80GB PlayStation 3 to Be Discontinued In Japan

The 20GB, 40GB and 60GB versions of the PS3 have been discontinued. According to this, it looks like the 80GB PlayStation 3 is next.

This notice is apparently from retailer 7-Eleven (7-Eleven sells video games in Japan) and stats that pre-orders for the Black, White and Silver 80GB PS3 will cease on Sunday, August 9 at 10am.

The reason listed is "For the manufacturer".

Dude u should not feel that way at all, there is no PS3 as good as the 60 gig. Sure we paid more, but they do so much that the new striped ones dont. I bet you could sell it on ebay and get your 350$ if you feel that strong about it.

Sorry, but what are you on bud? The 60gb is the best model out there. I have had mine since day one and love it. it is the only one that has all the features originally released and plays all games BC. Just dump in a 320gb HDD and call it all good.

My 60GB model failed with the yellow light code, and Sony replaced it fast and without incident. Dang, I'd say it was new when I got it. I also have an 80GB model with no PS2 support. It looked dang near new when I got it. It even had stickers over the touch parts that power on and eject on my console to prevent fingerprints. People speak about Sony not giving to us older console owners, yet they gave to me very well. Sony does good on it's console owners, my experience shows that.

We're past the point I think where we're uncertain that a new PS3 is coming. It's a matter of when and how slim is it!

Not only this that tells you there really is a PS3 slim, but also the fact that that there was even a bundle with games such as MGS4 with Killzone 2.

The main reason why Sony would even do that I can think of is to clear the shelves aswell.

...if a PS3 slim drops it will cost $399 and the 40-80 gigs will go down to $299-$350 range. Now I'm starting to think some REALLY big announcements will happen at TGS and I'm more certain about what one of them will be.

Part of me is thinking the PS3 slim will be the same price as the current SKUs but I'm leaning more towards it being bundled with a big fall of spring game.

Or as the OP said a larger HD with the current SKU is en route.

Everyone knows Sony said they were going to sell 13 million consoles this fiscal year right? Well with the current game line up for the rest of the year I doubt it'd be enough to hit that mark. As much as I know I'm going to enjoy Uncharted 2, MAG, and Ratchet and Clank I seriously doubt it'll be enough for Sony to reach their goal.

Knowing this it means Sony has to have something else lined up for the later year with prices or the model of PS3s they have. Right now all we can do is speculate, but as we all know Sony didn't play all of its cards at E3 where Microsoft did.

While 360 fans are playing Halo: ODST, Forza 3 and L4D 2, I could care less. I'll be buying Uncharted 2 for the PS3 besides those. And Brutal Legend, Modern Warfare II, Assassins Creed 2 among others, for the 360 ofcourse, because 98% of all multiplats run and look best on the 360 added the premium online service the only experience on the PS3 to enjoy are exclusive single player ones.

Where is the year of the PS3 in 2009? Delaystation 3 again, Heavy Rain, Mag, GT5 amongst others to 2010?

The difference between the models are not just hard disk capacity but more important ones such as:

* Smaller manufacturing for example. 65nm cell & RSX smaller mobo, lower production costs
* Evolution of cooling (liter fan sink) and component life span = less YLOD

The improvements in HDD capacity is so it looks more appealing for the average customer and even better with price cuts. If I was a new customer it would be cheapest PS3 i could get hold of e.g. 40GB model and get a 320GB HDD.

Look at these ignorant little bots trolling around. A Slim/ and or a price cut will destroy the 360. The 360 only sells in the U.S. while the PS3 has appeal throughout the world. If you say xbox in Europe or Japan a lot of people won't know what the hell you're talking about. If you say PlayStation then there's a lot of people who'll immediately know about it.
