PS3 takes top spot in U.S. for first time

According to an article by the Seattle P.I. Microsoft contends that the PS 3 will be back in thrid place soon. The response was prompted by an article touting the PS 3 passing the Xbox 360 and Wii in September 09 sales.

The PS 3 has made strides in the U.S. after the price drop which follows increased sales in Asia and Europe in the hotly debated and contested console wars with each side offering up sales figures to tout the market position of their systems.

With the 09 holiday season pending, this is shaping up to be a hotly contested selling period.

Consider this, last year when the 360 slashed it's price after being outsold badly all year long - they managed to move 347,000 consoles in the month of Sept according to the NPD numbers.

After the PS3's price cut, and despite still being $100 more than the 360, sales spike to almost half a million consoles in the US. 491,800.

That's 40% more sales then the 360 managed via it's price cut.

It's obvious that this was what consumers were waiting for, and we know the PS3 has outsold the 360 overall since it launched worldwide. Clearly consumers favor the PS3 over the 360, yet we're still subjected to article after article claiming that's not the case. The facts speak for themselves.

there are many big exclusive games coming out for the PS3, I don't see any reason for the PS3, which is thriving at a great price point with arguably the best tech and games, to slow down. I think Microsoft figures regardless of whether or not that statement is true, it's best to say it either way, reassure everyone now so they don't jump ship. It makes sense I suppose, there's nothing to lose by saying it.

Holidays are comin, System selling exclusives are comin (ie GT5, GoW3, Heavy Rain etc.) not to mention the promise of a long bright future with games like Agent and The Last Guardian, it's at a fair affordable price point, and you get free PSN so you can use all the features right out of the box. I think Microsoft is more worried than they would have you believe.

@likedamaster: So, where's this 4.3 billion dollar loss you pulled out of your a$$? I read the link, and all I see are analysts predicting stuff, but nowhere do I see Sony reporting such a loss. Plus, if you want to play it that way, I could say that the entire Xbox division has cost Microsoft 5 billion dollars since it's inception. 4 billion in losses for the original Xbox, and 1 billion in repair costs alone for the 360. But, you wouldn't be interested in those numbers because they don't prop up Microsoft or the 360.

@ApocalyPS3: When an entire brand is based around one game, it is expected that that one game will sell to everyone that buys the brand. What Microsoft does is starve their fanbase of great franchises, in favor of milking the few they have. The result is that the fanbase is deprived of variety and thus devour the one or two quality franchises that do trickle out. Sony and the PS3 do not require an answer to Halo 3 because the Playstation brand is accustomed to variety. See, the Playstation brands greatest strength, which can also be its greatest weakness, is that there are simply too many great games to play. People can't afford them all, so they have to pick and choose. But with the 360, all you have is Halo and recently Gears of War. So everyone can buy them because they don't have to worry about choice. The Xbox brand will milk Halo until the fanbase realizes what a washed out, has-been, totally generic franchise it is, while the Playstation brand will continue to have "too many" games, "too much" variety.

Sales mean nothing when you really only have one choice.

I was expecting much more of a pop, only to be disappointed. We need PS3 to do better to keep Micro$oft honest. Only a 120k lead after two months of pent up demand world wide which included many stores in the USA selling out before the price drop of old machines. And you would expect a BIGger boost. Now I know it was A BIG BOOST COMPAREING TO LAST YEARS PS3, but when you compare it to xbox360 which still cost the same to get a basic model, and they only dropped the price on the big model $100. That one month 120k lead is disappointing! Especially with uncharted 2 being released. Come the tally of October's NPD numbers I expect xbox360 to blow the PS3 away. I expect the wii to get a little scared.
Last time the PS3 had a price drop of $100 it was short lived also. And that was before we had a world wide economic meltdown.

Actually it is more than 1 Billion since that estimate is about 2 years old already...and last I checked 360's STILL fail. No matter who says what to spin $#@!. So you could easily estimate between 2 to MAYBE 3 Billion in costs for failures, add that to the 7 Billion loss on the original Xbox PLUS not to mention the costs of dev'ing/,manufacturing the 360 itself early on and you really see how things are with MS.

