MS Responds to Sony Console Add-On Peddling Claims

Earlier this week, Sony sent Kotaku an oddly timed media bulletin, trumpeting the PlayStation 3's value versus the Wii and Xbox 360. It also accused Nintendo and Microsoft of "peddling add-ons." What say you, Microsoft?

"First, I would say we absolutely would not want to trade places with Sony," said Aaron Greenberg.

"We feel confident that we're delivering great value," he added. "I believe that we deliver more value for games and entertainment than any other platform on the market."

"I would rather talk about why you should buy our console than why you shouldn't buy the competitor's system."

is one of marketing. Sony is simply bad at it. The Bravia name was the last product they successfully marketed.

In a way they are fighting an uphill battle because of their own success. The PS2's astonishing success as a game console has, for most consumers, cemented the Playstation brand as a children's toy. So even if the PS3 powered the home through cold fusion, customers will still think Playstation=games.

Sony has done such a poor job of changing this perception among parents (Sony forgot that parents do most of the buying) that until the PS3 is priced like a video game console, most parents will not be willing to pay for it.

Having said that, the PS3 has been selling astonishingly well for a machine priced at $399-$599, demonstrating 1) the strength of the brand 2) that there are enough consumers out there who do understand the enormous value it provides.

Sony has to find better ways to market it's product than through bizarre ads that only appeal to kids. Kids already know the PS3 exist. They already know it has the best features and performance.

Sony's marketing ought to target the parents. They are the ones with the credit cards and bank accounts. What Sony needs to do is show consumers how the PS3's all-in-one capabilities can redefine the living room. The online movie download ad was a good start. Where's the follow-up?

Terrible leadership on the marketing front. Despite that, the PS3 is selling extremely well for a $400 home entertainment product. At that price, only TV's sell better and Sony has that market under control with it's top selling Bravia TVs and licensing it's older tv tech to low end brands.

As for Greenberg, he's stuck his foot in his mouth so many times, I'm shocked he still has his job. At "half the price" the 360 ought to be outselling not just the PS3 but the Wii as well. This is not a good time to draw attention to that. Having said that, Greenberg knows that most consumers are bad at math and don't know how to multiply $50 x 5 years ($250), the cost of playing online against your friends for the estimated life of the console (barring RROD).

Silly console wars. Well I agree with Sony's original figures that you get more value out of the PS3. Tho I think it is a smarter move that MS did with giving the consumer a choice on what they want by putting everything as add-ons. Thus the people that don't want to spend all the money don't have to and the smaller price on the shelf always looks better to the uninformed masses.

For me, however, I want it all. So PS3 is the better value hands down. Got both anyway though.

That is really stupid, I would rather have a future-proof, top of the line product which has a great amount of features instead of a product that looks like its missing half its components only to find out I have to pay more just to have them. MS just avoided Sony's comment. The 360 is still more expensive than the PS3, regardless of what MS just said. I really like this comment to.

Even if XBL wasn't as good from a stable code stand-point, the 360 controller was made for shooters and comfort. Which it does both better than the DS3. And if I needed free online I would take steam (Valve's PC Network, just in case droids want to know) over the PSN any day.

Why do you think the patent board canned MSes patent for online pay as you go services, because all the MMO/PC-FPSes etc would have to pay MS just to have the service running.

I see as many Playstation 3 commercials as I do Xbox 360 commercials these days. Only difference is MS is marketing heavy towards family friendly crap. Guess they want to take some of Nintendo's audience.

I still cringe every time I see that Rock Band 360 commercial where the mom is playing the guitar and a 6 year old is on drums. The dad is in the background bobbing his head and then it cuts away to the baby jamming out in his high chair. I want to shoot myself.

I personally think they should advertise the Platinum series more, games like Uncharted, R&C Future, Heavenly Sword, Burnout Paradise, GT5, Resistance:FoM and Motorstorm some real classics people can pick up to get the real feel for a PS3.

Of course advertising the value, with a series of adverts with a chap showing his friends the PS3 and what it does acted out casually. Could be a good little idea.

The 360 is soooo incredibly flawed, & PS3 is such an outstanding value that it continues to solidify it's position as the Number 3 out of 3 consoles available this Gen, with an absurd attatch rate for the PS brand, Games that take 3-4+ years to develop, & "great" Exclusives that dont sell, Multiplats that can't run without mandatory installs & usually look worse & run @ lower framerates than 360.... yet Sony still remains fairly arrogant. And you guys eat their "4D @ 1080p @ 120fps" promises up. Wow.

