PS3 11k behind Xbox 360 in US Sales Charts from VGchartz

The week ending August 11, 2007 saw two significant events in the Americas. Starting August 8, the Xbox 360 price drop went into effect for all three Xbox 360 SKUs. Additionally, Sony's new $600 PS3 – with extra storage and Motorstorm – began to become widely available at retail. That said - Xbox 360 sales were above PS3 sales this week since the 60 gig PS3 dropped to $500. Wii, DS, PSP, and PS2 continue selling well this week too – largely in their usual ranges.

-Although Boogie bombed, it was enough to push EA past Activision this week. Both trailed Nintendo though in weekly software sales.
-Software notes: Guitar Hero II has returned to being the top selling Xbox 360 title. Wii Play has overtaken Twilight Princess as Wii's best selling title in the Americas.
-Motorstorm games sold with the new SKU are included in the software total. That means the new SKU sold fewer than 10,000 units this week. It is not likely to be widely available until next week.
-Pokemon Diamond/Pearl will hit 3.5 million units in the Americas next week.

With those 3 big titles coming in the first weeks of sept, i would expect

Actually you are wrong Zhuk, in fact my early PS3 purchase is completely due to Heavenly Sword. A game with 10 GB+ of sound will without a doubt redefine the gaming experience. I was going to wait for the "console killers" Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Killzone, Socom, Little Big Planet, etc. to buy my PS3, but with the solid line up starting now well into 2008 already confirmed, why wait?

It isn't like there is a chance of the PS3 breaking.

PS3 actually had their sales increased by 7%, very surprising tbh considering how expensive it is. X360 50% increase is probably quite alright but I bet it'll go a bit higher when they release Falcon chipset (65nm), I know thats what my brother is waiting for.

A lot of people were waiting on the PS3 price to drop. No surprise the sales temporarily spiked so much higher.

Reliability is a much bigger sales issue for the 360 than price. A lot of people are waiting for the new chipset. The 360 price drop didn't mean nearly as much as the new 65 micron chipset will. The combination of the new, reliable, cool running hardware, superior Madden and Halo 3 will make the Christmas season a real blockbuster for the 360.

The console with the most users is the one that the best software will be developed for (not to mention the far, far, far superior software development platform and XBL luring in 3rd party developers). Right now there are three 360's for every PS3 worldwide. Except for a short period after the PS3 "price drop" the 360 has consistantly outsold the PS3, so the gap is only getting bigger.

This is worth repeating: "the gap is only getting bigger". If you were a software developer - rather than a fanboy - which console would you be more interested in investing your millions of dollars into?

It says a lot that even with a serious kick to the nuts like the RROD, the 360 still outsells the much-hyped PS3. Game library is what sells consoles.

Lets see; I can wait 'til July 2008(or later) to play GT5 on the PS3 or play Forza 2 right now on my 360...

Think I'll go play Dirt instead. Or maybe the Bioshock demo.

I just did the math. If ps3 outsells xbox360 by 28k a week it will take 48 years for ps3 to close the gap with the 360. the math is based on a 7 million unit lead by the xbox currently. 7,000,000 divided by 28k = 2500 weeks, divided by 52(weeks) = 48 years. Even if the 360 was only 3.5 million ahead we are still looking at 24 years. The point of this is ps3 needs to do better.

The 360 price-cut has not had a big effect but there are 3 SKU's out there, Plus, the whole waiting for the "falcon" chip issue or "waiting for the fixed consoles" put a damper on MS forcast.

Of course the PS3 outsold Xbox 360 for like a month while the 360 was beating the PS3 by a lot more, when it was outselling it. Not a measly 10k a week.(it was murder)

With the games coming out(bioshock, mass effect, halo..etc), Xmas around the corner, and falcon chips coming out, for people on the RROD fence, I think, the 360 has the potential to sell a lot this fall.

