Rumor: Mass Effect Trilogy Coming to PS3

A source close to EA has told Second Story Gamer that Mass Effect 2 and 3 will be available on the PS3 as well as the 360 and PC. Also, according to the source, it is "likely" that EA will port the original game to the PS3, to introduce PS3 owners, who may have missed the original game, to the franchise.

Oblivion sold on PS3 around 1 mln., Fallout 3 already did over 1 mln. on PS3, and will do atleast 500k more, if not 2 mln. LTD in the end.
WHY would they ignore 20 mln.(today) PS3 userbase, and 30-35 mln. by the time of ME2 release? =))

The other thing, that M$ just like with 1st xbox is not in position to lose any exclusive, since their 1st and 2nd party support is weak compared to Sony. :)

It`s more like some Japanese developers will ignore x360 in Japan and make PS3 exclusives like Valkyria Chronicles, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, Quantum Theory, Yakuza 3, Demon`s Soul, next CC game. :)

is BS, but the question still does stand.

1) Both EA AND 2K have said that ps3 is the platform that makes them the most money. People already forgot that fact.
2) I believe that 2k brought bioshock 1 over to ps3 knowing that it wouldn't do that well only because the people that really wanted to play it played it on 360 or PC. BUT, Bioshock 2 is inevitably coming to ps3, which is why they really had no choice but to port the 1st one over, now that those roots are planted, bioshock 2 will sell millions on ps3. So, therefore, if EA is gonna bring ME 2 to ps3, there is no point in doing that if they first do not bring ME 1, to plant the roots. GDC will answer all...
3) EA is creating the huge sports complex for Playstation HOME. I think it's fair to say that they really support the ps3
4) 2K is EA's rival, they are always trying to outdo each other with their sports titles. Since EA couldn't buyout the competition, they are just going to have to settle with competing with them, which means bringing as many games as possible to all off the platforms, including bringin ME to ps3.(remember that bioshock is coming to ps3).

PS3 Bioshock didn't do well because there were 20 other games to buy when it was released. One day I hope to play it but considering PS3's lineup it's not looking good. I bought FC2 at launch and it took me two months to get around to playing it.

Bioware has said from the very start that ME was being made of the 360. Its also a well known fact that bioware is very loyal to MS despite a very low install based compared to the ps2 bioware still made jade empire and kotor exclusively for the xbox. That being said unless ms had some kind of deal in places with bioware before EA bought them out its possible that EA will make bioware port ME to the ps3

I thought Unreal Tournament ran very nicely on the PS3, and proves that the Unreal engine is quite feasible on the PS3.

The examples you cited are valid, too, but should be taken with a grain of salt, as they were older examples of Unreal-based PS3 titles. I think, as you also recognized, Mirror's Edge is a great example of how more recent titles are overcoming any issues they faced earlier on, and if ME2 is being produced with the know-how of today, I can totally see it being on par with the 360 version.

But frankly, I would actually bet on the PS3 version being better if it has HDD installs. I actually played ME1 on the 360 for about 30 hours, then eventually gave up because I got too tired of the elevators. And let's face it: we all know why those elevators were there: to cover up load times. If nothing else, having HDD installs (and yes, I know the 360 can do it now too) would drastically cut down those frustrating moments from this game, and may actually entice me to give ME another try.

....I'm wondering what Bioware has said about their console intentions LATELY! Every time I hear about the debate over this rumor (which, by the way, it's looking more and more likely, and it seems as though some of the 360 fanboys cannot handle that), my mind keeps going back to the 360 UK story and how Bioware was so unhappy that they were taken completely out of context and they made the site post a retraction. That's still relevant to me because it seemed, at least then, that Bioware really didn't want the word "exclusive" being thrown around like that with the ME franchise.

Like I said, Bioware's intentions may have changed since the last time we've heard from them. And even if they do, WHY DO THE 360 FANBOYS CARE?! It won't be like they don't get the game. Remember the Interview with developer Matt Atwood? I think he said it would be 360 exclusive but this time it'll come faster for the PC too (probably the same day as 360). MS started publishing ME2 until Bioware was bought by EA. They gave up the publishing rights under some conditions (most probably staying exclusive, otherwise EA would have made it multiplatform, because I don't think Bioware is really THAT loyal).
All in all we'll see that this rumour is false in march.

