PS3 Wins Award For High Definition Design Flair

Sony HD technological innovation has been recognised by the European Imaging and Sound
Association (EISA) with the PS3 winning the European Media Centre category.

"Sony's PS3 is a wonderful example of a powerful media centre, thanks to its inclusion of an audio-video-photo player as well as a web browser to navigate, download, play and chat on the Internet," the judging panel said. "In addition there's a 60GB hard disk for content storage, plus Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and four USB interfaces allowing connection of external hard-disk storage and USB accessories such as keyboards.

"However, the most important function of the PS3 is the built-in Blu-ray disc player, which also reads DVD, CD and Super Audio CD, as well as embracing the new surround sound formats. Top-notch 1080/24p resolution is available from Bluray Discs via a HDMI Ver.1.3 interface with x.v.Color; better still, the PS3 up-converts any DVD movie to 1080p resolution and it accommodates users who prefer to use a traditional remote control - one's available as an option. Last but not least, PS3 is of course a very advanced game console and a worthy heir to the grand PlayStation heritage."

I have the 46' Sharp Aquos and it is absolutely gorgeous! I spent well over $2,000 but I have yet to question my investment. My livingroom almost looks like some sort of shrine now with my beautiful Aquos in the center. That's how livingrooms are supposed to be right?

Dude seriously I saw the 62" 1080p Aquos at Costco playing clips in 1080p from Blu-Ray movies. Let's just say I am glad I didn't have my credit card on me, because that beautiful bastard had me in some kind of Sharp brand fanboy hypnosis. I just wanna go back and watch it. I would get a PS3 to watch Blu Ray if I had a TV that nice.

My 30" 1080i CRT HDTV, Just doesn't justify a HD player yet my upconverting player looks good enough not to start my collection over yet. But that Sharp Aquos is something special.

no samsungs DLP isnt as good as Sony's Bravia. its the way it renders it. go to a best buy and compare 2 tv's a bravia and a samsung DLP, and u'll notice the difference.

anyway, i have a 40" 720p LCD Samsung, and i absolutely *LOVE it.

what's even nicer about it (or maybe ironic), is the PS3's design matches my Samsung more than it would have if i had gone with the Sony! (the Samsung has the same shiny black finish as the PS3, whereas the Sony set i was eyeing was that glass/clear finish).

i can't imagine how i ever gamed and watched movies on my old 19" SDTV. it seems like a lifetime ago, even though i've only owned my HDTV since early June (so about 2 1/2 months).

definitely need to be advertised. I didn't really notice much of a difference on my DVDs until I turned the noise and block reduction back to zero...then I realized how powerful its upscaling and refinement features were. Not a substitute for true HD quality, but it still makes them look damn good.

Why give an award to a system that cannot upscale its own GAMES to 1080. For the many people out there ( http://boardsus.playstation... that have to deal with 480p games, this is ridiculous. I think it is bullshi@ to give an award to a company that promised to fix this issue back in December of 06 then came back and said that it would not be possible to fix because they cannot dedicate part of the cell to upscale. This issue affects many people that have a TV that does not support 720p. The PS3 downgrades the games to 480p. The 360 has a upscaling chip called anna which upscales all of my games to 1080i beautifully. I downloaded the HS demo and loved it but it looked bad because it was in 480p. Award my ass.

that's because those 1080i-only tvs are OLD, 1ST GEN HDTVs

the reason why 360 does game upscaling is because of it's scaling-chip, PS3 uses cell for scaling(of DVD movies), wich is in use already when playing a game:)

Rainbow Six Vegas does use an upscaling function for people who own an old HDTV:)

That's all good for us PS3 owners,and as far as audio/visual innovation it desrves it rightly so.But this is the kind of praise I want to see when it comes to making games.True it's only the PS3's first year, and the technology is new,but how long will this continue to be a viable excuse for the PS3's underperformance.DMC4 is a PS game, and I'm hearing that it's looking better on the opposing system.This is getting to be ridiculous day by day.Can someone more knowledeable of the ins and outs of tech explain this enigma to me,as I am ignorant of such things.This is beginning to get frustrating to here the taunts made by the owners of 360's about the lack of AAA titles made for the PS3.Lair,HS,and Warhawk all pale in comparison to the hype and expectations that everyone had for them,including me.