Maybe because every PS3 comes with a HDD. And because you can easily upgrade your HD to the biggest you can find. Cheaply too.

Really no. Firstly, Netflix isn't available world wide, but Blu Ray is, and you still need a subscription ect. no different from using it on the computer.
Secondly, in America, PS3 has it's own film store too. Plus, perhaps slightly off the subject, but in the UK, you can get a add on called PlayTV, enabling you to record your TV directly onto the PS3, so whatever film/show is on, you can watch that. PS3 definitely has the upper hand when it comes to films.

Yes, XBL takes this, but I experience less lag in PSN than I do on XBL. People exaggerate the few problems PSN has.

They certainly do, don't they? Why, just a few months ago the PS3 hit 17 million consoles sold in 2 years at a higher price point and with stiffer competition then when Microsoft just barely broke 13 million in 2 years.

Should you really bring attention to sales when the competition is selling faster than you ever could and growing at a rate 4 times what your product managed last year? It's their personal choice, I guess, but I'd focus attention elsewhere if it were me. Stick to the games library. They still have the advantage of a larger games library from being available longer. I'd stick to that.

Consider a couple of things for me, will you PimpDaddy. Just humor me for a minute.

Here we are, 3 years into this console wars. The 360 has one year over it's competition and that lead was slipping. For almost a full year they were regulated to third place in worldwide sales. Then notice their sales on their home turf fall almost 10% year over year. In contrast, the PS3 and Wii showed growth of 40% and 60% respectively. In two years the Wii overcame and smashed through the 360's installed base. Even the PS3 sold faster than they did (17 million in 2 years where the 360 could only move 13 million in it's first two years).

And then the price cut. By dramatically lowering the 360's price they were able to boost their sales to bring them just slightly above their closest competitor which is now double the price.

Do you really think that bodes well for the long term fortunes of the 360? Did you ever bother to ask why 360 sales were in 3rd place an declining before the price cut? Don't you think some of those factors may still be in play? Any concern that the 360 is still primarily a US only console, struggling to find a place outside of the US just like the Xbox before it? And finally, considering the PS2 and the Wii have only been on the market for 2 years - don't you think it's a little early to call the race over?

Edit in response to your edit. I'm actually a 360 owner and fan as well as a PS3 fan. I like to consider myself a "gamer". That means that I owe no allegiance to one particular console, I'm just not blind to the trends and realities of the gaming industry.

That's because I prefer the PS3. I thought that was pretty obvious. I think the PS3 is the better console and certainly the best value. I didn't always think that. Once upon a time I was absolutely in love with my 360 - thought it was fantastic, recommended it to all my friends and even though I had a PS3 I hardly played it at all.

Then I had 2 consoles RROD on me and one replacement unit scratch the hell out of 3 of my games before I figured out what was going on. Microsoft charged me $340 for repairs and then I had to fight for months to get that money back once they changed the warranty (they apparently had no record I ever paid that money). After 4 months in total of not being able to play the bulk of my games I changed my gaming habits. No longer would I buy the multiconsole titles on my 360. What's the use if you can't play them? Microsoft forced me to play my PS3 and I ended up having a much better gaming experience.

I love the industry and have been following as a hobby for years. I've always been critical of Sony as well as Microsoft. I hated Sony's PR blunders at the beginning. I can't understand why they don't market better. The mess with rumble still bugs me, as does the removal of BC. There's been plenty of things that I think Sony has messed up on.

But in this case their absolutely right. They have better hardware, why wouldn't they highlight the advantages they have over the competition? And they do it all at an incredible price. They're still losing $50/console on these things. It's like they're running the world's largest gamer/movie buff charity we've ever seen.

So yeah, I'm generally pro-Sony...but not because I'm some raving Sony fanatic but because it's the better system. You don't have to be a fanboy to recognize quality, or to understand that after moving 17 million consoles in two years where the 360 could only do 13 million, it's obvious that consumers get it and the PS3 isn't going anywhere, despite what the doomsayers would have you believe.

It cost 840 dollars to build a PS3 and they were selling for 600. It was the cheapest Blu-ray player at the time and I believe the stand alone was 1,000 dollars. I really don't feel like getting into the whole value thing and adding everything up to get the 360 on par with PS3 value but it wasn't that bad at the time if you ask me. To be honest I think its the other way around. Anyone that's been supporting the xbox since 2005 with xbl knows how expensive the 360 is. They have spent $200-150 (for anyone that's been paying it since 2005) for online and that's a lot of money. Almost enough money to buy another 360.

If you want the xbox live full experience, which everyone thinks is the greatest.

