60GB PS3 sold at Target for $499.99

It seems like the price cut has been put to effect. One of PS3 Fanboy's readers was able to purchase a 60GB PS3 for $499.99 in Target. When PS3 Fanboy contacted Target, they confirmed that their PS3 are being sold for the said price.

Because don't get me wrong, I'm not against PS3. But, really, I don't think $500 is going to cause a huge rush to PS3s.

The main problem is that the primary consumer doesn't actually know the difference between a PS3 and a 360, so to a lot of the Xbox 360 will still seem like a better deal. We have Sony's poor ad campaign to blame for that.

Second is that $500 is a lot of money, still more than most consoles ever have been. $500 didn't sell the 20GB SKU, and I don't think that 40GB extra will cause a big rush for the console.

Again, I think that the PS3 is a great deal at $600, so another $100 off is just an improvement. I also think that the standard consumer will recognize that the Wii is 1/2 as much and the 360 is $100 less, so (my estimate) is that the PS3 will lose this holiday season if Sony doesn't get another price cut in there.

So, come on Sony, do it!

HD is suppose have a big jump this holiday season and PS3 will be a steal at that price, then you have the games Uncharted, heavenly sword on display which clearly show the power and not to forget all the bad press M$ is getting about the failure rate. Trust me when I saw it on CNN I was like man, it's going to take alot to get casual customer to buy a product with a history of problems. I think if M$ was offering the same features and performance then the $100 would make a difference, but I think once consumer see that it's $100 more, they will see that it has blu ray, 60gig harddrive, wifi, bluetooth and 5 free blu ray movies, free online and don't forget it's made by sony. The PS2 vs xbox debate. The PS2 had great library of games but was less powerful while many issues, while the xbox was more powerful but had less games.

If power of a console wins a generation, how come the xbox 1 didn't take the victory when especially it did not have the failure rate that of the PS2, and was released later?

Its one thing to boast power, and i do believe the PS3 is one very powerful machine, but you have to get people to believe you. Many people probably still believe the 360 is most powerful, much like many people i knew who thought the PS2 was more powerful.

Its not like E3 is going to be a 24 or American idol show where 10s of millions of people watch it. So its going to be a lot harder to prove the PS3 when it came out later, and in result has a smaller library of games.

In order to make the PS3 do really well they really need to show stuff as much as possible.

This generation will probably be a lot more even.

Maybe they wanted to wait till after E3, but since the secret got out early, they put it into affect now, so it wouldn't stop PS3 sales of people waiting for the price drop. Who knows, just a theory but if it's true that some retailers are already selling it at $499.00

While $499 is still alot, if Sony impresses at E3, with Killzone 2 and hopefully some other surprises, it might just help PS3 hang in this year. That's about all they can hope for.

But I think they need to do a special run this holiday season and package a Blu-ray movie with every unit. Possibly Pirates 3, or Transformers? $500 is the perfect price point however since it's only $20 more than Microsoft's console. No, this won't make millions of people crowd into stores to buy one, but it will make the purchase a lot easier to swallow, especially with the power/feature advantage.

Too bad that Microsoft has to deal with such bad press during their second (and quite possibly most important) year of business. Sony's probably going to be portrayed very positively by the media, especially if their software ends up delivering at E3.

Memory card reader... Id give $10 to produce.. extra space... perhaps $15-20.. and WiFi.. $10 bucks to manufacture for the PS3. so... a $35 or so loss on the added features. I still maintain that my PS3 was one of the best purchases I have ever made. For what it does the price is a bargain. The biggest problem with the PS3 is that it's focus is diluted by the blu-ray "war." I love it that I got a blu-ray player with the PS3, but would not have shed a tear if they would have left it out of the PS3 design.

The whole "OMG the PS3 rulez cause it's got 50GB disc to use" arguement is totally and absolutely countered by CRYSIS; a game that is going to be released on DVD9 and has some of the most advanced physics and graphics ever. Put simply, I wish the PS3 would have spent the money on more RAM; WAY MORE RAM instead of the Blu-Ray drive. This deficiency is becoming more and more apparent, especially with the revelation that Madden 08 will run at HALF the framerate of it's Xbox 360 cousin. I was really looking forward to buying Madden for my PS3, especially to finally use the Six-axis for a football game, but I am not going to give up 30fps for the ability to hike the ball by waving my hand.

As for Sony, I estimate that they have shaved about $100 off the production costs of the PS3 by eliminating the emotion engine and the dropping cost of BLR diodes and by switching to 65nm tech. However, the drop is still relative; they are still losing $200 on each PS3 now and for at least the next year. The PS3's success will be measured on how fast it can get the price down to $299.99 and then to the magic price point of $199.

Even if EVERY super hot game (MGS4, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet) were available RIGHT NOW, PS3 sales would still remain flat, as no matter how cool the games would be, the price is still $600 to get out the door with one game and tax; a price of entry that is still too much for most households worldwide.

At the end of the day, the $499 price tag will move a small amount of PS3s, but will not put a dent in either the 360's or Wii's sales.

The problem the PS3 has compared to the PS2, is that the PS2 was not losing over $300 per system right out the starting gate. Any initial loss for the PS2 was offset by the incredible demand that really was not satiated till about 18 months after launch; essentially by the time Sony caught up with demand for the PS2, any loss was long gone and Sony was making a tidy profit on each system sold.

The more and more the PS3 garners in just a "few" consumers and they pass on to others about what it has to offer the more it will sell.

Why are you still backing a dead format? The reason why HD-DVD is dying is because most of the studios support bluray. Its a fact. Once universal goes format neutral and they will...then the format war is over. A $499 PS3 (Which is the best bluray player on the market) only helps defeat HD-DVD.

300 and bloodiamond have the same video quality and sound quality on HD-DVD and Bluray. The specs on both are about the same...Warner has not fully utilized the 50 GB of the bluray disc when incoding. Remember HD-DVD is only 30 GB on dual layer.

You are right, HD DVD & Blu-ray use the exact same compression codes (MPEG2, VC1, etc..) and the same sound codes (True HD, etc..). So why would anyone buy a Blu-ray player for $200-$300 more? The size of the disc? Most HD DVD movies use the dual layer 30 GB and most Blu-ray movies use the single layer 25 GB, so it’s not that. Planet Earth shipped on 4 discs for each format. “Lair Lair” on HD DVD fit on a single layer, 15 GB disc. So 30 GB is plenty big enough for any movie. What about interaction? HD DVD offers picture in picture and web-based special features, something Blu-ray can’t do.

Let’s talk about studios. Sony is under investigation for behind the scenes deals with some Hollywood studios. Fact: HD DVD has more studio support that Blu-ray (total studios, not just the big ones). The number of movies available is about the same for each format.

Depends. Not for me. My 360 is still working after 1.5 years. And if not, I have 3 years full warranty. I see that as a really good deal. If your PS3 breaks down after 2.5 years, you've nothing. Plus, you still have no games even if your console works, so whats the point exactly?

The framerate on oblivion was better on the PS3.

EA said the framerate was 60 FPS on the Xbox 360 version of madden, and 30 FPS on the PS3 version....They never said if the PS3 version of 1080p native or 720p native like the Xbox 360 version.

You can do 1080p native at 60 fps on the PS3...look a Ninja Gaiden Sigma...

Until somebody plays madden 08 on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360...you can not say which one is better than the other.