This should be interesting... also it will be a year for the PS3 soon, we'll see where it stacks up in DEC, hopefully no excuses..Ha

And second, I'm just saying that Bioshock does appear to be a system seller. Excellent reviews, amazing graphics... come on now. My friend thinks so, and if you read some comments here, even PS3-only enthusiasts think it looks awesome. Yeah, it also appears on PC. But I know I wouldn't spend $1,000+ to play a game I could have played on a $300 system. You can if you want, But why do that when at the same price you could get a 360, extra controller, Bioshock, Halo 3, and Mass effect? In case you think anyone does want to upgrade/buy a PC for Bio, than you proved me right. A system seller sells systems, 360 or PC. Period.

What it means is, the PS3 Console, is selling based on NON-GAME RELATED functions first and foremost. I mean not much games or that much demos, so yeah the Hard-cores are still buying the console, which is good but that is expected. Most casuals don't buy a console because of future promises and potentials. I think Price and Games play a bigger factor to casuals. Of course there is always exceptions.

Madden- I have not talked to you in a while, but what are you gonna do about the PS3 Madden dilema? I know you love you rPS3 and Madden. With everyone boycotting the 360 and madden this year, maybe it is a good thing for the 2K football series. Maybe they will get that game and wait till next year. This helps 2K all pro football out. Jump in Bro, jump in, we all know it's better than Madden..hehe

As far as all the AAA games and demos, et al for the 360 I've got the same coming to the PS3. COD4, Drake's, R&CF:TOD, HS, etc....... will be great. My interest is renewed in Haze, and as you said the applications and other things for the PS3 like Echochrome, HOME, LBP, Pain, etc. I'm going to be tinkering around with HOME for days and days and days so that will be a great distraction for me and a really cool social site for the PSN.

As far as really doing anything else for my Madden fix, I still have 2006 even though EA decided to assassinate the servers (idiots) and I love the feel of that game although I think the Giants are a little too overrated on that game as was Brandon Jacobs on 2007. Those were jabs at my best friend's team -- he'll love that!lol

I've said it all along and I'll say it again - the PS3 will win this console war and the silent ocean of PS2 owners will purchase their new PS3's over the next couple of years bringing the installed bases way closer in line to reality, relatively speaking. Of course this is my opinion and basically an educated guess.

The 360 will continue to sell well for a time, but I think MS is really going to have to work magic in order to capture and reatain the attention of the world's gaming masses going into 2008, 2009. The Wii has got that down pat right now and regardless of how much it sells Nintendo WILL eventually have to bring out a new system which will completely kill the momentum it's built from the latest model. Ithink the Wii will continue to do well into X-mas of next year and then things will start to get interesting, especially if the 3rd party games are offering far and few between titles worth mentioning.

SNE's system is built for the long journey and will be in position to surge upwards while the competitors are at the rawing board for new hardware designs.

We'll see if that lasts. It's only 11k more, but with a lower price. I am predicting, that'll be down below by next week again. BTW: Next week is the week the Wii will pass the 360 in total sales.
Still, the rest of the year will see a head to head between 360 and PS3. The $499 price will last until end of the year (or close), but the strong fall line up will help selling PS3. OTHO, Halo and Bioshock plus the price cut (and maybe the new falcon) will save the day for the 360. Eventually, the PS3 with a second wave of games and another price drop in spring will surpass the 360 in 2008.

BTW: I am curious what the global numbers will do. I'd predict the 7%+ for the PS3 will move it above 100K again, while the 360 with the +40% will reach around 75-80K.

Nothing is for certain. And I predict with a stable amount of great games and the new falcon hardware. Which will make the defect ratio plummet.

Sure, nothing is for certain. But I still believe there are about 120Mio PS2 users out there. I tend to believe they haven't decided to upgrade yet, and I tend to believe, the majority will choose a PS3 (or a Wii). With a higher saturation of HD TVs, and HD media (TV and disk) content reaching a critical level by next year (and probably lower prices - but hopefully a stable economy) will open the markets much wider then 2007. That said, the price difference won't be that much of an issue (yes, because of the integrated BD player - this is a huge bonus), and say, a $399 PS3 price point will simply break the barrier. At that time the game shelfs will be equal between 360 and PS3 games (and Wii game, BTW). The price per value will go up with the PS3, even a fixed 360 can't keep up, eventually.
You know, for MS, it would have been so easy. Instead of this stupid HD DVD, they could simply have put a BD in. Even for the same price, they would have had the same strong line up they are having right now, but taken out the biggest argument for the PS3. (well - except BD wasn't ready a year ago, oops that 2 years almost now).

