PS3 Outselling Xbox 360 in 2009 Fiscal Year

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have all released their fiscal reports for the closing months of 2009, and some of the numbers are very interesting. While Microsoft currently holds a 5 million unit lead over Sony in worldwide sales, Microsoft is currently at 38.7 million units, while Sony has 33.5 million, things are looking up for Sony.

Xbox had around 7M headstart, and according to faster PS3 sale rate it's impossible to keep it at constant level.

This year will be heavy in competition for both consoles but with Natal and Dildo(It's not a jab on controller, I just find it funny to name it that way) being released in autumn, this fight will cary over to 2011.

Man, it seems like every time we see these reports, the gap between 360 and PS3 gets smaller and smaller.

As for the PS2, I'd love to see Sony stop supporting it so all the resources that are still working with it would hopefully move on to the PS3, but when it still sells like that, how could you possibly pull it off the shelves?

Do you kids just make up whatever numbers you want? End of 2k6 according to MS they shipped 10.4 million consoles. At the end of 2k6 Sony said they shipped 1.2 million PS3 consoles. Regardless of the numbers, it is certain that Sony is closing the gap that MS had created by releasing a year early and that has got to have MS running scared. I remember when the Xbox camp was saying how it would take ten years plus for the PS3 to even catch up to the 360....I laughed then and I am laughing now. The slim reignited the the flame for sony that and U2:AT. I just went to best buy and they didnt have not one PS3 on shelves for sale. Sont has a very good line up this year as well.

MS need to keep pushing the exclusives at this point to stay ahead of the game and if the reports are true they POSSIBLY have many exclusives to release this year.(Gears 3, Fable 3, Halo Reach, ME2, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell) MS has brought thier best exclusives to date to the table this year.

Since the PS3 has been available worldwide it's outsold the 360.

And those talking about 360 numbers are missing something. The 360 had an extra Christmas season over the PS3 when the PS3 wasn't available everywhere.

When the PS3 launched worldwide in March of 2007, the 360 was sitting at 11 million consoles and the PS3 had managed less than 2 million, so the 360 enjoyed about a lead of about 9 million when the PS3 went global.

If Sony keeps to their forecast by the end of the fiscal year (march 31) that lead looks to be cut to just over 4 million. They've been outselling the 360 and chipping at the 9 million lead every since they went global.

Right now this 6.5 million PS3's sold takes the total to 33.5 million compared to 38.7 million 360's according to official numbers. That's only a difference of just over 5 million right now.

I'm not going to say whether Sony will pass Xbox 360 sales or not, although it certainly seems like it. My guess is that both end up at about the same number of units.

BUT, what will all the xbox-only owners say IF the PS3 does pass the Xbox 360? Will you still be as rabbid as you've been for the past four years, or will you admit that the PS3 is better? You know, because sales matter so much to you.

I wish Sony continued success with the PS3, I won't deny that it is my favourite system this gen, but I do not want MS to give up, because they have continued to push each other, and without them we wouldn't have Uncharted 2, inFAMOUS (yes it's awesome), Killzone 2, GOW3 (and many many other games) to be playing.

Why do you keep bringing up this launches aligned thing? It doesn't change anything in the real world, the actual numbers do. And all in all the 360 and ps3 are so close and wil remain so that arguing over it is trivial. 3rd parties aren't suddenly going to favour a system now. If one of them was doing wii or ps2 numbers it would be different but they are not. The gap is 5.2 million and even if does go to 4 million in 3 months (practically impossible unless the 360 stops selling) then what does it really change?

PS3 outselling the 360 by 100K a week for sometime now? No. During christmas yes and probably more but for the rest of the year no not at all. Weekly sales in the slow periods roughly are: wii=350K, ps3=200K, 360=150K

The PS3 has been outselling 360 for some time now. that is why 360's 1 year head start has not even been able to be maintained by microsoft. ps3 came out of the gate slow, so slow that it even allowed the gap to hit 8 million at one point, but then it sprinted off so fast that it has closed the gap back farther than it was at launch, and is now chipping away at that 1 year head start microsoft had before ps3 launched. it has been outselling xbox 360 worldwide by at least 100k units per week for quite a while now, and it's "killer app" hasn't even launched yet (look at sales, the gran turismo games have always sold more than final fantasy, mgs, gow, or any other franchise on a playstation platform).

