Heavy Rain Becomes Quantic Dream's Fastest Seller

PlayStrum writes: "Heavy Rain, popular among the gaming industry for taking the road less traveled by, became an unpredictable success in the eyes of many, including David Cage himself. As the estimated numbers show, Heavy Rain managed to sell over 1,000,000 with just over a month of public exposure. Quantic Dream were taking big risks with their vision and expected (like many others) to see a low number and less-than-flattering reviews reflecting it. What resulted was much more pleasing."

Oh the wonder of advertisement....

Tony-A5127d ago

I wonder if this one was more of the "word of mouth" advertising than with ads. To be honest, I didn't see a single ad on TV for this game.

LordMarius5127d ago

yep there were no ads for this game in North America and it top on the NPD

Cold 20005127d ago

In France there were a lot of ads on the net and on TV. I was quite surprised that they were marketing it so much since I was expecting them to cater more to a niche market than the masses.

thereapersson5127d ago (Edited 5127d ago )

No matter what, this is a very unique, refreshing gaming experience. Everyone who owns a PS3 (and even those who don't) owe it to themselves to play it. Sure, people can nitpick all day about graphical inconsistencies or plot holes, but that's missing the point completely. You're just supposed to sit back and let yourself become immersed in the experience. Over-scrutinization of unnecessary aspects serve no other purpose but to detract from this immersion.

After all, don't we all wish to be completely immersed and connected with the games we play -- and the characters therein? That's the whole drive for developers when you hear the adage "games just can't be considered an art form". They're trying to break that stereotype, and for the most part, Quantic Dream has come that much closer to accomplishing such a lofty goal.

gaffyh5127d ago

I saw a few ads for Heavy Rain, but I saw a lot more for Uncharted 2. Still, I haven't even seen a single ad for God of War 3, just one competition.

Redempteur5127d ago

i think quantic dream is know from a lot of french players at least french magazines had no problem to get info from them.
Also french ( as a whole ) tend to enjoy stories based movies ( even i sometimes find them boring myself ) that might explain why there was ad for heavy rain on tv and in almost every VG magazine i read.

Indigo prochecy sold over 800k ? that's good considering it was last gen (if find it hard to not consider this a succès )
Anyway so far QD made 3 games ...3 games with potential that tried to do thing differents and that's why i'll be intrested in every project they do .i bought their games happilly.

PS: the article is wrong ..QD confirmed that they would like to do omikron 2 not that they were making it ...because you know all this time they were busy with heavy rain ( since 2005 ) and that david cage doesn't like the idea of sequels at all ....

sikbeta5127d ago

Awesome Game, It deserve all the sales and IMO David Cage redeemed Himself with this Game...

Commander TK5127d ago

Maybe I would have liked it more if I did not know who the killer was

EvilBlackCat5127d ago

Lame gameplay
Decent music score
Lame Story
Over Hyped
Great graphics
Lame voice actings

Lets say it was just one of those games that you are curious about it but you find out that you cant trust every review you read... oh and loyalists in N4G.

Redempteur5127d ago

@evilblack cat

lame voice acting ??
i thought trolls were trying harder these days ...

you can't get more realistics and precise than heavy rain acting ..
Real motion captured actor rendered in their scenes doing their voice work ...
and not just some actors ..they had hundreds of applicants from professionnal actors
the voice of heavy rain is as lame as any block buster movie ...

Bubble Buddy5127d ago

It was word of mouth for my school; in Canada. One person played it, said ow awesome and how different the game is, and it spread.

Prototype5127d ago

I'm one of those million, and proud of it!

It's a big refresh from all the FPS and TPS out there, speaking of which time to stare at digital boobs again :D

Maybe I was too immersed in the story,This is one of the most beautiful looking games this gen,the attention to detail was mind blowing, this is right up there with u2 and gow3

Well done QD don't keep us waiting for your next game, the industry needs your risk taking and creativity

Ravage275127d ago

There are stuff in the game like the black plastic trashbags that are so downright photorealistic i can't help but stare at them as i play

Christopher5127d ago

98% of the game is really well done graphics. But, there are those 2% elements that don't really stand up well. The good part is that those elements are typically in the background or are due to poor lighting in a scene.

If you're really playing the game, those graphical issues pop in one second and are gone the next and are surrounded by other elements that draw one's attention more.

My only complaint with the game is that during the various actions scenes the QTE icons can detract you from the action happening on the screen. So, I'm spending more time looking QTE cues and less time watching the action itself.

