Activision's Kotick: I'd Raise Game Prices Even More

Activision raised a lot of eyebrows last month with the revelation that Modern Warfare 2 will cost £55, but it's not enough for the company's CEO, Bobby Kotick. He wants all your money.

if you are xbox owner buy halo: odst or some other mutli game instead of mw2 until activision drops the price of mw2

if you are a ps3 owner do likewise with mag or uncharted 2 etc

There is a lot of economics around the price of games. If he were to raise prices sales would fall so dramatically it would either brake even, or actually lower revenue.

Activision and Bobby Kotick seem to be on a douche bag roll. First by trying to manipulate Sony into a price drop through the media, then trying to stop the release of Brutal Legend after dropping the game themselves, then raising the price of MW2 in the UK and Europe on top of over charging for there peripheral based games like DJ hero and Tony Hawk.

So now Boby Kotick says if it were up to him he would raise the price of games even further when it is difficult for most gamers to pay the $59.99 that most games cost now(even more in other country's).

Asking Sony to lower the price of the PS3 (something that is well worth its current price) when it already losing a lot of money and Activision going on to raise prices for there games and peripherals just seems a little hypocritical(A lot hypocritical).

We need to flood the forums, letting Activision know how we are not happy with what they are doing lately and speak with our wallets by not purchasing there products. EA learned a lesson and wasn't nearly as bad as Activision is being.

No, a_little_girl is right. To prevent this kind of attitude and price hikes in our games, all we'd have to do is wait a couple of weeks to buy the MW2. If they saw the reaction from consumers of a price hike for no other reason than 'the game is good' they'd stfu and we'd never hear their sh!t until the next gen when they raise it $10 anyway. The fact is that we should not buy it, but people are going to anyway.

If you pay extra money for this game, or support that practice, you are basically screaming for big business to stick it in you. People will start charging extra for sequels because they are "proven" and new IPs will have to lower their prices to compete. We would be actively killing creativity. That's a pretty extreme vision of the future, but it could happen if you allow stuff like this to pass. I just don't want to pay more if a company thinks their game is better. People would flock to more expensive games because they think that game is going to be awesome. At that point publishers would release crap games at inflated prices just to snag a few thousand idiot consumers. You know what you have then? Kane & Lynch for $90.

I won't be purchasing this game in the first few weeks, despite the fact that I live in the US. It is an easier decision for me because I can't play online, but I wouldn't put up with this sh!t regardless.

Kotick is a complete douche being so hypocritical over the PS3 price and then wanting to make Activision's games even dearer than the unfairr and unjustifiable UK only price hike-I can't believe the guy isn't in the crap wuth his company as he seems to want to make them hated.

Thing is not everyone, not even a quarter of gamers wil ever even know he's said this stuff. Most average UK gamers won't even know that they're paying more than the rest of the world. They may even just think that MW2 is the first game out at that price and that EVERY game will be doing it as well anyway. That's why Activision have repeatedly got away with fleecing the UK gamer. The full band GH WT package retailed at nearly double the US price in the UK and they justified it by saying the "tax structures are different" but that only added up to less than 25% of the increase(being a 5% duty and 17.5% VAT)-so they lie as well.

Our problem, and will be all our problem when they get away with the UK hike, is that most gamers are totally ignorant of the fatcs. Practically everyone who I showed the US prices for the GHST gand gundle in the US were dunbfounded-they had NO idea we UK gamers were being fleeced like this. I'll again make it my business to spread the holy word of Kotick to as many people as I can as I find his attitude beyond distasteful when the UK has suffered more than any other EU country in terms of job losses and economic slowdown this recession.

In an ironic twist, what would really be funny is if Tretton or somebody comes out and says "Hey Kotick, drop your prices or we're just not going to let you publish on our systems anymore". Let's see how Kotick reacts to his own medicine. What I would find even more hilarious, to further the threat, Sony also threatens to pull all Sony Music from Guitar Hero and to fully back Rock Band. That could end very very badly for Activision.

Somebody needs to put them in their place though. I highly doubt it's going to be consumers though being as how mainstream consumers (the biggest target audience) will just eat up anything they put out not at all caring for their business tactics. Hell I was actually talking about this stuff with a guy I know lately, and was urging him to get MW2 used (cause he plans to get it no matter what). Even after telling him all the stuff that Activision has been pulling as of late, the guy just responded "I don't care. I want the game. I'm getting it the day it comes out. Before PS3 launch, rumors swirled about blu ray games being 100$.....As a PS supporter (since ps1) i said ill gladly buy a X360 and do my gaming exclusively there...... yet some of my friends actually said they would pay for it.