Well we don't know exactly which deal Microsoft has made. It could be that the total deal is for the trilogy of Mass Effect. It could be only for Mass Effect 1. One thing is for sure, if MS thinks the IP is important enough for them to keep exclusive, they've secured it.

I guess as the article says: we'll see at GDC soonish. But I bet we won't hear anything about Mass Effect for the PS3 there and it was just a website hits booster for the linked website.

Look i've said it and i'll say it again. Third party exclusives are over and Sony has stated that this gen. Sony will have the upper hand when it comes to exclusives because they have so many first/second party devs. This will play a very big factor in this gen of consoles. Occasionally i want to be able to play games that take advantage of the ps3 and can't be found anywhere else.

Mass Effect trilogy will definitely make it to the ps3 because EA is starting to realize that the ps3 is a sustainable income source. Also the new EA Home Space coming to the ps3 shows that they have a strong relationship with Sony and will provide more multiplats. They are building a community throughout Home and that community will account for most ps3 owners.

If it makes it then the 360 will officially be worth nothing. No exclusives= -consumer appeal, simple maths. Hopefully other devs realize this and make more games mulitiplat e.g SC=Conviction etc etc. with the exception of L4D because honestly the game looks like a turd.

You can't make a buy like that without investors or stock holders knowing about it. It's not every day someone buys somthing from a huge company like Microsoft, and since Microsoft could buy EA 5 times over... well thats how you fail. Publishing rights isn't somthing that is dealt with under the table like back alley drug dealing. Both sides need to come to an agreement and a split would be known. Both parties would have to gain somthing from the deal, and Mass Effect going multiplat doesn't benefit Microsoft. If anything, if Mass Effect went multiplat then you could expect other EA games to go exclusive as part of a deal, or lots of exclusive content that no one else could ever get.

I played through the 360 version once and liked it a lot, but didn't go through it as different classes because I was semi-annoyed with the load times, texture pop-ins, etc. and Call of Duty 4 was just coming out, so I shelved it and went to CoD4. Personally I think all gamers should have a shot at this one. Bioware has been in my top 5 devs for many years. I bought the xbox1 for KOTOR alone and come to think of it I only had one other game and that was Jade Empire. They need to release Dragon Age already can't wait for that one (360/PS3) title. That shows me they do have experience with PS3 system and could have changed their minds about keeping it on the 360. We won't know for sure untile EA or Bioware tell us about it. So until then we can all hope it goes multiplatform so Bioware can make some more cash. After all that is what game company's tend to want after everything is said and done.

Well, I suppose thats true. Frankly the cost and work would definitely be a decisive factor on EA's part if there were to be a port to the PS3. I was just wonderin about future ME's like possibly 2 and 3, and whether they could use a different engine. Assuming that a possible ps3 version was decided upon before production of ME2, then that would definitely ease the development process of both versions. Why not right? New engine, better graphics and performance. Although, this is assuming that they were to use an engine they've already finished developing, like the one used in Dead Space or some other EA internally developed engine.

they bought up the original mass effect.. published by msft and bioware was in contract with msft with mass effect now some argue that the agreement was for the 1st game only or the IP itself. No on knows except msft and bioware but what we all know is that msft holds the rights to the 1st one so I doubt that'll ever to the ps3 and with EA current financial woes I doubt they'll pay msft the money to buy out the contract so I think it's safe to say don't get your hopes up.

The sad thing is, the HDD install for Mass Effect doesn't really work at all well.

Because it's not optomised for it, the improvement is near non-existant, which is what I've noticed with most 360 games I install, the benefeits do not weigh up against the HDD cost.

who in the heck is even gonna have time to think about Mass Effect on PS3 with the likes of Killzone2, Uncharted 2, White Knight Chronicles, DC Online MMO, MAG, inFamous, Demon Souls, Dragon Age: Origins, Alpha Protocol, God of War 3, Quantum Theory, Twisted Metal, Heavy Rain, and Final Fantasy 13 on the horizon (and, in some cases, just around the corner!)? Not to mention, whatever is in the works coming from Team Ico, Incognito, Insomniac, and a bunch Sony's other first and second party studios. I for one do not care about Mass Effect.

i used to own it on my 360, but the technical issues made me hold off until the inevitable PS3 version (framerate issues, load time issues, texture issues, etc).