Then an Xbox 360 arcade isn't really $199.99. By the time you buy everything necessary to enjoy xbox live it cost you at least $349.99($99.99 for 60 Gig hard drive and Xbox Live Subscription $49.99)same for the pro system, you still don't have Blu-Ray and Wi-Fi, and you have a smaller hard drive.

So for an extra $50.00 you get everything xbox 360 offers at $349.99 plus you get a larger hard drive, Wi-Fi and a Blu-Ray Movie player.

PS3 is a much better value, anyone with ay sense can see that.

If you are trying to knock on Sony's launch lineup...well look at the 360's launch. What did it have? Nothing noteworthy either. Project Gotham 2? I guess that is the biggest title that comes to mind. The only thing people could knock on the PS3 when it launched was that it had no games. I guess they forget how long the 360 had been out already and how little it had to offer till Halo came out. Which I'm not a fan of anyway. Dead Rising was the first title I felt really defined my first good gaming experience on the 360.

Both consoles prove their price as time goes on. As they should. However I'm of course not being nickel and dimed every month for online on the PS3 end. Dropping 60 bucks for a new game still sucks tho. I went crazy over the holidays with all the deals and such.

That 8 million count exactly for the extra year it has been on the market. Remember that the 360 had no real competition its first year and a half.

If Sony can sell a $600 - $400 (since November 2007) better in its first two years than the 360 first two years, with the 360 at its best: LIVE, AAA games, RROD (oops) then of course he wants to trade places. How many PS3 is Sony going to sell in 09? MS better be praying that the PS3 does not get a price cut.
MS is living a lie, ignoring that they had a full year head start by themselves, cheaper console (and crappy too) and then celebrating the 8 million lead.

Ok, so it is true that Microsoft offers cheap asses like me a better value. With the xbox arcade I can atleast play my favorite games for $200. What sucks however, is that Microsoft does charge a ridiculous price for add-ons, hence the outrageous price of the wireless network adapter that few alternatives are able to replace. And none that I know of can do it at 1/3 of the price, so obviously MS knew what they were doing by making it so uncompatable. It surprises me that MS does not offer the wireless capability for $25 or less because the more people that have access to MS Live the more money they will make. Again this makes absolutely no sense, since myself and many others will never shovel out $100 for wireless capability in addition to the membership fees. So MS are thieves in this regard.

Sony on the other hand gives a good value if you want to just play out of the box. They give you everything you need to do anything with the system. I am inclined to believe that it would be better for Sony to have offered a low end PS3 tho, that way people could atleast play the games. They gave no alternative and thats were they failed.

So I conclude with: Shame on them both

there's a difference between implying the PS3 was only good for watching blu-ray (due to a lack of games for a while there) and wanting additional movie-watching functionality on a 360 which had/has a good games library.

@Droid Control - why an add-on? with blu-ray players @ sub-$200 prices it would have to be even lower in price to be worth it. I'll just by a stand-alone player if/when I'm ready to go blu, instead of relying on a 360 attachment.

A couple things first...
I bought a PS3 on launch day, sold it for a nice profit, and regretted it ever since.
I bought a 360 on launch day, have had it replaced three times and never regretted it.
I bought a Wii a year after it came out, I love it but NEVER play it.

Okay...so, most of these comments seem to be about value. If you want a great, full piece of hardware, the ps3 seems the obvious winner. I would have bought another one long ago if they were 100 dollars cheaper. I will buy one if the price comes down this year.
The 360's add-on's can be helpful though. It gives options to families that don't need everything the ps3 forces on you. You might not want to get you 12 year old a 400 dollar game system that sits in his bedroom. You can then buy the things he might use without paying for things he and you may never use (I sold my ps3 to a dad buying it for his 12 year old and the dad had never played a video game in his life...didn't even know what a ps3 was, just that his son wanted one and he had a lot of money). And that $200 arcade is great for real gamers, too. I'm setting up a game room in my basement and am going to pick up 3 of the cheap 360's to get some good, cheap multiplayer going.
Oh, and xlive is worth the money.

Value is subjective. For some people the Xbox 360 is a value at its current price and configuration. For others it lacks the features that they desire right out of the box. On the other hand some people feel as though the PS3 is the best value going considering what you get for the money. For other people the PS3 is just too expensive regardless of what's included. Still for others HD visuals and online play are less important then just plain fun, so the Wii fits the bill.

We see the range of opinions playing out in the way the consoles sell. Setting our own opinions aside, With the Wii and DS Nintendo gives more people what they want right now than Microsoft or Sony do. That's the bottom line, and no amount of price justification is going to change that.