Raiinstorm81 yes the consumer has control but looking at how publishers work and some of the pay some of these developers are getting is pretty high, some deserve it yet some do not.

I guess what I'm trying to say is a lot of work often times more work goes into making a console game due to the specs of the system. It is very expensive and time consuming to get the most out of systems. Then on top of this we have a rising bar, artificially rising as other companies keep advancing their graphics are even art on some games. What is funny is it takes loads of money to do these things. The easiest place to do such things are the PC yet gamers expect PC gaming and the consoles to be the same these days.

Seriously look at the sales of some of these high end games and you see number close to last gen's sales numbers... yet the cost of development keeps going up. Gamers want more and more eye candy and gamers keep hyping a fueling the graphic whore console war rather than the fun games.

The customer decides what imaginary unicorn to chase and the devs and publisher fight over who can make the best unicorn. It so happens you guys choose graphic solely... the most expensive part of HD gaming. Most gamers did not choose game play or replay or just plane old fun and imagination.

Not this douche bag it asking you to foot the bill for this game and the other games they did not make money on so that no one has to get fired.

The bigger your company the easier it is to make HD games yet the bigger your company be bigger your pay roll is. HD gamers have to make a decision do you want bigger and better games or do you want affordable games.

If MW2 does not sale well then you forward to activision moving to make way more games on the Wii. Here the production cost is way lower and they can almost make the same game play.

So what I am saying is can the HD gamer support HD gaming? Back in the day neogeo games cost $200 and I still bought a few of them and loved them. Yet I had the income to do so. Is HD gaming to rich for gamers? Most of you bailed on PC gaming because it was too expensive right? Upgrading every six months was pretty expensive.

The same thing is happening here and you will see more of it because next gen is coming. Some one has to pay for it.

I agree.....to a certain degree. If Activision consistently made great titles not the tons of mediocre movie games and once and awhile great franchise maybe i could try to understand. Alot of devs IMO have yet to justify the 60$ price tag and create a game outside the mold of last generation. Instead we get games that couldve been done on xbox or ps2 aside from graphics. We are graphic whores as you said we have to pay for HD gaming which is why i thought game prices rose from last generation. I enjoy games aside from graphics like the pixeljunk eden & monsters, Braid, World of Goo, We Love Katamari, Okami, but mainly i need some eye candy in my games of today. Its 2009 graphics should be a part of the natural evolution of retail games. The devs want to bring us more realistic worlds as well.

The average gamer wants COD and The Tick (Bobby Kotick) knows it so he's going to try to suck us all dry. Activision can afford the losses from the other lackluster games when Guitar Hero and Call Of Duty will sell EVERY YEAR not to mention World of Warcraft.

yeah, you got a point. if the first MW and WAW didn't sell like crack, we probably wouldn't be getting milked as much. i think the battlefield series is infinitely better than any cod ever made and because of their less than stellar sales, it doesn't make them a bunch of greedy fuks to raise their prices. usually when a game isn't a huge commercial success, the developers try their best to greatly improve the sequel and that's what BC2 looks like. since MW was great as it was, activision don't feel like they have to press on to make a much better sequel but rather raise the prices.

i don't see why activision is doing this though. microsoft could've done this with halo 3 as that sold more on an exclusive console but you don't see it overpriced.

Reading a few post , another funny thing would be how people thinl IW are nice guys .

They arent ... at all . They went along and even started the "let's overcharges maps (with half of the pack always being already existing SP maps converted to multi) in dlcs" trend .

I think his plan is to raise the price in Europe and keep the price the same in the US for a reason. After the game releases and sells 10 mil. copies he can declare the price hike a success, while completely ignoring the fact tah most of them were sold in America where it costs the normal price.

Alot of people who buy COD have no idea about the price hike unless they see it. Im sure that even casual gamers would be less likely to buy the game if they saw it costing more than the other games. The boycott does not really need to last long. you are wright, most people who say they will boycott prob will end up going out and getting it...

but if half or a quarter of the people just hold off for the first few weeks that alone will be making a statement.

I agree with you 100%, but my point is that the percentage of people that are boycotting and the percentage of people that will ACTUALLY follow through won't even be that high to make a dent in sales.

