created a singular app to base their platform. It is a system that dishes out the sales equally among developers and no single app sucks the wind out of every other game they create. Sure, they have games that generate more hype, but none of them are considered to be a "flagship" game. The closest they had was Kratos and even that game was hyped enough to call it a hit but it wasnt designed to over-shadow every other game on the system. Halo doesn't just exist on the 360...it consumes it. It IS the 360 and once the series ends so will the base.

A long and overly drawn out post. However, for the most part I believe that I am fairly accurate in my observation and I know that my technical and economic facts are set, by history, in stone.

That the PS3 will pass the 360 in 08. It isn't going to happen. Mathematically the numbers don't lie. We know MS is going to have a strong 4th Q due to Halo and other titles. At best I would suspect a "tie" between the PS3 and the 360 through the end of this year. The PS3, on a worldwide basis, is about 6.3 million units behind the 360. That would mean the PS3 would need to sell 500K units MORE than the 360 on a monthly basis to catch the 360 in 13 months or end of January 2009. I don't think the 360 is going to be dropping below 250K units/month on average any time soon which means the PS3 has to pull off 750K units per month to catch the 360 in the timeframe above. The current price structure for both consoles isn't going to allow this to happen.

Of course, Sony could wake up and smell the coffee (numbers) and take a massive hit on the hardware to get that number rolling. To get those kinds of numbers consistently I suspect it will take a $299 price point which I highly doubt is in the cards any time soon.

Whichever side of the fanboy argument you are on, Sony is looking at this from a much longer point of view than the rabid fans who somehow think the numbers are going to suddenly change. The numbers are reality... Optimism and Fanboyism won't change them...

It was only recently that the 360 rose back above the 250k mark as far as monthly sales. A Halo 3 release and a price cut did that for ya, but then again a simple $100 price cut rose the PS3 from an embarassing 70-80k per month to a much more impressive 180-200k per month. In fact, this past week alone saw about 53,000 units leave the shelves in America.

Also, the 10 million units that the 360 has sold was reached almost TWO YEARS after the console was launched. The PS3 has only been out for 10 months and trying to overcome that gap in a years time would be insane. They may not even be able to pass the 360 in 2008, but they will surely close the gap by leaps and bounds as the greater apps come out. Also, lets not forget that Sony isn't even losing money on their console. The PS3 is expected to turn a profit by early 2008 while they continue to make money from the PS2. the Xbox and Xbox 360 has yet to turn a positive dollar for Microsoft and with all the money they continue to thrown IN to it they have yet to make it a positive product.

It's not just about numbers and as a business perspective it hasn't ever been. With constant repair costs and defective production on the 360's part they have even further widened the gap on profitable production. It's because of this profit point that stands to reason why the system isnt a flop and wont be abandoned. Sure, the 360 has some good stuff coming out but if Microsoft cant make the system (despite the numbers) turn a profit how long until they eventually stop supporting it? If the PS3 begins turning a profit (even with lower overall sales numbers at first) it is still making money and therefore will always be open to improvement and further cash being divided out to developers for more and better products.

Besides KN, your also basing your assumption on the idea that 360 sales will always stay where they are at. As I previously posted before Halo 3 will drastically increase sales but what about the long run after that? There might be Halo spin-offs like Halo Wars but the trilogy ENDS there. No more "Finish the Fight" or stuff like that. Thats it, ended, and done for.

As for the money thats been thrown around by Microsoft? Their advertising campaign, so far, has cost them an estimated 250million dollars. Their projected sales for Halo 3 DONT EVEN COVER THE ADVERTISING. You can only funnel the money so much into a single product until you just dont have anything left to give.

Thoughtful response and I see you agree with my "not a chance to catch it" in 2008. I do want to point out that I am "averaging" 360 sales at 250K/month over the course of a year. Given the number of consoles Microsoft moved in Nov/Dec of last year, I don't think 250K/month, on average, is unrealistic. It is, if anything, quite low.

As far as implying that Sony is in any better position financially in respect to the ability to lower the price of the console, I have to respectfully disagree. Remember, MS took the $1B hit all at once last fiscal year. It is estimated that the 360 is profitable at this point and with the falcon units arriving, their yield will improve and costs will come down. The same is true for sony but sony needs to get the Blu-ray cost down even further. I haven't seen a recent cost breakdown analysis, but I highly doubt the PS3 is "in the black" at a $499 price point. The 80Gig MAY be close at $599 but that price is too high and MUST come down to compete. Everyone seems to believe the cost of the blu-ray drive has come way down to the point it isn't adding significant price to the console. This just isn't true because if it WAS, the stand alone players would be cheaper than they are at the moment... Yeah, blu-ray prices have come down, but they are nowhere near DVD9 -- not even close. Make no mistake -- the PS3 is currently not going to be price competitive with the 360 (notice I said price and not feature competitive) any time soon unless Sony wan't to take huge losses to close the gap.

As far as Halo 3 not making any money, ultimately, for MS -- that's crazy to believe. Yes, they have spent a lot of money advertising and marketing. They have also signed a bunch of licensing agreements with companies like mountain dew, 7-eleven, and so on. There was probably a good bit of money changing hands (in Microsoft's direction) on these. Regardless, expect that Halo 3 will sell at least 4-5 million units within 6-9 months and you are looking at quite a bit of cash for MS. According to Joystiq/Forbes, the publisher gets about $1/copy and the License fee is about $7. If there is any in game advertising in the manual or game box, Forbes says to make that $1 $3... That's $8-11 bucks a copy or $32-40 on the low end and $44-55 on the high end in PROFIT. I think it is safe to assume there will be advertising in the Box, don't you? They'll make some money on the game -- count on it. Granted it won't dig them out of their huge hole of past losses, but it does move them forward, install more hardware, increase sales of other games (more license income) and such.

They’re not even in the lead anymore, and Sony’s been outselling them in worldwide sales for quite a while up until August. This reminds me of those "My dad can beat up your dad" days. It seems to me that BOTH consoles must have S**T games. Otherwise you'd be playing them instead of arguing which console is better or who is selling more.

I believe in ps3. It hasnt been out a year yet. The titles that have come within one year have been great, there is loads more coming, and nothing to worry about. It isnt about losing snap, ps3 is doing as well as ps2 did in the same time frame. Remember, 360 had a year with no competition and the wii has already overtaken it. Last time I looked, (although to be honest I dont take much notice of sales figures because they can all be spun), ps3 had sold around what 4 mil? wii had sold around 10 mil, and 360 around 8-9 mil. Now, most people with 360's i know and also it seems, most people on here have had, at least two 360's. So, say the real figure of 360 owners is maybe 7 mil. At the current rate of sales (which bear in mind, for ages the ps3 apparently had nothing to play), when ps3 has been out 2 years like the 360, it would be on about 8 mil. That is more than the 360 would of had in two years AND, that is competing against 360 and wii, and having no games, sub par online and all the other crap you xbox fanboys drivel on about.
