Rumor: Rockstar ready to release next GTA by end of 09

According to Loose Talk in the latest Game Informer, RockStar North is already working on the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, which should be ready for release this holiday season.

If you look back, once they had the foundation for GTA 3 in place, they came out with a new game every year. I don't think they will release GTA 5 yet, but rather an expansion in the vein of Vice city or San Andreas. This holiday would make it a 1 1/2 year gap. Which means they have had enough time to make a new game and add in stuff.

Keep in mind that all GTA games are pretty much the same from their original, with new stuff added to them. GTA 4 is the base, and they will just add on top of that!

I actually do think its likely. Remember that the download pack 1 (the lost and damned) was originally planned for August '08. The reason why it was delayed was only for financial reasons by Take2. I'm sure the lost and damned has been finished for a while now and they've been working on the DLC 2 for quite some time now. Even so they've definately already started on the next full GTA game.

Remember the reason IV took 4 years to make is because they created a whole new engine for it (RAGE, Euphoria (or whatever its called)). They have the structure for all new GTA games for this gen down now, all they really need to do is be able to make a new map and missions, which doesn't nearly take as long as making a new engine.

Grand Theft Auto IV is still selling quite reasonbly plus R* are still to release Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned next month and Grand Theft Auto IV: Episode Two by the end of the year so no, GTA V aint gonna be out by the end of 09.

Plus, T2 have said that there wont be a GTA V till 2010 at least.

I doubt it, too much competition is already set in stone this xmas and frankly with so many people disappointed by GTA4 (me included) I can see the next one being a mid year launch (May 2010) because I would not buy it if given the choice between it and a new Call of Duty or Uncharted.

apart from the dodgy controls (of Niko, not the driving, the driving was perfect) it was both an outstanding game and a massive technical achievement, with a city so huge and PACKED with so much detail all streaming from a dvd and with NO load screens?? sure some of the missions got repetitive but what do you expect when there are so many missions.

edit: thats why there is an online mode...to have fun..of course you dont have a chainsaw or a parachute but maybe this time around it was build onto the seriousness of the franchise...and well it succeeded...i dont know what the expectations were for you..but it certainly got me..i do agree once you beat the game with $250k there is nothing to do, but try to replay it and figure out some of the things you couldnt do before..oh well i guess its just a matter of opinion...

First iteration, they get the tech down. This is massively time and resource consuming.

Then they just build upon it for the following 3 - 4 titles. By the time this cycle is done; its time to start from scratch again for the next generation of consoles.

I have a real good number of ideas for this next GTA title. Since we have had a Caucasian, Italian-American and African-American lead character, the next GTA lead character should be Hispanic. I think the next GTA should be based on a modern-day Vice City, with the state of Florida included and main character modelled on a Latino drug cartel baron escaping anti-drug pressure and heat in his country and leave to go to America and set up shop there - PLUS all the best features from previous titles to be included and all the flaws from GTA 4 to be rectified in the new title. The next GTA title should include:

* ALOT more public and private buildings, stores and shops you can enter.

* More varied missions that invlove other criminal activities rather than just going about killing people for example - store hold-ups, robberies, burlgaries, drug-dealing, smuggling, counterfeit etc.

* More fun side activities like gambling, betting, a few sports mini-games.

* The ability to actually make use of your money by buying up properties and legitimate businesses and also invest in illegal money-making enterprises.

* The ability to build up your own gang or criminal organization and engage in turf wars to gain more territory and power.

* More random actions created by other characters on the streets, such as gunfights and gang wars breaking out, fistfights, muggings etc.

* Finally lesser stuff includes, being able to use buses as public transport in addition to trains, more options for clothes customization and custom-made soundtracks or if not that more and better music.

No fanboy stuff here but.....I really do believe my idea for this next GTA title would be better suited as a PS3 exclusive to bring the best out of it, or any ambitious GTA title for that matter. Just ask Dan Houser himself!

EDIT: @nycredude - GTA World Spy? What a silly idea dont make me laugh! LMAO! What is the point of that? GTA is a game about gangsters and criminals not spies or secret agents. Go and buy a James Bond or Splinter Cell game if want stuff like that. How stupid!

gta3 -2001

vice city -2002

san andreas - 2004 (much much larger in scale by several times)

the reason gta 4 development took so long was the creation of the new engine, location scouting for "new york", etc

for the ext gta all they need to do is expand on gta4, the hard work is already done

it has already been stated in the past that they start preproduction on their next gta game during the final stages of the last

so in my mind this is not inconceivable, in fact the game could already be a year or more into development and nobody would be the wiser

chances are it won't show up in 09, but i'm not willing to say it won't appear

i'm learning toward an 09 anouncement, maybe at e3 but not an actual release

as for the the sony exclusivity thing mentioned above...thats not going to happen

rockstar got too fat on xbox and xbox live sales, they aren't going to give that up unless sony puts up the money which at this point in time i don't think they could outbid MS in an exclusivity war

Maybe this one will break my ps3 too. I can't wait to not be able to play it, because it will probably freeze every 10 minutes. I couldn't even get online. I'm never going to buy another rockstar game unless I call them and they guarantee that they will replace my ps3. I have no problem passing on gta games. Yakuza will be enough for me.
