Microsoft: Xbox 360 Outsold PS3 Over Weekend

In a sign that the Xbox 360 might outsell the PlayStation 3 for the third month in a row, Microsoft said it outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio over the Black Friday shopping weekend.

Holiday sales are critical for video game console makers because they account for the majority of console sales each year.

The Elite costs the same as a PS3 at $399. The Pro is $299 and the Arcade is $199. Microsoft sells 3 different SKU's and their totals are a combination of the 3. This should be simple. How about for once..just admit

1.MS's strategy with the 3 SKU's is actually working. The SKU's are upgraded with bigger HDDS over time and such but people are buying whatever SKU fits their habit.

2.Ms's Advertising + Marketing strategy is on point. They market the big Exclusives very well I'd say. I know some complain about their PS3 games not making it on Mountain Dews, while some don't wanna look at Halo 3 Dew cans but that is the whole purpose of Marketing..(take a course why dontcha). Big edge if done right.

3.MS's strategy was to come out first(We all know they rushed it for good reason, at the same time jeopardized the 360's hardware quality. Somehow, they have been able to sustain sales. It has not been perfect with the RROD, but the 3 year warranty was swift and the year head start sorta softened that blow.

RROD is the BIGGEST AMMO against the xbox 360(just come to N4G) but like I said, with the year head start, they were able to minimize the damage and soften the disaster. With that said everything down below has and will help sales but some will continue to state "Xbox 360 sells because it's CHEAP".

+NXE/XBL - Came at a good time which allows HDD installs that lessens Heat, Noise, and Loading Times.(optional)

+Falcon + Jasper's chipsets will also hasten the death to RROD.(Continue to knock on wood though, which has become daily ritual I'm sure)

+Huge Gaming library with more diverse library than the competition with Big Blockbuster Sequels.

+Same Multiplatform games on other consoles

+3 Different SKU's at a decent Market Price(though upgradable if you buy the cheapest, you'll just have to bendover a lil, so save, until you get the one, you really want.)

Anyhow there is more to it why the 360 is selling, it's not just it's cheaper. It has always been cheaper. Plus there are 3 SKU's, the top SKU is still $399.

In the big picture MS has a long way to go. In terms of matching Sony and Ninty still. I am proud how well MS is improving in the industry(hardware issues aside.) I am sure 360 will last longer then its predecesor.

Time to trade that old 360 in for a new one with a warranty and another 3 year extension. Why keep the one you have when we can get it replaced. Not sure if that unit will count towards sales or units shipped. More or less that big NetFlix add on might be a system seller to.

MS's now marketing strategy hit's home just recently I've started seeing Sony do the same. You'd see a game advertisement for a multi-platform game. Then just before the game advertisement ends instead of showing available for these systems only one console is shown with a price.

If it's 360, the screen turns white and then the 360 logo appears with sound effects. It then changes to a screen with a 360 setup then an announcer says "360 starting at one-ninety-nine."

If it's PS3 centered the image goes black and then the Playstation 3 logo and sound effect appears. Then it switches to a screen with a PS2, PS3 and a PSP.

Marketing has a lot to do with it as well, next time you see that Burnout Undercover or Fallout commercial watch the endings. ^.~ They're designed to lead people in to one system or the other.

Yes you are right, it's not that hard to drop the price, but obviously Sony as a company isn't in the position right now to drop the PS3's price and take more losses.

However, if the rumors prove to be true, a PS3 price drop could be coming in March 2009, so a price drop may not be that far off. And a possible PS3 price drop a little after Killzone 2's release date is going to be pretty big.

The Xbox 360 is double the price of the 360, and it's expected to outsell the PS3.... but when the PS3 hits $299...well, we'll just have to see what happens then.

Sony managed to get a better lineup of games this year compare to MS.

Sofar Sony have managed to outsell the x360 worldwide this year despite not having a price cut and with $100 and now $200 more expensive than the x360. I would say this is something for Sony to boast about but they don't. Sony just focus of their sales compare from last year because they are very confident about their PS3 strategy unlike MS that talks about beating Sony every week now.

That fact still remains. Halo,Fable,NG,PGR,Froza,Gears are already out. What other Major Software does MS has to compete with Sony from now until the next gen?

Sales wise, a console will sell the most when it reaches 199 like the x360 is now as its now affordble to the mass market. Even if MS reduce the x360 price to 120 it will not sell as much as when it first reached 199 i.e it won't be as effective anymore. Look at the PS2 as an example.

199.99 doesn't sound that attractive right now to many even though it might look that way to you. The way things have been lately a price tag of 150.00 would be much more attractive. GT4 sold upwards of 10 million copies on a console with a user base over 140 million strong. In 2005 maybe 1 out of 10 people owned GT4. That is very impressive.

GT5:P has sold 2.2 million copies on a console with a userbase of less than 20 million. That is still close to 1 in 10, but actually better than what GT4:P sold in ratio and sheer numbers.

Halo 3 has sold over 8.1 million copies on a console that just hit 25 million. 1 out of 3 Xbox 360 owners also own Halo 3. That is an incredible amount per system sold.

In order for GT5 to beat Halo 3, they will need to sell at a ratio of 2 to 1. I honestly don't see that happening. GT5 should sell very well when it finally releases, but it would be very difficult to top Halo 3 with the user base that Sony has with the PS3. Launch is quite a ways away though so who knows.

