Boy collapses after playing World of Warcraft for 24 hours straight

The Times Online: A schoolboy collapsed and went into convulsions after playing a new version of the World of Warcraft computer game for 24 hours straight.

The 15-year-old boy and his friends were playing Wrath of the Lich King when he suffered what appeared to be an epileptic seizure, it was reported today.

"They played all day and all night. Maybe they got a few hours of sleep. They ate a little food and breakfast at their computers," the boy's father told the Kvällsposten newspaper in Sweden.

Doctors told the father that his son's bodily systems had been disrupted by a combination of sleep deprivation, lack of food, and the prolonged period of concentration playing the game.

so..the father was well aware of what his son was doing..and yet, i assume did nothing if it got to this point.

Father of the Year, right there folks. But of course, that might not even be brought up. It'll be another "VIDJAGAMES DID BAD BOOM STUFF!"

GrammarPolice5636d ago

"The boy is expected to make a full recovery but his father said he plans on limiting the amount of time his son is allowed to play computer games."

Good call, Dad!

Regret5636d ago

14hr MGS3. Only game I finished same day I bought it. And I regret it cause MGS4 came out few months ago :/ Anyway, not playing much, only great games once a month.

sirbigam5636d ago

Those were the glory days man playing for hours stopping for food and bathroom breacks with not a care in the world, this kid just overdid it yu gotta sleep atleast when its night time or starting when the sun comes up.

ThanatosDMC5636d ago

Yeah, when i bought MGS4 i couldnt put it down. I did however do those walk around and stretch a but after each act. Best sacrificed sleep time for a videogame!

Resistance 2 was another story. 4am in the morning and everytime i die makes me want to play more and more.

but 32h is simply insane! you're one crazy gamer vitz! I think I've heard someone in China died for gaming more than 24h straight in a cyber cafe before.

my personal record is 30h though but in between, I rested for 5-10 mins and minus 2h for dinner! it was in end of 2005 and it was a crazy Japanese board game - Momotaro Dentetsu! that was one hell of a crazy winter! what was I thinking back there as I was a month away from my university's final year presentation!

now I'm busy working and hardly have time to game longer than just several hours a week. but last year when I was in Australia, I spent 17h straight of R&C FToD. I finished the game with all the side missions on my 1st go! that game is simply hard to put down once played!

ThanatosDMC5636d ago

I couldnt help it. The game told me to stand up and stretch! HAHHAHAH... yeah, it's really starting to get harder and harder to find time to play our games the older we get and the more responsibilities start falling on our laps.

When i travel, i have my PSP to play MHF2 or Front Mission 3 or Legend of Legaia.

ultimolu5636d ago

I couldn't play a game that long. O-o

psnDevistator3565636d ago

This is what happens when a game doesn't have an ending.

BLuKhaos5636d ago

32 hrs? wow and I thought I was hardcore but then again the longest I ever played a game was 14 hrs so I guess thats not too bad.

Cernunnos5636d ago

Wow, playing a game for 24 hours straight WITH food and drink? How can you collapse from that? Fall asleep maybe but god... I've done that more times than I can count.

Haha, loser, I love video games but too much of it messes with the mind, you gotta know your limitations bud , hitting rock bottom is a bltch!

RememberThe3575636d ago (Edited 5636d ago )

I bet the kid got home and went right back to WoW. The kid needed to take some breaks, go for a run, play some basketball or some catch. Some of you guys need to get out more for your own health. You put it perfectly, "you gotta know your limitations bud".

Top 10 Epic Raid Bosses in MMORPGs

Raid bosses are easily in my opinion the most important aspect of MMORPGs. Games that fall into a different genre may be more dynamic, but only here will tens and sometimes hundreds of players need to come together and work together to defeat an epic boss in a raid. Just simple getting together as many players as possible is not enough to determine your success. Players usually need to use trial and error with a number of different strategies before they can actually take down the boss. All this is done in order to test the weaknesses, come up with an effective approach and correctly coordinate players in the raid.

Over time, the concept of an “epic boss” has become rather blurred. Colossal monsters, the destruction of which requires a long preparation time, and then became just another episode from grandma’s fairy tales. Some raid bosses have already gained the “cult” status, and veterans of MMORPGs could tell you a dozen stories about those legendary fights. Fextralife's author tried to select the most powerful bosses who once upon a time, caused a burning sensation and will certainly awaken stirrings of nostalgic feelings from experienced raiders!

Haha, yea that's why I had to quit FFXI in the mid 2000s. The game had so many ridiculously long raids and fights. Not to mention the long ass NM camps w tons of gold selling bot users waiting to snatch the kill. So frustrating bc they were always there. Some were close to 24 hour camps if I remember. Some shorter. I loved the game & community, but had to walk away. Too demanding. Pandemonium is after my time.

How Warcraft 3 changed the gaming landscape

In light of the rumoured development of a Warcraft 3 remaster, it seems the original game deserves some time in the spotlight. When it comes to games that defined a genre, most would look to Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, or Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind . However, despite being relegated to the shadow of World of Warcraft, Warcraft 3 and it’s expansion changed the modern gaming landscape as we know it.

The Death of WoW

World of Warcraft , or WoW to most people, has been the epitome of a MMORPG. They had once perfected the formula of an intriguing lore, interactive gameplay and a generally fun MMORPG, to the extent that new entrants of MMORPGs can only hope to follow WoW and hopefully differentiate itself along the way. Games I’ve played after WoW (admittedly not much) such as RO2, Allods Online, etc, all fall into the same trap that makes it noticeably similar to WoW.

Codewow3569d ago

I can assure you the Pay to Play model isn't affect this game as much as some believe. The worst thing about WoW to any veteran WoW player is that it's become too EASY. As well as extremely repetitive.

Joelwow3568d ago

You are right, Blizzard keep reducing the difficulty of raids