I absolutely love my PS3 and give props to Sony for hanging in there and giving me some of the best experiences ever. One thing I keep seeing and can't stand about this sight are the whining fanboys for PS3(my console of choice). 360 means nothing to me so I have no reason to talk it down and get so caught up in numbers. RROD would in the end make 360 sales increase (replacing defective units and a small portion of banned ones my guess about 500 000 which is 1/2 of the banned consoles) and a higher software attach rate as they are being bought almost exclusively to play games on.

PS3 sales are close to real (less replacement units sold) and a portion of those sales are split between gamers and movie buffs, so the attach rate for software would logically be lower.

In the end the number of WORKING consoles sitting in peoples living rooms are most likely much more close.
This logically explains the difference in attach rates yet the similar number of working units in homes.

If you look at pre-orders of current games you'll easily see the trend changing. The gap between PS3 and 360 is almost non-existent now.

I didn't. When you align the launches, there's no doubt the PS3 is selling faster. I was pointing out that since the 360 had competition worldwide, it's been in 3rd place these last 3 years. I never mentioned aligning the launches.

The reason it matters is developers don't make games for the market now. They make games for what they think the market will be in two years. The fact that the PS3 is selling faster, and looks to overtake the 360 possibly this year or next will absolutely change developers attitudes when they're in the planning stage of game development.

Actually, that's if Sony hits their sales targets of 13 million by March 31st for the fiscal year and the 360 continues on as it's selling now. And does it change anything? Absolutely! As I mentioned, new games are being developed right now not with the current market in mind, but with what the market will look like in 1-2 years.

I too used to own a x360. it broke down and scrached my games. Got it back from the ROD insurance and sold it and never looked back. Lucky for me the PS3 was just launched so I haven't missed it neither.

A couple of points I'd like to highlight since many are commenting on it,

Everyone says XB had a year headstart but they forget about PAL. 18 months later it release. If you even that out, you could say XB had a 15 month world wide head start. Thats not technically true of course, but its just to give an idea of the numbers M$ had when PS3 launched. It was closer to 10M than the six some are pretending now.

As for the "at this rate it will take" bla bla bla arguement, who cares when it catches up when the gap is only 5M? If XB was 7M and PS3 was 2M then yes, 5M is alot. But when XB is 40M and PS3 is 35M, WHO CARES? The percentage is so much smaller, its really irrelivant.

Since when? That marketshare still exists. The PS2 still sells and is still one of the most played consoles in the world. PS2 games still pop up routinely on top 10 sales lists month to month.

While there's no doubt the PS2 user base has shrunk, it's not like it's disappeared overnight. If anything, Sony just upped their ship forecasts for the PS2 based on inroads their making in new markets.

Sony hasn't given up the marketshare they had with the PS2. It's smaller, but it shouldn't be ignored.

The PS3 was always priced more than the 360 up until Sept. of last year, and that "it had no games the first year", and that Microsoft had a year head start, I think that's very impressive for Sony. Things are only looking better for them in the future with great exclusives.

its been 3 years now i think if ps3 would have taken the lead it would have done so by now. the reason behind this is because soo many people prefer the xbox360 for games and online. its a fact and just get used to it.btw with alan wake,halo reach,gears of war 3,project natal,splinter cell conviction all theses games will sell like crazy. i can only think of 1 for the ps3 witch is grand turismo and maybe god of war. sorry ps3 people but xbox360 has a much bigger line up, and we havent even seen e3 yet.

When Microsoft's lead with the 360 gets close to vanishing, they will just cut support for it like they did with the XBOX. Even though Sony announced a 10 year plan for the PS3 prior to launch, they will cry that any sales after the 360's quit date doesn't count.

And to be honest, the XBOX was a much better console hardware-wise than the 360 is, and look at how short lived it was.

Psp get its profits thanks to the psn store. Home is a cash cow.