EA owns Bioware. EA doesn't do exclusives. credible source or not, it's more than likely that the Mass Effect trilogy will come to the PS3.

the main reason why many games were 360 exclusive is because, for 12 months, THERE WAS NO PLAYSTATION 3.

when the PS3 finally DID launch, developers had to learn the new architecture.

as we've seen with games like Unreal Tournament 3 (Unreal Engine 3, by the way), Burnout Paradise, GTAIV, DMC4, Bioshock (another Unreal Engine 3 game)etc, that once a developer learns the machine, they are able to create quality multi-plats.

well, the Playstation 3 is sitting at 20 million or more. MORE than enough of an install base to start turning a profit on.

software attach rates are on the RISE, not the decline. we can't help it that there is currently a recession in the US, and we couldn't buy all the games that released in the months of October and November. hell, i had to pass on quite a few games (Far Cry 2, Dead Space, Valkyria Chronicles, SOCOM: Confrontation, Mirror's Edge, Bioshock, Eternal Sonata, etc - one day i will own you games, believe that), because i just didn't have the cash to burn, and they released so close together i had to make some painful choices last year.

anyway, for a console that is still twice the price of it's competition, the PS3 is doing rather well for itself, and, as we've seen with Ubisoft, 2K, and EA, it makes them more money than the other consoles.

developers/publishers were skittish with the PS2 early on too. complaining about how difficult it was to develop for, and how the install base was limiting profits. after it caught up, and then surpassed the Dreamcast in install base, they came flocking back. just like now with the PS3.

if there is one series out of them all that i'd love to have on my PS3, it's Mass Effect.

i can't imagine what Bioware will be able to do with the ability to cache/install to the HDD (bye bye load times and framerate issues!), and maybe whatever extras they can stuff into a Blu Ray disc (maybe a few extra planets to explore, instead of just scanning them for info?).

even if they don't do ANYTHING other than adjust load times/framerate, that'd be enough for me. like Bioshock, i never beat Mass Effect, although my fiance beat it 3 times (she was addicted to ME for a while, then got tired of it after the 3rd playthrough, because of the technical issues; the framerate dropped to a crawl on one of her games to the point where she couldn't even pause the game to access the save menu so she could save her game and turn off the 360. she ended up having to turn it off, and lost her progress. that pretty much sealed it for her, and she's now waiting for the PS3 version of the game).

Before even considering this, it comes down to who the IP belongs to. You must remember two points:

If the IP belongs to Bioware/EA:

(i) EA will port ME1 and make ME2 and ME3 mulitplat, without a shadow of a doubt.

(ii) To keep exclusivity, Microsoft will need to pay up EA's projected PS3 profits of ME1 + ME2 + ME3. Well over $250mill (est). Try explaining that to your fans when that amount of money = the budget for 10 AAA games.

If the IP belongs to or is shared by MS:

(i) This is will never hit the light of day.

there are now 20+ million Playstation 3 owners. that's a large potential userbase for Mass Effect and it's sequels.

with the PS3's current install base, it could easily match that now. that wasn't the case back in 2007, when the PS3 was barely at 8 million by the time ME came out.

Its exactly the same as when Tekken6 or FFXIII went multiplat. The MS fanboys crowing over other Sony franchises they can steal was deafening. Most people can't afford 2 systems so justification of their system of choice is normal and completely frustrating.

As for L4D, Gabe and Valve have both labelled the PS3 a waste of time. Fanboys don't like devs sh*tting on their console. The game, however, is universally well-liked by everyone enough so that the hatred toward Valve won't be enough to stop them wanting the game on their system.

If this game does come out to PS3 i'll try it out, but it also shows that exclusives are going the way of the dinosaur. There is either timed exclusives such as Eternal Sonata or Bioshock after the exclusive is up then the publisher can do what ever they want with the game. Unless the game is published by the company who made the system then there is no way they will jump that exclusive to another platform. As for Lft 4 Dead hitting the PS3 antoher great game to add to the collection if it comes. But since EA owns Bioware does that mean Halo might dawn the PS3, I really doubt it I think Microsoft will fight tooth and nail to keep that game on their system. But whatever the out come for Mass Effect it is i enjoyed it on the 360 and I am sure I will enojy it on the Ps3 if it arrives. Games now i believe are going multi plat or with a timmed exclusive then they will hit the other system, companies are in it to make a profit to turn out bigger and better games. I would not be surprised if the exclusive download content for GTA 4 on the 360 I would not be surprised if you do not find it in the Playstation store with in a year after its 360 exclusive.