Yes, I said, the 360 won't keep up. Simply because I believe the PS3 has the overall more complete package. This could change if MS would bring a complete revamped 360 (incl. powerbrick and HD DVD (or BD) build into a small std case). I personally believe, the PS3 has more under the hood. But that doesn't mean the 360 can't improve more. It's hard to say what in the current PS3 lineup is first generation but still is based on multi core programming experience gained in the first 2 years of 360 development (which we should not forget, the situation was completely different for the 360 early games - almost nothing was multi cpu/core). So, I'd say, and expect, the PS3 first generation lineup would be better then the 360 first generation lineup (which it is, no doubt - I think people can agree to that). We'll see, if KZ2 and other middle 2008 second generation titles can prove to have an edge on the technology front. At the same time 360 titles will improve as well.
But if they do, and keeping a price difference of, say <= $100, but incl. BD (and the other features), I think that will guarantee Sony a stable market share. I still believe, MS's share will be more equal then the pre-generation. (if they would start making profit - for a change!).
It will be interesting to see how the Wii will fit into the whole picture. It will still be strong in 2008, and maybe even 2009, but it will drop sharp when the switch to HD will have taken place (say until 2010/11).
So, well, its not so much being loyal to Sony, it wouldn't matter if I would really believe, MS would have the better product. I'd probably switch. I would even consider a 360 right now (and I probably will; Masseffect, GeOW ?), but I don't really need it, and I have a PS3 already (there are some other reasons like family and such which don't really justify another console). But this is my personal opinion. I have, maybe, some bias against MS (again, that's just my personal opinion), but I can accept a good product. To convince me, however, the 360 would have to blow the PS3 away - which it can't (again, for what I'd want, which, however, it might be sufficient for a lot of gamers out there).

Halo will move some systems, but not as many as so many think, because the people who want Halo 3 probably mostly have a 360 already. Well 360 sales had been dwindling. I believe it was either as a result of the rumored price drop or RROD or maybe a combination of both. The sales increase however dosent seem to have lasted very long judging from amazon sales data. I am not saying amazon sales data is reliable but it does provide a rough estimate using a limited sample. Ps3 sales are at least stable at 40,000 no more 17,000 sales thats what i am happy about.

If Microsoft could make a reliable system than I believe they would have a much bigger lead and be able to maintain it. My xbox 360 died again on Sat. (I am still waiting for the coffin- this is my 3rd time sending in a 360 since launch) and whenever I get a chance I'll spread the word how poorly designed the rushed 360 really is... there are many people out there with nothing good to say about the reliability of the 360- this is horrible PR for Microsoft- I am really surprised that people are still buying the 360 with these issues still unresolved. Customer service is stil broken- at least when my lauch day 360 died 30 days later, it only took 1 day to get the coffin- now I am waiting 5 days just to get the coffin.

I really see the PS3 eventually becoming number one- (I bought a PS1 on launch day, but did not buy a PS2 - went with an xbox, now I am eventually going back to a Sony product)...

A true gamer likes when all the consoles perform well- so for me I really don't care who wins- I just would like Microsoft to get their act together because I invested a lot of money in them and right now have nothing to show for it except for an HD DVD drive that is worthless without a working 360.

When you first see it posted it looks like the PS3 is only 11k total units behind the 360 but when you read the whole article at the end they mention that there's been a total of 12,666,310 next gen systems sold in the US with the 360 accounting for 52.9% of that number, the wii's at 32.8% and the PS3's at a painfully low 14.3%. translation: the 360 has only sold to a little less than *HALF of it's potential audience.

upcoming PS3 titles are catering to not only the established 4.5 million, but the remaining 110 million PS2 owners that are *WAITING for a better price drop (at least down to $400), and the release of the franchises they love like FFXIII, MGS4, Ratchet, Jak, Sly (or whatever projects are coming from those houses like Uncharted and Infamous).

