2.5 mill Consoles Defective

According to FOX News (10pm TV News Report), an estimated 2.5 million Xbox 360s have been reported defective. This could be the reason behind the 1.1 Billion $ fix and warranty extension.

MS in an attempt to cut off the CLASS ACTION lawsuit in the pipeline is trying to dampen the claims of the Class Action Lawsuit soon to be announced.

Their efforts would fall short though because MS keeps spinning the number of defective consoles rather than having a complete recall.

Defective consoles could be as high as 60 - 70% based on insiders figures.

MS ONLY said they will allocate 1.1 billion and three years to fix ALL consoles that will or have broken in the next three years.

MS is trying to appease the marketplace since it can no longer hide behind the issue.

Once the videos and pictures are released along with ALL repair shops invoices the truth will be known.

They are running ahead of the Class Action where they would have to release the facts and NOT SPIN behind lies.

How many consoles really sold? Less than 10 million.

I think the "right thing", ultimately, would have been to not ship a product of such low build quality. I imagine they weren't aware of the issues that have arisen, but they certainly knew what they'd built and what they'd built it out of. The warranty extension is fine, but I don't think they deserve a cookie - they are just covering their own butts. It's better than not doing it - I just don't think we should praise them for it especially given how long it took them to admit there was even a problem.

The only way around this would be to delay the box for a year to see if anything happens with their test batch.

Remember how small the original PS3 was supposed to be? Yeaaaah.

Assuming the PS3 stays problem free, sony really did do an INCREDIBLY job designing the box. But you can't say that MS did a horrible job. If cooling a processor was so damn easy why do you think they are STILL refining PC cooling solutions? Sometimes the original design doesn't work as well as planned and you just don't notice the design flaws until its been under heavy usage for a long period of time.

Yeah, the 360 wasn't perfect, but Its still a hell of a console. Bottom line.

Sony's not going to get an advantage from this.

A STANDARD 3 year warranty is not a bad thing. Refunding people who paid for their refurbished consoles is not a bad thing. And Sony dropping the price by $100 is pretty useless. It's still $100 dollars more expensive than the average 360 SKU that's bought (premium) and $200 dollars more expensive than the casual 360 SKU (core).

If you want to go hardcore and compare the Elite, then it's only a measly $20 dollars cheaper. But you get 2x the storage capacity and a greater selection of games.

And I love how these people get excited over a $100 dollar price cut when MS hasn't even mentioned a price cut yet. Then it's over.

I try my best to be console neutral, but in this case you're dead wrong. I'd rathe rspend an extra 100 dollars and get something built with quality. Plus Blu-Ray is pretty next gen. 100 dollars extra grants me a next-gen format player. If more people had PS3's maybe more developers would start using that extra space instead of focusin on the lowest common denominator.

I've thought about gettin a 360 in the past. Horror stories of rrod put me off a bit. If there is a 3 year warranty on the console it wont matter if it breaks. Hopefully MS might actually think about fixin it in newer systems now their payin the bill.

The 3 year warranty is only for 3 Red Ring errors. All other problems fall under the regular warranty.

But the good news is that Moore said they would actually be retroactively reimbursing people who have paid for a 3RROD fix/replacement. That's what surprised me.

I've been quite paranoid about mine overheating, but after a couple of hours of play I often check it and its almost cold.

Perhaps the issue is dependent on which supplier built it, or even whether you stand it on end or not. I had a zip drive that only worked horizontally but was supposed to work vertically too.

yeah it sucks that the hardware has issues, but im glad its finally getting sorted
ive had no problems with my console it doesnt get hot and seems to play fine (touch wood) but im kinda happy to know i can get it fixed for free, if i ever get a refurbished console ill be pissed though and ill be demanding a new one, i actually think its illegal for them to give refurbished consoles in my country but ill have to look into that

what people are not understandingis that a majority of the failing consoles are ones that were manufactured in the first year. during the first year, microsoft had 3 different companines manufacturing 360's for them. it wasn't until early this year that microsoft had "mutually" cancelled their contract with the manufacturing company that had been rumored to be the one pumping out the most defective consoles.

it will take probably another year before the 360's that are still going to fail to do so. microsoft extended the warranties because it finally realized they was no other way to contain the 360's that were laready manufactured and sold from the first year of production.