Dude. GT franchise is bigger than Halo. The least selling GT game was GT2 with 9.3 million.

GT3 sold close to 15 million in its lifetime when it debut back in July 2001 when the PS2 was just about 1 and a half years old with about 19 million by then i presume because i remeber that the PS2 sold about 24-25 million in two years from March 2000 - March 2002.

I am not saying that the x360 don't have any great franchise comming out but what i am saying is that the PS3 has way more than the x360. We could count new franchise like Alan wake, crome hound and Nanja blade but the PS3 also have new ones like Heavy rain, Infamouse, war devil to counter. This is where Sony also tops MS because Sony has alot of Devs working on true exclsuives for the PS3. This is common knowledge.

Yes gears is not from the xbox era but its certianly one of the biggest franchise for the x360 this gen apart from Halo offfcourse. I mentioned it because its already a proven franchise and part 2 is already out.

@Lowcarb : Inflation and price index has gone up since last gen, not down. As i said earlier. The mass market price is when the console sells the most. Case in point. PS1 and PS2. Even when the PS1 and PS2 reached 120, they didn't sell as much when they first reached 199.The price difference of 49 bucks from 199 to 150 is not really a big seller as the console is already affordable unlike say the PS3 dropping from 399-299. In the end MS needs to be worried. Its already cheaper than the wii with most of its main titles out and yet people still value the wii over it and its not destroying the PS3 sales worldwide. We will have to wait for confirmation but i am pretty confident that Sony will outsell the x360 again this year.

Gran Turismo has sold over 50 million units across three generations of consoles. There is no doubt the series is huge. GT3's numbers are high due to the tremendous marketing campaign and the fact it was a pack in for quite some time. The bundle was $329 which was $30 higher than the regular $299 retail price of the PS2. Still, the average is a little over 10 million which is nothing to sneeze at.

All consoles drop in price over time as the components to make them drop in price and they are able to use smaller dies for the mobo, etc; they become more cost efficient. MS has always said from the beginning they wanted to get down to the mass market price of sub-$200 and that has been there plan all along for the Core/Arcade.

I mean, you can get sales estimates from retailers but that is hardly concrete numbers and until NPD data (in North America) is released, no better than VGCHartz--unless that is where they got the numbers from.

i went into walmart this morning and saw a HUUUUUGGGEEE @ss line at the return service there and most of them had 360's lol.. there were at LEAST 30 peeps there.
and every time i go into big retailers like best buy,frys ect ect ... theres ALLWAYS people crowding the ps3 section checkin out games,playing demo's and buying peripherals-but NO!,i have only seen like 1-3 people in the 360 section sometimes just scouting around,and then (of course) they dont buy anything and move on to the ps3 section.

For the holiday shopper, the 360 offered some real steal deals with some bundles at stores offering 3 games and the console for regular arcade price. They were practically giving them away if you think about it and it's obvious MS wants to keep customers away from Sony.

Dont care what yall think, We had 60 360's and 30 ps3's on black friday along with guitar hero with 2 guitars for 70 bucks 15 for each console. WE are out of 360's except for 10 elites, and we have 19 ps3's no guitar hero left for 360 and 14 left for ps'3. So if that is any indication then yes 360 gave the ps3 a whoopin this weekend. I would guess that is where these numbers are coming from the retailers available stock before and after the sales.

The Sony version of GTA4 had higher attach rates than the 360 version. MGS4 has higher attach rates than Gears 2. LBP is mopping the floor with Banjo Kazooie. Tomb Raider is selling better on the PS3, Burnout and DMC4 sold better, Unreal III sold almost twice as many on the PS3, Fifa sold better while 360 owners turned their noses up at Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Banjo, Too Human, Ace Combat 6, Vitual Fighter online (not even 200k). What does that tell you? If you're a developer you're taking note that no matter what type of game you're putting out, you'll find buyers on the PS3 vs the 360 where everything that doesn't start with Halo or Gears is routinely ignored.

Maybe you should go check out the software sales for cross platform games like Fallout 3, Madden, NCAA Football..... maybe you should look at Gears 2 vs. Resistance 2 (both of which released the same week), look at LBP vs. Fable 2 (again, same release time frame), and you will see that the 360 is dominating is software sales. Call of Duty WaW has nearly sold twice the amount on 360 as it has on PS3. I think you should do a little more research before you post this type of info again, everyone knows the 360 sales more software than the PS3, and that the 360 has the largest attach rate of any console. These are FACTS!

That is because in the bonehead move of the year Sony stripped out the B/C so now yo have 120 million users with a game library they can't carry over to the new system, so why switch? Sony has always stated they would support B/C in all PS's, so in essence they flat out lied to the public before the PS3 was launched, way to win over prospected buyers Sony. I can't say how many post on the PS forum I have read about why my new PS3 80 gig won't play my PS2 games. Tell N4G bloggers something we DON"T know! The Ps3 has not had a REAL price drop yet. Of course, especially with the economy, the Ps3 will not make up much ground...until the price goes down.

And this is not an excuse either. This system has more to offer (WIFI, FREE ONLINE, BLU RAY, and WEB BROWER) than it's competitors. Now, this does not mean that it is the best choice today, but come next summer...everyone will see the ps3 do exactly what the ps2 did.
