Blu-ray player sales rose 72% in Q1 '09

According to the March update of The NPD Group's retail tracking report, sales of standalone BD players (not including PS3 consoles) in the USA during the first quarter of 2009 increased 72 percent over the same period in 2008. Additionally, consumer surveys showed increased awareness and intention to buy.

During the quarter, over 400,000 standalone players were sold in the USA, for dollar sales of $107.2. The average selling price of a standalone BD player fell nearly 34 percent from $393 dollars in Q1 2008 to $261 in Q1 2009, the report shows.

The March update to the Blu-ray Report also showed that overall U.S. consumer awareness of the BD format hit the 90 percent mark in the past six months. Purchase intent for Blu-ray set-top boxes also rose slightly in recent tracking surveys, with 6 percent of respondents saying they would be "extremely or very likely" to buy in the next six months, compared with 5 percent who responded similarly in the August 2008 report.

hay5466d ago

Haha, yeah, it is doomed. All those people supporting BD just don't get it yet. /sarcasm

Venomish5466d ago

teh bluray is teh dooooommed
teh expertz say its dooooooooooommed
bluray is teh dead
hd-dvd, digital downloooooooooads ftw zomg lmao

theKiller5466d ago

DVD is just fine and digital download is taking over(NOT)

darthv725466d ago

1500 is the model I am wanting to get. The price is lower now but seeing as I have a ps3, I can wait for it to go down a little more (under $150). When the price is right I will be able to put one in the family room and retire the ps3 to where it needs to be (game room). Watching movies on it is nice and will be even nicer to do on a dedicated player.

I dont have many bd movies (3 only) so I am watching dvd's upscaled. Dont hold that against me as I think it is a fine upscaler (better than 360 hddvd drive). At some point there will be a transition from dvd to bd in my house.

Could you imagine how this would be selling if the economy was good and didn't have 8% of Americans unemployed? This is doing really good for the way the current economy is.

ThanatosDMC5466d ago

There's a lot of good bluray movies for $10 at Fry's Electronics right now.

I bought, both underworld movies, black hawk down, mask of zorro, curse of the golden something, something else, something else, and finally Event Horrizon.

Only Event Horrizon was the one that cost $22.

Anon19745466d ago

I thought everyone wanted digital downloads? Forget for a second that Video On Demand services have been available for almost a decade now and haven't even dented sales of physical media - when is this huge shift away from people wanting a physical copy of their movies supposed to happen?
Dammit, I want to start waiting an hour or more for my lesser quality movie to download now!

labaronx5466d ago

all great points. On demand has been pretty much the same since 2000 if I can remember but nothing beats physical media.

This should finally put an end to the blu ray is dead articles. But i also would like to see digital distribution succeed as it is my perfered choice for music.

kurochi5466d ago

@2.2

Counter piont, you don't need digital distribution to succeed if you just want music, you can use BT for that...... although it is illegal..... @_@

theKiller5466d ago

u got that right!!! only richy kids with richy families spend money on music online and some idiots!!!

most the pop starts dont deserve a million Dollar!!! they r idiots and just do what they r told to do and suddenly they r pop starts!!!!

bumnut5466d ago (Edited 5466d ago )

Are you saying that everyone who buys music legally online is an idiot?

Defectiv3_Detectiv35466d ago (Edited 5466d ago )

Well, not all of us listen to pop stars like hannah montana and miley cyrus, so you'll have to excuse me if I'm foolish enough to think its better to support up and coming artists.

Most artists don't make anywhere near 1mil dollars. Sounds like you need to turn off the american idol and discover some underground.

kurochi5466d ago

@2.6

Up and coming artist can also be found on BT. You, my friend, seem to be a "music-snob". Just because you support individualistic artists, doesn't mean everyone else that listens to mainstream music are any worse off than you.

BTW - I always thought Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus are the same person (not that I care)?

BRG90005466d ago

Miley Cyrus is the actress/singer and Hannah Montana is the character she plays on her TV series. Geez, I'm sick of such uninformed posters on n4g. :P

lol you guys are silly, hopefully more and more movies will come in bluray, like the star wars series.

joydestroy5466d ago

dude i've been wanting that for so long...

Godmars2905466d ago

I'm *STILL* waiting for Aliens... :(

DaTruth5466d ago (Edited 5466d ago )

Aliens would be awesome in bluray. But it better not be the edited version without the auto turrets. I'm not sure why they edited that out, it was one of the best parts.

Oh and Bu, bu, bu, but, but all these buts have teh anti bluray boys butt hurt.

eagle215466d ago (Edited 5466d ago )

About to order more at amazon now actually. (Ghostbusters Blu-ray is $19.99 pre-order by the way.) :)

Anon19745466d ago

$19.99, you say? You know, Ghostbusters is one of those movies I've always loved but haven't owned since VHS days. Given that I'd have to dig through my garage to find a VHS player - methinks I might just need to pre-order this one.

locos855466d ago

Amazon is one of my fave places to buy blu-ray movies. I only buy huge blockbusters, so I havent used it in a while. Will check this out for sure.

DaTruth5466d ago

You guys should hold out in case they bundle it with the game! Unlikely, but it would be a shame!

Defectiv3_Detectiv35466d ago

Just imagine all the money MS would have made if they would have actually tried and support HD DVD the right way! At the very least it would have been enough to offset Sony's gains.

MS must be kicking themselves in the @ss right now.

EKWB reportedly plagued with financial disarray many gaming pc's left without parts

EK Cooling allegedly has slipped itself into a hot soup of seemingly endless financial woes, where it has not paid its staff, suppliers, and contractors for many months as the company is facing liquidity problems and a surplus of inventory left unsold, stuck in the warehouse for a more extended period. Gamers Nexus investigated these claims made by former and current personnel, where he found trails of unpaid bills lasting as long as three to four months and unpaid raises that accumulated for almost a year.

EK Water Blocks has two entities—a Slovenian-based headquarters and a US-based subsidiary, EK Cooling Solutions. Steve narrated the series of events in detail, stating that the company was reportedly irresponsible and negligent regarding payment. Consequently, partners and employees are forced to share the burden of alleged mismanagement. It all begins with its extensive range of products, leading to a surplus of goods. EK has over 230 water blocks, 40 liquid cooling kits, 85 reservoirs, 40 pumps, 73 radiators, and 212 miscellaneous accessories.

Yes this is not about video games directly but indirectly this will impact the pc gaming/workstation space hard.

This company is massive one of two in the water cool space so if it goes poof then thousands out there have no spare parts or half built computers.

SO yeah i know not about a video game but think of it as amd leaving the pc space but this is ekwb that could be leaving water cooling in the pc space

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

jznrpg7h ago

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

darthv727h ago

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.

Fallout 3's Reveal Led To Death Threats And Bethesda's First Security Guard

The artist behind Fallout 4’s Deathclaw reveals just how bad things got back when Bethesda took over the series

anast8h ago

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood8h ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

VenomUK5h ago

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.

gold_drake4h ago

there is no "but". the hell lol
you dont send death threats, period.