alot of people keep jumping on these articles and make all sorts of conclusions without actually looking at facts and information that has long been available

it is quite simple, there is an unusually high number of badly manufactures consoles from the first year out in the marketplace and the only way to address this is to provide the extended warranty so that microsoft is able to weed out the bad consoles when they fail. it was a smart move on microsofts part because the other option was a recall of all of it's consoles, which would end up costing them $4-5 billion instead of teh $1 billion it is costing them now to refund repair costs and extend warranties

I had read a few months back that the heat warps the board and causes the chips to seperate from the board. If that is trully the reason for the "red ring of death" then the only way to fix the issue 100% would be to completely redesign the inside of the 360 to ventilate properly. The inclusion of the 65nn would also help because it runs cooler than the one now.

with 20 Dollar more u have Blu-ray player and third party HDD support..

u can add 500 GB HDD to ur PS3 , 120 GB HDD in Elite is an advantage for JUST XBOX users.. for PS3 users there is no difference between 60GB or 80GB or 120GB ... u can add extra space anytime u want..

Microsoft has enough money to handle this problem.. they dont want to lose Console war for just a hardware error (BIG ONE) .. so they do anythin to solve that..

$1.1 billion is a lot. The xbox1 project lost $4 billion all together in 4 years. MS said they would be making a profit by the end of this year buy that isn't going to happen. Also the red rings doesn't seem to be fixed. The failure rate could rise easily because launch consoles are getting old and people who just bought a new 360 those are not gonna break for a while, but eventually will. I say the failure rate can be as high as 40%. Sony just got a 2nd chance to take MS out because PS3 can drop the price. MS isn't going to drop the price because they want to cushion the 1.1 billion lost. Every business wants to make money even if you're a Sony or MS that make 300 billion to 400 billion every year.

Sony the company isn't happy about this, i dont think sony wants MS to fail. i think it's the extreme Sony fanatics that carryon bout MS failing just like the extreme Xbox fanboys that talk up a storm when sony was in the red earlier this year after the ps3 launched. healthy competion helps other grow. if MS never did live i dont think sony would have really aimed for such an ambition online system, and follow through with so much more in the coming months. i sure hope that MS gets this thing addressed and so they can greatly satisfy it's buyers. seriously because this aint a good look.

The 360 is a wonderful console with plenty of interesting games. If I was in the market purchasing a console, and I did my market research on what's available. I would pay the extra 100 dollars for something reliable. The games for it will comes this August/September/October.

last gen, xbox was more powerful console but lost to PS2 due the games, even though PS2 had a rough start. Same with this gen.

I stopped "hanging out" with Sony when they lied about their launch PS2's being tested when they were prototypes. The problem there was that they had to be taken to court to finally admit that they sold prototypes to the public because they were behind schedule. Ironically enough, the PS3 actually seems to be reliable.

M$, on the other hand, has taken every step possible to help out the consumer in spite of the losses they'll incur. Sure their console wasn't ready to launch, sure the Ring of Death is a major malfunction, but at least M$ isn't a malfunction like the A-Holes at Sony.

I sense a bit shift coming. MS can't drop because they need to be profitable - 100 would be outrageous and out of the question, 50 would have been reasonable, had they been making money on 360s and not losing it - 65nm changes this and gives them profit on each.

They needed at the least a Halo 3 boost, that would flow into GTA and then the holidays which would be 4 months of increased sales - where selling at a loss would kill any profits. People said they could afford it. Of course, but they want to be profitable - and now they've lost an additional 1.1 BILLION!

They can't react to Sony - the Elite is the main attraction and that's comparatively worse than the PS3 which is soon to be only 20 bucks more expensive, the Elite is also apparently in short supply, causing these decreases in sales even though the Premium and Core (both now "gimped" in the eyes of potential Xbox consumers (hardcore gamers)). Furthermore, Sony's closer than they were to mass market, and have the most diverse lineup this holiday season.

I'm not gonna put out any guesses, this is gonna be an intense second year. And E3's so close!

it is completely wrong, and this is the reason. during th first year of production for the 360, microsoft had 3 manufacturers producing 360's for them.. earlier this year, microsoft "mutually" cancelled the contract with the manufacturer that was rumored to be the one responsible for a majority of faulty 360's. microsoft has also taken steps to improve some of the components within the 360.

you really need to compare the number of failed 360's from the first year of production, and the number of failed 360's from the current year of production. you will clearly see a BIG difference in the failure rate. the reason people are reporting the failures is because most failures are happening with the FIRST YEAR production 360's, and from the reviously refurbished 360's.

if you need proof, please try to find any mention of high failure rates on the Xbox360 Elite...guess what, there aren't those kinds of reports because the manufacturing quality is now better than it was in the first year. it really is a bit naive to make a statement like you did that says the 360's will continue to have the same high failure rate, when it has already been addressed with hardware manufacturing. well let me ask you this...despite everyone knowing that the 360 has a higher than normal failure rate (i personally believe it is around 20-25%), people keep buying the 360 over the ps3...why is that? even though there were bad consoles manufactured the first year, people continue to buy the 360 because it has better games, and the real perception is that people would rather spend $400 for a gaming console rather than $600 for the same thing, with less games, and no better graphics (in many cases, worse graphics on ports and multi-platform games.

