PS3: US Study shows Blu-ray Disc compatibility is major incentive for purchase

A SCEA study has shown that for US consumers, the PS3's Blu-ray Disc compatibility was a major incentive for buying the next generation console.

According to Sony's research, some 83% of respondents watch Blu-ray movies occasionally or frequently on their PS3 and 72% have purchased at least one Blu-ray disc since getting a PS3.

Most importantly, 87% intend to purchase at least one BD movie in the next 12 months and 82% of them watch movies on Blu-ray Disc as their first choice whenever they are available.

and when comparing Blu-ray Hardware to HD DVD Hardware they don't count the PS3 because they say people buy it for games so this should shed some light about how important Blu-ray in the PS3 matters to PS3 owners as a movie option.

Taladega, Sleepy Hollow (crappy quality), Casino Royal, Pirates 1, Pirates 2 and The Departed. I'm getting Planet Earth ASAP too. By the end of the year, I'll have sigma, motorstorm, resistance, drakes fortune, lair, heavenlysword, LBP and probably Haze or R6 vegas. Add about 8-10 movies to that and I've spent a hell of a lot of money and have been doing plenty with my PS3.

There's a good chance I'll get folklore too. Thank god I just graduated and my payscale is increasing. lol

Not because it's the ideal format for games, but because it gives the console a DUAL PURPOSE to give people a reason to buy it.
Why WOULDN't people consider it an incentive to buy the PS3?!

Funny thing, when I first got into gaming all those years ago I decided which console I wanted based on the games it had, what a quaint way of doing things where a device made for games was used for games alone.

Calm down dear, its only a news post!

My point is this, games consoles should be exactly that, a games console. I have no problem with the evolution of consoles in to a more powerful thing but I am a firm believer in the old truth that convergence will more often than not leave you with 1 device which is little more than average at many tasks.

I despair that someone would buy a games console for its move ability over its quality as a games console. Its not old fashioned or fanboyish but instead just pointing out a truth that games consoles are being used as trojan horses to get many different media sat under our telly in 1 box rather than being true to there names as games consoles and being exclusive for this purpose of gaming which is something I would prefer!

I have a DVD player, I have a pc that can surf the net, I have an iPod for music playback and in all these cases the stand alone unit is far superior to the compromised unit shoehorned into a games consoles case.

europe is doing just find with bluray game stores 700 plus only stock bluray movies thats in the uk all big electrical stores giving more space for blu ray hd dvd was put in the corners as blu ray is all set out even with seating areas to veiw on 50 inch plus screen
game which is the biggest in the country spoke to loads of outlets about xbox add on speacial order no one wants one

PSX my 1st and only Cd-player got that hooked up on a nice home theather and boom!
PS2 my 1st and only dvd player again coonect it a nice Sony home theather and boom!
PS3 probably my 1st and only Blu-ray player connected a Sony 5.1 home theather and boom!
plan to buy a 7.1 home theather in the future though.