It's definitely a huge leap from Quantic Dream's first attempt, Indigo Prophecy.

Sevir045127d ago

it has some graphical inconsistencies through out. But those are negligent. the story and the over all grim noir feel of the game makes it stand with the top dogs of this gen... there isn't a game like this on any other platform, which is why i love this game, and MY PS3, Sony totally did the right thing with publishing this game. QD and DC really hit home with this, and i'm glad its sold so well.

unrealgamer585127d ago

Just asking here, But are you a girl?

I mean you always have a chick in you're profile.

mushroomwig5127d ago

That's Hannah Montana and what difference does it make if she's a girl? You're not going to be able to sleep with her.

Nicaragua5127d ago

This headline would be more impressive if Quantic Dream had released more than 3 games.

Still Heavy Rain is a great game and im glad its selling well for them.

Paying Extra For Early Access Cannot Be The Industry Norm

Charging for early access has started to become a regular practice in several AAA games, and the gaming community should not tolerate this.

CrimsonWing693h ago

Don’t uh… don’t pay for it then? 🤷‍♂️ It’s 3 days early, let people who can’t wait pony up to pay for early access. I’d hope people have more control over themselves if they don’t want to pay extra. I personally, do not see an issue with the option. If I’m hyped for a game and they give you early access, I’ll pay. If it’s something I can wait to play on “actual release” I won’t pay extra. It’s as simple as that.

Crows903h ago

Except your entirely mistaken if you think it's "early access"

Theyre just charging you extra to play it on release. So gullible.

Obscure_Observer2h ago

"Theyre just charging you extra to play it on release. So gullible."

Not really.

In some cases, paying for early access will grant you access to play those games at the same time media outlets and reviewers are playing their copies.

Besides, it´s a single player game. It´s not like early access to MP competitive games like Battlefield which EA would grant a full week early access to those willing to pay; which gives a unfair advantage to those gamers and breaks the game´s balance.

CrimsonWing691h ago

are you playing it earlier than retail release?

If that’s the correct answer, how is it not early access?

Crows903h ago

It's not early access...it's playing on release...early access is when the game isn't finished and needs a little more time...you also get it months in advance.

Let's not get confused here..

Andrew33628m ago

You get access to the game before it goes live for people who purchased the standard version of the game... thus you are getting early access.

VersusDMC3h ago

Microsoft has been doing premium edition early access for awhile(Forza and Starfield recently) ...so why is it an issue now when Ubisoft does it?

It can't be the gamepass excuse as Ubisoft has day one subscriptions as well.

Obscure_Observer2h ago

I´ve paid for Starfield´s Premium Edition to get early access to the game, plus Shattered Space expansion.

I don´t regret my decision and I mighty pay for it again to get early access to Fable and TESVI.

Andrew33627m ago

@VincentVanBro yea like the kind of idiots who worry about how adults spend their money.

gold_drake1h ago

as long as people are paying for it, it will be a thing unfortunately.

the fear of missing out is ... huge. especially online.

CrimsonWing691h ago

I don’t think it’s about missing out. Think of it like a movie you’re hyped for. You can see it early if you pay extra or just wait until Friday when it officially releases.

It’s nothing more than that.

It's A Crime That There's No Sleeping Dogs 2 Yet

Huzaifah from eXputer: "Sleeping Dogs from the early 2010s is one of the best open-world games out there but in dire need of a resurgence."

LG_Fox_Brazil1d 1h ago

I agree, I consider the first one a cult classic already

isarai19h ago

You say "yet" as if it's even possible anymore. United Front Games is gone, along with anyone that made this game what it is

CrimsonWing695h ago

That’s what happens when games sell poorly. And I’ve seen people wonder why people cry when a game sells badly… this is your answer.

solideagle4h ago

Majority of the time it's true but if a company/publisher is big (in terms of money), they can take a hit or 2. e.g. I am not worried about Rebirth sales as Square will make Remake 3 anyway but if FF 17 doesn't sell then Square might need to look for alternative. <-- my humble opinion

Abnor_Mal4h ago

Doesn’t Microsoft own the IP now since they acquired Activision?

Abnor_Mal41m ago

Oh okay, Activision owned True Crime, but when that didn’t sell as intended it was canceled. Six months later Square Enix bought the rights and changed the title to Sleeping Dogs.*

*As per Wikipedia

boing13h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Sleeping Dogs was a sleeper hit back then. It was fantastic. It actually still is. Would love a sequel to this, or at least a revive of True Crime series.