But we are wasting our time HDG! Because you know just as well as I do that the uninformed know nothing but misinformation only to try and pass it off as fact...if only closed minds came with closed mouths as well!

I will say this, the new titles look great. Uncharted 2, MAG, God of War 3, etc. I know that Rockstar was said to be working on a PS 3 only title that is going to take advantage of all the extra storage of a Blu Ray. It may seem logical, but if both would be out at the same time, it doesnt necessarily mean that the 360 and the ps3 would sell the same as they do now, theres too many variables to consider the sales 1:1.
For instance, the 360, could have had no rrod if it was released a year later, and thus have a better name now.
Or the ps3 would lack a good gpu if it where released a year earlier, these are things that can highly affect the sales ratio.

As a person who stood in line for the X360 and the PS3 i witnessed the anticipation for both consoles and there was a far greater demand for PS3's than X360 at thier respective launches, just off the history.

Stood in line one night for a X360 , over 48 hrs for a PS3.

PS3 couldve caught up at their launch had sony not botched it and not provided enough consoles. Once the launch day hype faded and consoles werent available people turned to buying the Wii (launched the same week) and the Xbox 360.

The demand for PS3 is there its always been there now the price is right its showing in the sales.

As long as the GAMES are there im happy. Thats all that should matter to any GAMER with thier console of choice, and we all know who wins that battle.

Well that's completely untrue. One of the primary logical operators is the If. Your basic operators are "Not", "And", "Or", and "If/Then".

If MS came out at the same time they would be behind in sales. MS was smart to release a year earlier because releasing at the same time as a Sony console after dominating 2 previous gens would be suicide. People would have gravitated toward Sony over MS due to the success of the last 2 gens. MS needed that year head start to get people on XBL to hook them in and to get the early adapters clamoring for something new.

MS risked it all this gen. They released a defective system still not fixed this gen, charged a fee for a service free elsewhere and still has sold well but at the cost of their reputation. Next gen they would have to release earlier than the competition and try to regain consumer confidence. For MS releasing at the same time as the competition would not be logical.

I would say Sony would be dominating because of a couple of things, XBOX 360 didn't release with an HDMI port, the HDD for the PS3 is upgradable with laptop HDDs, value, XBOX 360 were breaking left right and center, and lastly the games that came out around the same time would have dominated.

Imagine Killzone 2 coming out along side Halo 3 or Froza Motorsport 3 with Gran Turismo 5, the one year head start makes it seem that Microsoft is dishing out the games faster.

Because the 360 and PS3 didn't launch at the same time, we don't know if the sales would have been exactly the same so we can't say with certainty that the PS3 would have outsold the 360. The numbers aren't from the same period and if they had launched at the same time things might have been different.

So let's look at the numbers when they were head to head from the point where the PS3 launched worldwide. Oh, would you look at that. Since the PS3 and 360 have been head 2 head, the PS3 has sold more consoles. Fancy that.

They got beat in NPD last month, the PS3 is embarassing them in Japan weekly (PS3 sold something like 30,000 last week in Japan and 360 sold 3000), and in Europe PS3 has a 1 million lead. MS forgets that the PS3 is now affordable and on par price wise with the elite. Not only that, the PS3 has way more value and much more reliable. On top of this the PS3 has seen 4 major AAA exclusives this year with U2 a shoe in for GOTY09 and tie with Mario Galaxy as the highest rated exclusive game this gen.

If MS are relying on MWF2 then they are sorely mistaken. The battle for both Sony and MS this holiday season is for new console owners or console owers from other camps.