This is what I think will happen. Most will want to wait for it used, right? While they wait, all these rave reviews will come out and you know damn well everyone will be reading up on these. Most will breakdown and finally go out and buy it due to just that. On TOP of that you got all the boosters(guns/perks) and stat whores(K:D ratios) to worry about. Alot of people don't want to wait and wait for the game cause by the time they finally get it, everyone is already prestiged and have the advantage. You see, I work at a game store and I run into alot of people that won't play CoD online cause they simply got into it too late and everyone already knows the maps and glitches, so they want to get the new one and keep up with everyone.

Bottom line is that we should send a message, but it'll be hard to resist. Believe me, I own both PS3 and 360 and do not want to start paying $75 a game or more. It's killing me enough at $60. even with this on the internet this information won't penetrate enough of the gamning community to make a big enough negative impact. xbox fanboys and ps3 fanboys will still buy this game, after all this because most won't know about how their attitude is.

most peeps that come on the internet for gaming news are the more "hardcore" crowd. the only thing we can do as a small minority when it comes to the gaming community as a whole is get the word out.

a good many of us have psn, and xbox live to use for this. a lot on my live list are hardcore, but some are not that think modern warfare 2 will be the 2nd coming of christ. it is up to us to go into those game lobbies and such on psn and live and tell the "truth" about how activision feels about gamers as a whole.

i am not one to ever say boycott something, but when it comes to this i have to say we as gamers need to stand up against this kind of treatment. even though this for now is only effecting uk gamers, if this game sells really well at the "new" price point it will effect gamers that are located anywhere on the globe, eventually.

Between Vivendi and Electronic Arts, you really don't have much wiggle room. They are the two biggest players in the business.

Everybody hates them, but they own the rights to publish many titles that people like. So, what do we, as consumers do?

People can boycott the companies, but what about the developers that are working under their umbrella, that just want to make good games that people want to play, that make them a solid profit?

I think that since Blizzard got so big, that they created a union (unholy?) with Vivendi... well, their corporate interests are becoming problematic to their artistic and just plain have fun vision.

All these companies are becoming too big for their britches and once you start becoming beholden to investors, shareholders, and the boards that oversee it all... well, you get this crap.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for capitalism and being in the business of making money, but you have to draw a line somewhere. When one game can cost 15 - 20 percent of the money it took to buy a console... Yikes.

The industry at large needs to become streamlined and simplified. If you have a team of 100+ people working on a game and it still takes you 5+ years to make the damn thing, you need to rethink your internal design and implementation strategies. Again, I've beat this drum before, you should not need 10 or 20 million + dollars to make a good 'AAA' title.

Yes, the industry has gotten bigger and more complex, but the tools used to work within that more complex system, should (and do) defray that complexity.

Particularly, those developers that have been making games for 10+ years, should have the design, implementation, debug, and polish cycle down pat.

Not only that, but then there are the 'suits' who sometimes delay launches (or speed them up), for the balance sheets of their parent companies. It's a lose-lose system... it's not healthy.

Support your customer base and you win big. It's that simple.

When companies own other companies and those companies that are owned are doing poorly, so the larger company has to force other subsidiary companies to adjust how they work, so that the parent company can write off the crap on their books... it just becomes a giant unnecessary mess.

You don't need an MBA to understand it's a poor business model. The only reason it works, is because you can offset failure of one branch with the success of another... many times at the expense of someone else.

If you support the customer 100 percent you win every time. EVERY TIME. Loyal customers will throw their money at you, as long as you don't take unhealthy advantage of that relationship, you can't go wrong as a business.

This generation there haven't been many games worth buying at the launch price. The majority of games, even if they're good games, don't deserve anything over a rental considering that every aspect of said game can be beaten in a weekend's time. The few fantastic games this gen (with replay value) tend to also be the shortest ones.

Games were already expensive at $50.00 and the $60.00 price never helped even before the economy went downhill. Renting and used games are definitely the way to go in my opinion, because there is no way in hell I'm buying a video game that's over $50 anymore.

Even though most people could not afford the ps3 at that point, there was no denying that it was actually worth that asking price. it was worth every penny even then.

If i had a product at a proven-profitable fixed price whose predecessor had done well and is shaping up to be the 'Product of the Year', i wouldn't have raised the price at the last minute. And i most definitely wouldn't follow that up by announcing to my customers around the world that i'd like to raise the price even more.

Just enjoy all the great games coming out from other publishers, don't buy MW2 just yet. wait a few months show Activision by low sales that the higher price was a mistake. then buy your copy of MW2 used. or deeply discounted. I prefer used because you can stick it to Kotick and still enjoy the game.

Or once they start selling the game at a "discount" to boost sales get it then.