Microsoft does not need to make hardware. They need to Hire SONY to make a console for them and just focus on Software. I love the games on the 360 but the hardware is a piece of $hit. Sony PS3 has a less than 1% failure rate so maybe they need Sony's help. I think this move, by extending the warranty to 3 years, is great move, you know why?

1. Early when MS started hearing about the complaints, I don't think MS took it as serious, and treated it as a tiny percentage of isolated cases. Because of that, I think they extended the warranty to like a year and thought they could get away since it might of been just a bad batch or something.

-But they continued to ignore it and the cases started adding up, so now MS had to really take step back and see exactly what is causing the RROD. While they were doing that more cases of failures were being reported, so now it is a serious issue.

-They have 10 million+ gamers out there, now how do you cover the consoles that might over heat? while you continue to treat the consoles that are reporting the RROD?

A. MS can replace over 10 million consoles, which would be gazillion dollars, and really would be taking 5 steps back with every step forward.

B. They can extend the warranty for 3 years, for users that have experienced the RROD, as there are a lot out there. If it is every xbox360, that is susceptible, then in three years they will know. If not, then they don't have to replace the given console, as if they would of gone with PLAN A, spending unnecessary money.

b. Plan B, does not cover gamers that have not experienced the RROD , because it just might not be every xbox360. So MS is playing it by "the red ring ear" hehe. But if you think the Xbox 360's can't last 3 years then we all will know, as all 10 million+ will eventually fail.

With extending the warranty, they don't have to replace every xbox 360, even if it has not experienced the RROD, which saves money. If they have isolated the issue and found a viable fix, then in the long-term, those xbox 360's hopefully will break down before the 3 year and get replaced or fixed with the new solution, by then eradicating all the bad Xbox 360's.

Then if you xbox360 last 4 years , then you have nothing to complain about, just like a computer/component that might fail after 3+ years. Well lets hope that is not the issue, but Xbox360's will be like $250 by then.

Of course people will complain about a 3-year warranty, when most electronics companies don't offer anything close. So why ask the questions, "what if the Xbox fails after 3 years?", well that is the same with any electronic device you buy, it might fail after the warranty is up. Just as your car engine seized up after the warranty period or something. No difference. Take it for what it is, if you have had the RROD, then you are all set for 3 years, if not, we can only hope it doesn't appear.

What I don't get about the whole price argument is how the $200 360 hd dvd drive doesn't factor in the discussion more. I know when I was buying a console I wanted a high def player too. This is bad news for MS. I see some of you are so drunk on the 360 kool-aid that you're willing to stick it out despite having gone through several consoles; but there are a growing number of people who've been debating which system to get and are going to choose PS3 over a console so likely to break. It's not like we're talking 60 bucks for one of these things; it's almost an investment. I've never had ANY console fail on me - including my LAUNCH 360 and Thompson Drive XBOX - both which were supposedly "BAD".

My Sony and Nintendo products have worked flawlessly also. Though each controller is different, each feels "right" when I'm playing it.

Anyway, I bought a 2 year extended warranty for my 360, but have not had to use it - so I guess I'm covered for another 6 months on any issue and for the next 18 months with the RRD.

But do you guys see why competition is good? Sony is really starting to pick up speed with the PS3 and Nintendo, well, you know. Competition means that Microsoft HAD to do something. Bottom line - its good for us - the gaming public.

MS has had an ungodly number of console failures. I'm glad they are extending the warranty. However, it does make me wonder. I have a launch console still. I've never had any problems with it. are probably related to who assembled them; that is, which factory they were assembled in. Mine is now 20 months old (well 19 1/2), and is in a closed but ventilated cabinet to reduce dust. They will abandon their customers once again after a short life span(like the other Xbox machines). This is why i trust Sony products a lot more. Some of the comments here are just absolutely ridiculous off the mark and downright lies. MS is owning up to a problem and you people are trying your hardest to spin this as a bad thing. Do you think you are going to convert one person over to the PS3?? Hell no! The 360 has a lot to offer even with the hardware problems that now seem to be on their way to being corrected.