MW2 as i mentioned earlier will be the 4th COD entry with COD4 selling 14 million at least. I doubt that MWF2 will get much more new people to buy consoles let alone a x360. Why?. COD4 is a shooter. All in all MS is facing the reality, their lead was base on a year head start and price cuts like in late 2008. Now that the PS3 is more affordable to the masses, MS has no incentive to compensate for the low quality hardware, pay for online play, and the abscence of exclusives, which makes a 360 for multiplats and Halo and Gears, while the PS3 is good for Multiplats, KZ2, Uncharted 1 and 2, Ratechet and clank, Demons Souls, MGS4, inFamous, LBP, etc all of those exclusives that are not available elsewhere. For them to say that the PS3 will end up third as always it just shows they are butt hurt due to the slim success, a success that their $199 arcade model did not enjoy. MS are sore losers with lots and lots of money, i sold my 360 because MS treat gamers like idiots and is only focused on profit (ex: Halo ODST price tag and the HDDs).
Even if the PS3 ends up third, for me is the best console to this date. I had them all, the Wii the 360 the PS3; and one by one they went out of my house except the PS3, this is my personal taste but is more than justified.

In Short, MS has already shown that their tactics are not long term, while Sony has steadily sold 10 million consoles per year and it keeps getting better for them without rushing price cuts nor responding to the competition moves.

Fact of the matter is, MS is already getting demolished in Japan on a weekly basis. FFXIII comes out December 17th in Japan. That's the end of the 360 in Japan. And if that doesn't manage to finish it off, then Dragon Quest X on the Wii will.

Its funny, for a company that is so against the negative ads against their OS from Mac, they have no issue in slinging mud against others. I think what we see here results from the fact that for the first time in years Microsoft has competition. They had almost no real competition in the OS market and despite Mac's blustering, they still own the vast majority of the OS market.

Now with the consoles, they lost out to PS 2 and put their focus on the Xbox 360. I live near Seattle and was covering a press function where a Microsoft employee told me that the pending PS 3 was no real threat as it was all cutting edge parts that do not work with one another and that PS 3 systems had been catching on fire during testing and this is what the delay was.

So, after a b ad experience with the original Xbox, namely one year after release, I went out to buy a console with a gift card that was given to us for a promotion. The system would not even operate nor open out of the box. I waited a bit over a year when the 360 came out and got two systems. One for me, one for my father in law. My new system red ringed 7 days after I got it, his took 6 months.

In contrast, my PS 3 was sent to me about 10 days after the launch, it is the original 60 Gig system. To this day, not one error, not one glitch ever.

I always thought that Microsoft was so intent on being first to market to grab the lead, they tended not to overlook system issues and instead focused on slinging mud.

I remeber the big issue about the unit price when it shipped. I did a radio segment and article where I took a base Xbox 360 unit. By the time you added the Hard Drive, a Wifi Kit, and the external HD player, it was more than the PS 3 and had 40 Gig less on the HD.

the wifi adapter, how could i forget that. The controllers are priced fine. In fact I prefer controllers with swappable batteries. With PS3 you have to connect the short cabled controllers to the console to charge, or just stop playing till they charge back up. I have a crap load of rechargeable AA batts, I NEVER have to stop playing or sit on top of the console because of a dead battery. I just pop in a fresh pair.

MS wants the world to just look at the US numbers because they know they can no longer compete elsewhere. My guess is MS does have a chance to sell a bit more during the holiday period in the US, but not by much. But MS will focus all of their spin to just the US and take the spotlight away from the fact that the PS3 most likely will start consistently outselling it overall worldwide.

MS has the US and the UK, but with Sony clearly winning everywhere else, and most likely matching the UK and US, it's only a matter of time before the PS3 matches the overall install base of the 360.

I'm loving my PS3 , I think Sony's momentum is great for us in terms of customer base and increased sales potential for our games, and UC2 is definitely my GOTY thus far, but the rhetoric on this site is amazing.

If you read the comments on this thread, you'd think MS is in some sort of horrible position and they will never sell another console again. We've only been able to see the impact of the slim for ONE MONTH. We saw this same sort of impact after MGS4s release AND MS has had genuinely amazing holiday sales year over year that have surprised all of us.