i have to say that the fault lies entirely in the media, and even yourself a bit, for falling for the hype.

the truth is, things get *HYPED too much, and when they fail to deliver on the hype even one iota, they get trashed for it.

for example. Fable was hyped to no end my Lionhead, MS, and everybody else. i bought into that hype, and bought an X Box *JUST to play Fable.

the game didn't come *CLOSE to living up to the hype. i was *FURIOUS in that i bought an entire *GAMING CONSOLE for this one experience, and it let me down. i didn't touch the game for nearly a year afterwards.

well, my fiance decided to start playing it about 3 years ago, when we first got together, and as i watched her play, i realized that the game wasn't as terrible as i thought it was, and my expectations were just too high back then. i replayed the game again, and i enjoy it immensely. while it hasn't suddenly gotten all of the hyped features back, i can appreciate the game for what it was, and it's at the least,a solid 8.

now, on the other foot, friends of mine were creaming their pants over how awesome Ninja Gaiden was. i was new to the X Box scene after buying Fable, so i listened to them and picked it up. well, the game certainly has some cool stuff going on, but it's marred, for me personally, by it's extreme difficulty. i knew the game was going to be hard, but i didn't realize *HOW hard. i play games to have *FUN, not to break my controllers.

i even tried Ninja Gaiden Sigma on my PS3, to give it another chance. while i certainly did much better this time around, the game still isn't "fun" to me. it's too hard and frustrating, and not worth the strain. in short, the game just isn't for *ME.

point is; hype is hype. it's *DESIGNED to make you think something is better than what it is. sometimes a game exceeds it's hype (Bioshock), but most of the time the hype doesn't do it a lick of good (Halo 2, Killzone), despite what could be a quality game underneath.

with Heavenly Sword, people were expecting too much out of it.

considering that it's the very first year of the Playstation 3's life, i *NEVER expected 100% 10's across the board. even games i'm just ecstatic about like Uncharted, Ratchet, Heavenly Sword, etc, i don't expect to be floored by them. entertained? yes. good time all around? yes. the most amazing, fantabulous experience ever crafted by man? no. simply a fun game.

the ign uk guy was overly harsh with his review, in my opinion, but i think it's solely due to the fact that i believe he is expecting the PS3, out of the gate, year one, to deliver above and beyond the call of duty in terms of software. and that, i think, is too much pressure to put on the developers that are toiling away 8-16 hours a day just trying to figure out how to get the damn code to *RUN properly on this complicated, frankly amazing machine.

my advice is to simply temper your expectations more. don't buy into the hype.

i've been burned too many times to take what PR and the media say at face value.

if they say they think this game is going to "revolutionize the genre" and be a ">insert hot title here< killer," they're instantly in my own mental "spam" folder, and ignored. if a game has my interest, well, that's enough for me. i don't need people that are getting paid to tell me how amazing it is, to tell me how amazing it is. i'll discover that either through a rental (Odin Sphere, on average, has pretty moderate reviews, ie, 7/10. i *LOVE that game), or through taking a risk and purchasing it outright and finding out for myself.

ignore PR from publishers, developers, and even the media. these people are *NOT you, they are *NOT me, and they can't speak for all of us, whether for good or ill. even mass opinion shouldn't always be counted on.

hell, just about everybody i know thinks Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is one of the best movies ever made. i thought is was stomach-churningly awful, and i *LOVED the first Pirates movie.

it's widely percieved that the PSP/PS3 has no games, and the 360 is just a "shooter fans" console. these are all untrue.

the opinion of the media and the masses mean *NOTHING to me, and they should mean nothing to *YOU.

what *WE think, personally, is the important thing.

remember; *IGNORE hype, no matter how tempting it is to believe it (they do their jobs well, really). it's just going to set you up for disappointment.

yeah, i've been burned by the PR machine too much over my years of gaming (going strong since 1986!), so i've learned to get whatever information i can out of reviews (ie, game plot, gameplay mechanics, anything else informative) from PR and developers, but ignore all the hyperbole.

At last, the games are finally coming, although I will admit it has been a waiting game up until now. I predict the PS3 to destory the 360 in 2008 and become the king of the living room!
