PSP2 coming before Christmas - confirmed

Pocket Gamer has got the scoop first-hand from an insider source that the PSP2 is in development and will be with us before Christmas 2009 - and it's new feature list (including a sliding touchscreen and dual analogue sticks) is set to give the iPhone a serious challenge.

It's not been confirmed that the PSP4000 development was stepped up, is what that paragraph is saying. That's what's believed to have happened. The source confirms the PSP2, though.

an inside source is not confirmation. an inside source is still classified as a rumor. even the article doesn't say confirmed (goodness sake the article even says "not confirmed") so how can you add confirmation. how can they release a new psp early when they can't even confirmed that development has been stepped up? this is just plain wrong. sorry to be pedantic but i think this title is misleading.

It looks like a rumor to me, those pics they are using are old too. They are mock ups from some dude that does not even work for sony, saw them over a year ago.

The only two advancements that "may come" tot he PSP will be a camera and a touch screen. The second being very doubtful, but probable. I also say they will get rid of the UMD slot and go all Digital Downloads. Can't say it will look any different though. All these rumors make me wonder though, why would they put out another PSP if the current one is selling well.

Right now, I can't see Sony dropping some kind of physical media for the PSP, may it be the PSP2 or the PSP-4000. Sony is still struggling at getting one PSOne classic a month on the PS Store, the UMD legacy is also coming very slow. Also, they still have the PS2/3 on the shelves, and making a new handhelds which would not use game retailers for most of it's games is like asking for your products to be put in the backstore.

Oh, and by the way Sony, if you're really going with a huge touchscreen, ask Apple on how to make a screen, the PSP's current one is easy to scratch, way too easy compared to the one of my iTouch, and I don't think buying a protective screen should be mandatory in this day and age.

I love my 1001 model PSPs, but I'm always open for a new console, not some dumb update that forces me to shell out another 200 dollars. As a fully payed up member of the NUJ(in the UK)I can assure you that having a reliable source that you can't name(for obvious reasons) is one of the basic pros and cons of any good journalist.

IF the PSP2 emerges with the featues outlined then the writer gets kudos from readership AND you'll believe his source(who as he wasn't named will leak info for either cash or motive again)and likely his other sources as a result due to him gaining a nime as a writer to be trusted.

So, yeah , while the "inside source" or " an insider" can often be used by the charlatan it doesn't mean that real trustworthy writer won't have a good source so you can't assume this for certain.

this seems like a believable rumor, don't know about timing though. 2nd analogue stick = hard core games, touchscreen = casual games. If the psp2 has it then it'll surely be the best of both worlds. allow apps and a sdk for any developer, and it'll be unstoppable

iPhone Competition for PSP & DSi? I don't think so!
The iPhone is a gimick, something to occupy the 5 minutes until your train/bus arrives. It is in no way competition for the serious mobile games machines that the PSP and DSi are.

I won't purchase a PSP2 unless it has Bluetooth capabilities. Just imagine using your PSP2 as a secondary controller for your PS3. Even a bluetooth headset so you can listen to your music/movie without disturbing others.

I got all three consoles and both portable video games of this gen and after checking many list of games that will be coming this year all I can say is that Sony rules!

Unfortunetelly I don't see more then one or two uber game coming to each rival of PS3/PSP coming in 2009 but on the other hand I see more then fithteen for the PS3 and more then six great games comign to the PSP.

I just wonder what is going on with Nintendo and Msoft this year.... lack of cool exclusive games...

If you read the article, it says "the touchscreen is slid open as it reveals familiar buttons, D-pads and – praise the Lord of Handhelds – dual analogue controls." And the sources are exactly the same too: "having spoken to an insider source – who's not Dave Perry, but is a developer working on the new hardware" from the article is the same as: "David Perry, pay any attention to the World War II aphorism "Loose Lips Sink Ships"? He's been mouthing off about the PSP. He reckons it'll come out in the autumn:

"I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now, I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me."" from the website of that picture.

I hope PSP2 means a lot more powerful computing/graphics power, not just the current power with another analog stick and a touch screen. It's been 4 years since the psp has been out, I'd hope we can get some much much better graphics by now.
Near 360 level graphics with these proposed/rumored features would actually make me consider getting a portable, I have an iphone but don't care for gaming on it.
