To whomever wrote this article, it must have taken some creativity and elbow grease, however. I couldnt help but notice some errors, maybe typos... Like for instance, in the spec chart, the PS2 could display a 1080i signal, just go check out Gran Turismo 4, the PS2 could be shipped with an HDD and a copy of Linux, for extra of course, second is that the PS3's cell does the audio, so for him to cap it at 7.1 is kind of weird when it's capable of more farther down the line(remember that there is a TSC <Toshiba Super Companion> chip in the PS3, not even being used yet, unless this person is only ounting the standard base package, the HDD is upgradable in the PS3, and gets way faster than SATA 1.5, and I noticed that they didnt list Bluetooth in the PS3. Judging from what I read, the PS4 that this article refers to, wouldnt be out for at least 4 more years, judging by the technology they used. Also I dont understand why Sony would use A DDR interface for memory, when XDR(Rambus)memory has specs that go way ahead of DDR's capabilities already... Just my interpretation...Back to Uncharted.

considering that the ps3 game devs(like those of motorstorm) didnt know the final specs until late in the day, i doubt final ps4 specs have been decided.

and who actually cares, its gonna be more powerful than the ps3, and fix some of the mistakes they made with the ps3 whilst keping some of the key features if not improving on them.

standard, upgradeable hdd's will be there, bluray will be there, blutooth will probably be there, and its gonna be easier for devs to work with, probably keeping a similar basic arcitecture as the ps3, maybe something like multiple cell's or something.

sony always makes it hard for devs, but they support the format for 7-10 years, so while the initial uptake is hard, the devs get a decade to milk (enhance) their engines for cash. compare that to other consoles that last 3 years, to pc's which are always advancing, are prone to piracy. add to that, new tech needs something to drive its development. in 10 years id expect programming skills to be lightyears ahead of where they otherwise would be (for all formats) if sony hadnt created a complicated acrchitecture and given it a way to be profitable. thats why i dont see the sense in devs like valve refusing to learn new things. they'll be left in the dust.

"Holographic Disc (HVD)" - ehh no. Sony will be looking to keep the cost of the PS4 down to a minimum as the main reason why they are 'losing' this gen console war is because of the high cost per unit because of its advanced technology (cell and bd drive).
"QF-HDTV (3830x2160p)" as above, not gonna happen. 1080p games will be the standard and sony won't try anything tricky / advanced. HDMI2? With less than 0.001% of consumers having a tv capable of this, i hope i don't need to explain myself.

Why would Sony dump Blu-ray for a 1x 160Gb HVD discs(16MB/s). Pointless when x8 or x12 Blu-ry drives will be affordable by the time PS4 comes, and with storage size of over 200Gb.

Also 2Gb main ram & 1Gb graphics won't cut it for nexgen. Also I doubt Sony will drop Rambus ram, every Playstation has supported cutting edge ram.

Cell is set to have 32 SPEs or eSPEs in 2010/2011. Not 16. Clock is set to run around the same speed as the previous Cell chip as well not 6-8 Ghz. First Cell run well up to 4.6 Ghz. 2nd one will likely hold the same. It will have between 2-4 PPE cores as well. Who knows how many threads the chip will be able to do. I don't, but its at least 32+ depends on how many per SPE will be done. Its likely that could be 2 per SPE if not 4. So anywhere between 32 threads to 128 threads. Although its likely that if they use the Cell as part GPU some of those will be split up to do GPU work.

As far as the GPU goes. Sony's original plan for the Cell was for it to be a CPU/GPU chip. Cell 2 might hold enough juice for that to happen. If not alone then they could just add another Chip on the board and have one be the CPU and one be the GPU. Either way the power of it will be amazing.

Disc format = http://www.electronista.com... :P 12x Quad-layer discs that store up to 100 GB per disc. Not 200. The 50 GB discs are dual-layered discs so that is why they have 50 GB. The Quad Layer discs will only hold 100 GB. Either way that is alot and noone has filled a 50 GB disc to the rim yet. Only one I hear of coming close is Kojima with MGS 4.

anyone who says anything negative within a 5 word sentence is a MS fanboy. Ether way something does seem possible the terabyte hard drive is not farfetched cause of digital distribution of games, videos, music. Hopefully by then games like Madden will be a one time buy and then have updates every week to keep stats and trades up to date. While i'm game for fun speculation like this article has done, I just can't see Sony using any optical based media for the PS4.