It does not matter how well the 360 sold it matters where they are going. Right now and for a long time now the PS3 has out sold the 360 month over month, and really MS isn't gaining any new consumers they are getting a lot of rebuys. IMO the number of actaul people playing on the systems is proble even. The only difference is the install base, 28 million xbox's sold now they sold ten million more 360's then that good for them. The PS2 sold 150 million and only 33 million PS3's have sold If even half of the remaining PS2 owners get a PS3 that gives them better numbers then even the wii. Do I think that the PS3 will hit 75 million in sales, no not really but it has alot more sales coming its way then the 360 does. Oh for those who think that the Natal as going to propel microsoft they are wrong, If the Natal is only 50 bucks then it will be crappy mark my words it won't work the way they say if it is that cheap.

People forget that Sony and Nintendo have multiple consoles on the market. Looking at complete console sales for each company, since Microsoft only has one... then they obviously come in third in overall console sales. Sony is juggling PS3, PS2 (who woulda thought it would still be selling), PSPs. Microsoft is a one trick Pony, and to be honest, they still didn't get that right. At the end of the day, who sells more consoles than the other company? (Since many N4gers only care about sales)

With how many rebuys of 360's MS has had I Imagine the number of poeple playing the systems are the same, heck PS3 may even have the lead in that catagory... Think about it how many 360's has the average xbox fan purchased. Most the people I know that have one are on there second one at least. I myself had two, first one RRoD, I traded the second one away before it had the chance to do so. And not having the 360 for awhile I did not miss out on anything, until Mass Effect 2 and SplinterCell: Conviction i never even thought about getting another one, I mean these two games make me want to play them but I won't be buying another xbox

All the platforms are great, and i did haw a few Xbox 360's (Won't go into why I don't have one anymore, but I'm sure most people experienced what I have.) I won't go fanboy, just know that all the companies are having success this time around. I am interested in the rundown of 2010...to see which system sales the most games. I don't doubt it I had a hell of a time finding just 1 PS3 last night. 3 Gamestops, Bestbuy, Target and 2 wal-marts later I find one left at wal-mart. Best buy said they had 25 in that day and they sold out by that evening. I couldn't belive I've had my Launch 60 for over 3 years and it just died on me. "Damn Yellow light" the fix worked for a few day and thank goodness I was able to back up my game saves and deactivate my system.

I'm going to miss it, it worked perfectly with no problems then just one day KO.

Alot of fanboys like to play sales. A bit silly really when Sales to Date numbers are used.

Both Microsoft and Sony are owned by shareholders, and they mean investment. Shareholder do not give a sh1t about Sales to Date, they only care about Sales for Last Quarter. That is true. A console may have sold 400M units to date, but if it is now only selling 100,000 units a quarter then they are not interested.

Right now, performance wise, the market is saying the PS3 is winning the sales race against 360. Sony is winning. And the money men will side with Sony in the gaming industry because although no profit comes from the console itself, they know this sales of this console means raw profit from a faster growing software audience than it's direct rival.

I thought I would just share that little fact of life in the hope people realise sales mean nothing to us, only important to shareholders because next quarter it could be Microsoft on the up. These things swing like roundabouts!

My fellow Sony gamers, though Sony is closing the gap, MS has ONE TRICK up their sleeve that even Sony cannot match. That trick, my friends, is their ability to brainwash their already idiotic 360 owners and/or fanboys. MS will simply ignore reports of "illegal modding" on their console, wait for those "modded consoles" to reach significant numbers, then ban them. MS will not completely ban the accounts of the owners of the banned consoles but simply tell them to go "buy another 360". The same thing can be said true to the 360 hardware in general, with the defect rates of the 360. MS will simply just make new batches of 360 as well as refurbished 360s more unreliable. This is in turn, when it dies, MS will simply tell their folks to buy a new 360. These two tactics will help inflate Microsoft's console numbers worldwide.

I don't really care which one is doing better to be honest. I like that the ps3 has free online. I like the halo series so far on the 360, but recently my xbox 360 year subscription expired. I haven't played ODST, but heard the single player wasn't long and that the multiplayer is halo 3 mp. But I will end up buying a subscription later on for it, if its worth the money for gaming online.