Microsoft is going to have to come with more than just three or four cool titles to lure a PS2 fan (who is used to having a *VAST library of quality of games, instead of just a handful) to the console. Halo isn't going to do it.

Microsoft has a good system, in that it's, for the most part, capable of some great stuff, but most of the games just look the same to me (i guess it's the downside of everyone and their mamma using Unreal Engine 3; even PS3 Unreal games look the same), whereas the PS3, in barely it's first year, has a great variety of quality games (Resistance, NGSigma, Motorstorm, VF5, out of the already released titles, and the titles listed before for upcoming releases), that's only *INCREASING as time goes on.

i don't truly care about sales, but i *HAVE to look at it realistically; thanks to the PS2's *MASSIVE install base, the PS3 has a larger net once the price is right, and the content is there. a fool thinks that the price will *NEVER go down, and that the games will *NEVER come.

we've *SEEN the upcoming games. we know that some of Sony's *BEST first and second party devs are working on them (ie Sony Santa Monica, Team Ico, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Sucker Punch, Japan Studio, etc).

we've *SEEN a price drop; more will follow.

there are 110 million PS2 owners just *WAITING.

since i haven't seen an amazon post up today I figured I would chime in on it..PS3 continues to stay steady with their one sku on Amazon...as does the Wii...but if you look at the 360...they have constantly had 2 sku's in the top 20 and 3 sku's in the top 50 for atleast the past two weeks and as of today they had 4 sku's in their top 100. So I suspect we will see a pretty big shift on the 360 side in total console sales if Amazon is a good gauge
of US/NA sales.

I'm so glad I decided to buy both a PS3 and Xbox 360 I feel like I have the best of both worlds. I really think if people spent less time comparing and just picking up both and enjoying each systems advantages this type of stuff wouldn't matter as much. I would actually like to see the PS3 catch up to the 360 and end in a tie! The closer they are the harder MS & Sony are pressed to innovate and improve.

Whenever I have guests over they say "OH a 360!" and then their like "DAMN and a PS3!" At my house you get the best of both worlds!

People keep talking about how their system is selling better with this price drop or this system has these games or will be getting these games and when it comes out it will be over for your system;

thats great for you and your system and all but you and when i say you i am referring to the xbox fanboys you are forgetting one may well lets say 2 major factors one japan and who ever thinks that japan doesn't matter is still sucking on their moms tit because it doesn't matter if the us has a bigger gamer base japan is still the second largest

Japan is a very important market. Last time i checked they accounted for at least 1/4 of the world wide gaming market and not only that Japan is also home to some of the major developers and publishers in the gaming industry. Any console maker will try to win this market which is why MS is doing their best to win that territory despite the cold reception they are getting.

Xbox 360 barely dropped its price, so its natural that at least the first day or week it would outsell the PS3. Holiday will be interesting.

Will the 60 GB PS3 be phased out and the 80 GB get a price drop? If you couple that with games and the holiday season, will that make it sell even better than Xbox 360?

Will Microsoft get their falcons ready to drop the price further, and will that along its holiday line-up help?

Will the Wii NOT need a price drop, and will it solve its production problems?

What will each systems line-ups do for the sales of their respective systems?

If only everyone can afford it though it would be great. I am only waiting for MS to completely fix their hardware issues and Too Human to come out before i buy a X360. There are too many games coming out of the x360 this generation that warrants a buy for me. I almost bought one but then i found out that my friends x360 had the rings which freak me out. I couldn't believe it. I thought it was just a myth but it actually did happen. The suck part is we live in the middle of the pacific ocean and its taking ages for his X360 to be fixed in Australia. Anyways when MS fix this hardware issue then i am definitely getting a X360 to compliment my PS3. Wii? i really don't know.

as anticipated the price drop of x360 worldwide wasnt enough to see it zip past ps3 in sales.

in EU ps3 outsold x360 despite the x360 price cut by 300k figures

Although i believe the original ps3 sales might be higher since this is coming from VGCHARTS