I think some people missed the news that MS has changed some of the internals on the 360 to cool better and fix this problem. This is why it's taken some time to come to this announcement, because they needed to research the problem and then apply a fix.

I have atleast 70 friends on my XBL account and I know atleast 30 people in real life that have a Xbox 360 and out off all of them I think 5 of them (including myself) have had problems. But Microsoft has done a good job on replacement 360s. If any of you 360 owners are worried that your 360 is going to get the ring of death buy a nyko external cooler, it gave me peace of mind knowing that my 360 won't overheat.

How am I in denial? I am a huge fan of the 360. I haven't had any hardware issues. However, I fully recognize that alot of people have. I also recognize that Microsoft has been taking steps to correct it. I'm not blind to the fact that MS probably should've tested their products better or chosen more reliable manufactorers, but for me, the benefits I've had far outweigh the risks. "360 has all the games.." all you fanboys are alike. Last time I checked 360 had one decent game I actually want to try, and that's obviously Gears of War. I have a ps2 that I bought from a friend, and I have about 7 games and in the meantime while I wait for ps3 or 360 to aquire some decent titles, that's what's keeping me at bay. Most people praise the console they took a plunge for because they want to justify their purchase, but as far as being objective goes no one here is really on top of things.

Xbox 360s are failing, that's a fact. It's a huge setback, enourmous, even if the online service is better and it does technically have a greater selection of games, that becomes meaningless when you have to hastle and get your console repaired. It's not about the 3 year warranty, it's about turning on your console, playing it, and wondering "man oh man is this thing going to break?". 33% failure rate? unacceptable. My close friend had his break, and he loves to game almost every day, sure he has the warranty, but now he has to wait to get his console repaired. As far as I can see right now, the Ps3 is beginning to look better and better, despite the higher price and limited selection. However, already you have The Darkness, and Ninja Gaiden sigma, and that would be enough for me.

Retailers are trying to sell the ps3 from two different perspectives, one being the gaming console, the other being the blu ray player. The fact that the ps3 has two major markets supporting it is a huge plus. The other enourmous plus is that video games for ps3 can use blu ray disks. I'm not a ps3 fanboy, i'm not a 360 fanboy, but the way things are going right now, ps3 is slowly catching up to the competition and the long term result seems quite promising. Unless M$ can regain their reputation their horizons suddenly do not look so bright.

I think M$ is loosing more money than SONY is. Yes, MS is setting aside 1.1 Billion as expected costs associated with repairs. However, that doesn't mean they will use that much. It's a prediction, not an exact amount.

My friends use it as means of competition, they sometimes leave it days on and although folding@home really doesn't push the PS3 to no limit whatsoever, having it on for a long period of time is. It was smart of MS to come out with the warrenty news just before E3 and months before all the good games come.

This news before E3 will num the pain and help brush off fanatic Sony fanboy haters. MS announced this warrenty new months before the heavy hitters and secrets come out so we as gamers can take in and heal from defective 360's and the increasing of rabidness from crazy rabid Sony fanboys.

I have seen and/or heard 6 reports on this on Fox News TV and radio so far today. In not one of them (again, not one, that is 0, nada) is the number 2.5 million mentioned. Just the "up to 1.1 billion" dollar figure they are dedicating to repairs and warrenty increase. They also mentioned the flaw is being fixed for those being produced now.

Well the Xbox360 has been out for 2 years...now with another 3 year extended warranty the Xbox360 will be replaced by then (MS likes to abandon their gamers within 5 years) It's all business...This should be a very interesting E3...$1 billion on repairs, $50 on worthless GTA content, $$$ on buying exclusives...Now I see why their gaming division doesn't make any money...Oh yeah we can't forget how great the Zune has been...If I were a shareholder...i'd say WTF ?????? Oh wait more on the MS warranty issue. It cracks me up at how much fanboys go out of their way to try and discredit another company.

As for this article and more importantly this issue. Clearly MS knew the issue was big... If you look at the timeline you can see MS knew the issue existed about a year into the life cycle...hence the back dating extension of warranty's on the 360 to a full year. Clearly the problems persisted...and clearly MS up until recently (see new added heat sink) MS didn't have a good solution to the issue. Realization that this problem was bigger than even they first realized is an understatement... But they are now stepping up. 3 yr warraty + refund to any who paid before.

I personally have no issue with it...and am happy now. I have a extened - warranty that should last until the 360 is replaced by their next machine and I have been running great games for almost 2 yrs now.

First of all, I don't give a crap what console parents get for there kids. Thats the problem with people today, seems like everyone cares more about what other people are buying for some reason. I bought a 360 and I love it. Don't get sooooooo pissed off for nothing, I don't give a damn if you are pissed are not, I don't care what you buy or what you say. Fine... microsoft did and even increase the warranty 3 years... which will cover any problem anyone can ever have with the ROD issue.

Was that enough? Nope... now they want microsoft to release % of failures? Why? Are they going to buy an xbox 360 or are interested on microsoft fixing the problem? Ofcourse not... they love that this happened to the xbox 360. I mean think about it... if the xbox 360 didnt have this problem... what's other disadvantage would the 360 have against the PS3? And it does not matter if many people like me still have their launch console and are not having problems... It also does not matter if microsoft addressed this issue with the new consoles including the elite.... why it does not matter? Becuase ROD gives them hopes... hopes that the PS3 will have a chance now that the xbox 360 is having some bad press. But what you people don't know is that this will simply force microsoft to give more goodies to people and even a price drop that they otherwise wouldnt get.

Also, as much as sony fanboys think this will destroy the xbox 360... lets not forget what the xbox 360 is... A VIDEO GAME CONSOLE. Noticed the [GAME] in the name? Yes, it's all about the games.
As long as the xbox 360 have the games people want to play, price advantage it will continue to beat the PS3. Specially when you concider that nice a sweet 3 year warranty.

I think this whole xbox 360 failure big deal everyone is making out of this... will endup pushing microsoft to be even more competitive. Yes... they will fix the problem... and at the end it will push microsoft to drop the price lower than otherwise they would.. and maintain the warranty better than Sony and Nintendo.

Also, lets not forget that most people started having problems with the xbox 360 after the year... the PS3 still does not have one year. I don't think the PS3 will have hardware issues in one year... but in 3 years... lots of things break.. 3 years is a long time.... well... the xbox 360 is covered for 3 years... consumers will see that.

Yeah i said it I'm a ps3 fanboy starting now!!! Xbox decieved me it seduced me with halo3, gears, madden, and plenty games. But it destroyed me as a gamer. It made me trade in my 360 and buy a ps3!

Dang my computers busted (still using someone elses now :(...) To add to that my 360 got the ring of death ouch. But even though it does suck I enjoy the games much more on the 360 than the PS3. Im not going to call the PS3 the better console yet. To me its just too soon. With the 360 I have alot more cooler games to choose from than the PS3. But everything has its flaws as they say. And yup I have tooken a punch from this one but at least thier not charging me for the band aids.

I'am a strong supporter of the 360 as of now. But I know ( well Im no Ms. Cleo but... cough*) that later on down the road Im going to want to hop over to the PS3 also because a couple of years down the road the the two consoles are going to be neck and neck. And they both are going to have alot to offer. But as of now Im not doin the PS3. Maybe i'll start poking onto the PS3 once this *HOME*online idea gets to running I might start to pop my head onto the PS3, thats something that realy caught my eye, thinking as I read thats more my taste right there.

If i could describe the PS3 as a food I would say it would be Bologna. Because it just has everything in it. But it just doesnt have the bread and lettuce with it yet. Being the picky eater that I'am :) Im not taking it until I see it gots the stuff I like and something I dont already have on my plate (price drop wouldnt hurt :P). I might even have both the 360 and ps3 running at the same time so I could talk to my friends on one console and play a game on a different console. But theres realy no need to do that when you have all the same great games and more than the PS3 on your 360. (Pretty much fact)

A. Dont play until a really good game comes out right now im playing TenchuZ
B. Buy the fan made by nyko (well the 360 cooling system sucks)
C. Buy any multi platform games on ps3 preventing long term use of the 360 preventing over heating preventing the glue holding the CPU/motherboard from slipping preventing the 3lights of death.
D. now if they can just get past the frimware updates and when u get a new game 3 lights it will be all good.

Yeah when it's the 3 red rings, that is poor manufacturing on their side and they need to be aware of it and cater to their customers. Bad disc drives is not their faults as they are faults of the dvd drive manufacturer. They need to get on them for that. I will admit I am on my second 360, not cause of the red rings but of a crappy dvd drive. This one seems to be working great.