Be a smart fanboy, please. Use logic. Enjoy the Sony momentum, but be cautiously optimistic and not brazen...it will help the debate on this site be a little more civil and realistic.

if you aren't a Halo or Forza fan, you pretty much have no incentive to buy a 360. and if you ARE a Halo or Forza fan, then chances are you already bought a 360 YEARS AGO when Halo 3 and Forza 2 came out.

sequels don't tend to sell consoles like new IPs do.

the reason why Halo 3 pushed so many 360 consoles sales wise is because it was the FIRST Halo on the new Xbox 360. fans flocked.

in the same way MGS4 pushed PS3s. MGS4 was the FIRST MGS on the PS3.

the reason why Uncharted 2 is pushing consoles, is because at the time Uncharted 1 hit, the PS3 was WAY out of the price range of most consumers, and it was during a year when the gaming media was constantly chanting "the PS3 has no good games worth the price tag" like a mantra to the point where people thought it was true (up until recently, i was arguing back and forth with an old friend who was adamant that the PS3 had no games. he wrote me last week saying he regretted selling his PS3, because of games like Demon's Souls, Uncharted, Ratchet, etc, and he didn't have anything to play on his 360, and future prospects were looking slim).

Uncharted 2 is both critically and commercially acclaimed, and married to the new $299 PS3 price tag, it is pushing units.

games like Left4Dead 2 won't sell consoles like Left4Dead did, because fans have picked up a 360 for the first.

i bought my 360 for Fable 2 (the first Fable on the new console), and Mass Effect. i'm not going to buy a new 360 when Fable 3 and Mass Effect 2 come out (well, if the one i have doesn't die on me, i won't).

Sony understands that you need new, exciting IPs to keep the fire under your console burning while still catering to the fans that got you to three consoles in the first place by producing new installments to their favorite series.

GT5 and GoW3 will sell PS3's because they are the first PS3 iterations of those franchises. GT5 Prologue sold because it was a taste of GT5. the full blown title will draw fans in DROVES.

on top of those established franchises, Sony has been constantly introducing new IPs all generation. some have been successful (ie, Uncharted, Resistance, Motorstorm, Little Big Planet, Demon's Souls, inFAMOUS, etc), while others have, unfortunately, been under-appreciated (ie, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, etc).

a healthy mix of classic franchises and new IPs are a NECESSITY of a successful console.

it is why Nintendo and MS didn't do as well as they could have last gen: Nintendo coasted on Mario and Zelda and Metroid the entire generation, with new IPs that just failed to resonate with a vast number of fans (notable exceptions include Animal Crossing and Pikmin). MS had a hit with Halo and decided that that was enough, and they didn't need to invest in more (Fable wasn't as acclaimed as people think it was, and it received quite a bit of backlash after all the broken promises of Peter Molyneux).

Sony, on the other hand, took what Nintendo established by having a stable of classic exclusives (ie, Gran Turismo, God of War, Jak, Ratchet, Sly Cooper, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, etc), and then BUILT on it with new IPs from the very same, reliable developers (Uncharted, Resistance, inFAMOUS, The Last Guardian, etc), and even re-invigorated OLDER, dismissed franchises with quality new installments (ie, Warhawk, Wipeout HD, and Killzone 2, with Syphon Filter and Twisted Metal PS3 on the way).

in short, Sony KNOWS how to make a games console that appeals to people not because of a few features (ie, LIVE, cross game chat, or Twitter and Facebook support), or one big game that is associated with the console, but because of the GAMES. that would be Plural, not Singular.

we are GAMERS. not sales analysts. not stockholders. not PR Reps. GAMERS. we didn't buy our console so we can stare at sales numbers. i bought my console for the games. and it's looking like MS burned out it's stable of games, while REFUSING to build up new development houses to keep the momentum going. now they are trying to hang onto 3rd party multi-plats like they are exclusives, while the PS3 exclusive library just grows and grows.

Halo can't do it all. and even Gears is no longer a system seller (Gears 1 sold as many 360's as it could. Gears 2 sold to the fans of Gears 1. Gears 3 will sell to the fans of Gears 1 and 2. i doubt it will sell many new 360s. same with Mass Effect 2).