It was obvious from the moment BioWare was bought by Electronic Arts that Mass Effect would go multi-platform. It is now just a matter of time BioWare/EA confirms this rumor.

I doubt the statement "the current state of the economy" is the main reason they are going multiplatform. EA probably went multi-platform with the trilogy long before the economy took the wrong turn. EA's of doing things has always been about maximizing sales from its portfolio of games on the available systems. Mass Effect having started off as a success story, with two more titles yet to release, why limit the franchise to only the Xbox 360 and the PC if it can also be done on the Playstation 3.

If I owned/ran EA, I would also make Mass Effect available to the Playstation 3 to increase sales and maximize profit for the company.

The Mass Effect IP is owned by EA. EA is a multiplatform company. Not only did it have a good combat system and graphics but the story was excellent and in many games today I feel this is where many fall short. It even had a satisfying ending. Loved it on 360 and think it would be beneficial to the PS3 lineup, especially with the serious lack of RPG's. EA may have purchased Bioware but Bioware has still been given free reign to develop it the way they want. So basically it is the same people making the game, EA is just publishing it.

As far as PS3 fans not buying PS3 exclusives' I can only offer the same words I have offered in the past. PS1 and PS2 were RPG heavy consoles, which were built upon a solid fan base of RPG gamers but now Sony isn't really offering much to those RPG gamers (unless they buy it on PS2) and seem to be more focused on Shooters and racing and although I am a Sony fan (for the same reasons I wasn't an XBOX fan last gen) I get tired of these same generic games. MGS4 looked great but it just wasn't my type of game, where as Mass Effect was.

This hasn't been my favorite gen for games but their are a few that I am looking forward to (White Knight Story) but I really can't see why anyone would be unhappy to get new franchise on their console, even if it isn't great it gives more options.

In NA yes but not in Europe or Japan. Anyway I had ME for my 360(when I still had one)and hadn't played it much, then saw the PC version at a mates and traded mine in immediately. Bought th PC version and am glad I did and would advise anyone else to do the same(even if it does, and if EA have any say it's likely to, go to PS3)as it was much more polished, ran smoother and looked better. Just the best version so I'd be getting the PC game of ME2 and 3 in any case-just much better than the 360(and very likely much better than any future PS3 versions-though they'd add stuff to gve an incentive for a purchaser of ME1 on PS3 I would guess)mo.
Irrelevant to me but great news, if ttrue, and you only game on PS3. Lifts were damn frustrating though and it needs culling from the sequels. Good game though not the world beater it's often painted.

Mass Effect is one of the "exclusives" ppl tend to overlook on 360. It's one of the better games on 360 but of course superior on PC (version I have.) Its really a great game and I finally had the opportunity to play it and I must say I am very pleased. I'm really glad more people will be able to play this brilliant open ended rpg shooter. I actually found this game more enjoyable then fallout 3. Fallout is amazing too but I guess I am more into the story and characters. I'm rather certain Microsoft will do whatever they can to keep this exclusive...timed as I think EA's support for the PS3 (as shown through recent support and announcements) will have them (EA) less than willing to completely take the plunge into exclusivity.

Because it's under the EA umbrella it really does give credence to the possibility of it going multi-plat, and really...would we be surprised? My only fear would be continuity for as much as I loved the original, and would gladly play it yet again, PS3 owners NEED the first if they're going to get any. There's just far too much character development and backstory to append into a galactic encyclopedia for round 2. I wouldn't say it's the only game they've got worth mentioning, that depends on what you're into really...they do have some other exclusives like some of the JRPG's (if you're into that kind of thing).

Ninja Blade looks kinda cool and the gameplay videos I watched yesterday on Gametrailers looked sweet. That game could convince me to buy a 360 but I want to see more closer to it's release and maybe even how it finally turns out before committing. I am a Xbox 360 owner,so I did get the pleasure to buy the special edition Mass Effect & play what I would say for me at that time one of the biggest and boldest RPG's.On occasions I would put the disc in and listen to just the music,classic.Anyway my point is if this is all to become true then I am glad for all the Sony people out there because they to will be able to play what I would say is one bad arse game.Xbox360 owner or PlayStation3 owner,we all should be able to experience and enjoy video games no matter what console you have.But I live in the real world from time to time & I know this is not the case & it is a shame.Good Hunting Gamers.