I think Sony has learned it's lesson going with such expensive components and will instead go with a medium that is cheaper, faster and more reliable like there own Memory stick duo (or whatever flash media they have then). The advantages of Flash media over Optical are just too numerous to pass up.

Knew it was fake the moment I saw these two : 3830x2160p resolution and HVD. Not only will you have to buy a new HDTV to get the most out of the PS4, but the new disc format will most likely make it twice as expensive as the ps3 was at launch, and I'm pretty sure that Sony doesn't want November 2006 to happen all over again. I think it costs about 150 dollars to make a single HVD, which means games would then probably retail for about 175-200 dollars. Not exactly the best way to get people to buy your product.

EDIT: Did anyone else notice that one model of the PS4 supposedly comes with MGS5? Gee, I wonder when that game was announced? =B

1. By 2011, Blu-Ray will support 200GB, so the format will not have be replaced (at great expense).

2. Quad HD?! Doubt it! The human eye cannot appreciate the difference... at least not enough to spend a fortune upgrading our tv's.

3. Only 45nm at 2011? Thats a little conservative.

4. 16 SPE's? Possibly but 24 or 32 might be economicly feasible.

5. 9.1 Surround sound? Nice, but like Quad HD the return on the investment is VERY low. Probably not worth it. Besides, who has the space to put 9 speakers around their living room?

Very few people are upgrading to 7.1 audio. Even with Blu ray most movies are still 5.1, veyr few of them are 7.1. Thats how it is going to be for a very long time.

Making 720p games has increased development costs for games substantially. 1080p is even more. The day we see a 2000p game is the day we have 99.99 game prices and 100 million development costs as the norm.

In short, the law of diminishing returns comes in to consideration.

I would guess that any console release has to balance power consumption, price, and features.

It would be a safe assumption to presume that the PS4 (is ever released) would still be 1080p. As for the GPU, it is probably too early to guess. The use of an additional cell chip for the GPU was originally mentioned for the PS3 so the PS4 could go down that route, especially given that that AMD and Nvidea are heading down the GPCPU route as well. On the other hand, a purpose built GPU may be more power efficient, allowing the console to run cooler.

For the CPU, Sony must stay with the CELL processor. Any change would alienate developers who have had to endure a steep learning curve with the CELL. As others have mentioned, the SPE count is likely to rise but the clock speed isn't likely to be much higher.

I'd guess that USB3 would be included as it should be reasonably cheap be 2012. HDMI should stay (as most TV sets will still accept HDMI by then). Lack of memory on the PS3 has caused problems for some devs so I'd guess that the PS4 will go for quantity over quality (XDR is expensive).

Um, 3830x2160p with 48 bit color????? If they did their math they would have concluded that every jump in resolution and color depth (plus z stencil) exponentially increases your pixel fillrate needs, as well as as your memory/frame buffer needs. And those needs will in turn need to fulfilled at a much quicker pace. So, you're moving more data and you're moving it FASTER.

And he mentions 802.11n, when if fact that will be an old standard when this system comes out. He didn't speculate Wimax into the equation?

1920x1080 is beautiful as it is. I think pushing it further just for games is a bit ludicrous. Even for TV and movies. The original NTSC standard (for broadcast TV) came out in 1953 and has endured 50+ years. And we're all thinking that the HD standard is going to be surpassed in a fifth of the time?

Bluray might extend its life into PS4 (I can't honestly see a new format coming in)

Here's my speculation about next gen:

Network speeds will increase to the point that DLC and VOD will be more commonplace.

Game developers will offer "cutting room floor" type extras that you can have access to FROM THEIR NETWORK, instead of nitpicking through it all and putting stuff on XBL or PSN.

Burnout Paradise shows you what a well built online enabled gaming environment should look like. News, events, challenges, etc. Game developers will build on that, making more of an open sourced extensibility (AKA Little Big Planet).

Home may prove to be a completely next gen feature getting its field test this gen.

The main ppe's will be used for what normal cpu's do today, basically 3ppe's like 360's 3 cores.

But the spu's are provide the main grunt, for audio processing, and physics.

That's why killzone 2 rocks, spu's.