Sony has games hitting every month for the next 6 months or more. we've already received 3 of the most impressive video games of the year in the month of October ALONE (Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, and Ratchet: ACIT). next month is God of War Collection (which will no doubt entice many a PS2 owners to the PS3).

who's the "Delaystation" now? the PS3 has released no less than 6 high profile games this year (Killzone 2, MLB: The Show, inFAMOUS, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, and Ratchet), and the 360 has released Halo 3:ODST, and Forza 3. even the PSN has been delivering awesome games all year (ie, Fat Princess, Shatter, Wipeout expansions, Trine, etc).

Microsoft has to learn that it's the games that get people excited about owning a console, not their constant reassurance that they are "beating" Sony.

in the end, i don't care who is first, second, or last, as long as i get some damn good games. Sony is delivering on that part for me personally, while the only new game i've bought for my 360 this year was Shadow Complex.

as a PS3 and Xbox 360 owners, i want good games on both. so far, i've bought Shadow Complex this year on the 360. i'm not a Halo fan, so Halo 3: ODST does nothing for me. i'm not a big racing fan, so Forza 3 does nothing for me. what ELSE has the 360 released this year that's been worth a pick up? Star Ocean? that series hasn't been good since the PS1 days. Ninja Blade? no thank you.

as for the PS3, it's simply a fact that i've bought more PS3 games this year than 360 games. it will be different for each person, but the truth is i spent more on PS3 exclusives than 360 exclusives this year. last year was the same. 2007 was the same. so, for ME, the Playstation 3 has been delivering quality games for the past 3 years.

the BIG DIFFERENCE is that the 360's lineup is slowing to a trickle, where there's only one or two major releases a year, usually sequels (ie, Gears 2 and Fable 2 of last year, and Halo 3: ODST and Forza 3 of this year).

Sony mixes it up with new IPs and sequels on a regular, yearly basis, and each of those new IPs and sequels has a standard of quality i've yet to see MS match.

Microsoft can throw millions at advertising campaigns for Halo, and exclusive DLC for multi-plat games, but they don't seem to want to invest in new studios to produce new games that actually PUSH the Xbox 360 beyond what the tired Unreal Engine 3 has been doing.

if it wasn't for the fact that Fable 3, Mass Effect 2, Crackdown 2, and Alan Wake were hitting next year, i'd sell my 360.

there's ALWAYS a reason to keep a console around, or to own more than one console.

i can't imagine what it must have been like this year for a 360 only owner. having to wait 10 months before a worthwhile game came out, and even THAT was an expansion pack. god knows what non-Halo and non-racing fans are doing with their 360s.

fortunately for me, i have my PS3 to keep me busy during the down times, and vice versa (i also use my PS3 to play my PS2 games during slow periods, since i have a back catalog of PS2 games i still haven't beaten yet).

sending out their 360 when they red ring/E74 anymore. they just throw them away and buy an arcade to replace it rather than wait for the repair. I haven't met ANY 360 owners in the flesh that haven't had the console fail, and usually fail more than 3 times. One guy got so mad with dealing with MS repair center that he took his 360 and smashed it in the street.
Now, I really don't care and don't believe when someone on the Internet says that they have a launch 360 and play it every day for hours and it NEVER failed on them.
If every honest person I have met in the flesh has had the 360 fail on them some faceless clown MS apologist saying that the 360 is reliable defies reality, and I would have to make the conclusion that the person in question is a Liar.

I never heavily used my launch 360 or the subsequent "replacements" in the manner in which alot of hardcore users run them. maybe not turned on for weeks at a time and when on only running it for about 3 to 5 hrs every few days, when work and the important things of life get in the way. and STILL I have had THREE 360's FAIL on me. all well ventilated with an 80mm fan sucking hot air away from the console.

That is why when I got the latest 360 replaced from Texas I gathered UP my 360 and all of it's accessories, games, controllers, and battery charger and traded it in for credit toward another PS3.

MS can keep blowing all the smoke they want. The fact remains that many of my friends--including my roommate--that own 360s have been bored out of their minds in 2009 with the lack of releases for the 360. My roommate is a Halo fan but refused to get shafted out of $60 for an add-on.

There's just not much to play on the 360 right now. Which is probably why MW2 preorders are heavily slanted to the 360 and not the PS3.

But whatever, I don't have time to argue. Time to get back to:
