PS3 Outselling Xbox 360 in Europe

Nintendo has released figures for 2008 hardware sales in Europe which reveal the PS3 is outselling the Xbox 360 - though the Wii is still laughing in both of their faces.

More than 10.4 million Wii consoles have been shifted in Europe this year. The high point for Nintendo was April, when nearly 180,000 units were sold. The figure for Xbox 360 during the same month was around 90,000, as it was for PS3.

Overall, PS3 sales are said to exceed those for Xbox 360. However, Microsoft's console proved more popular than its rival during October, when a price cut boosted sales to more than 60,000 units.

its great news for Sony, but I must say its in everyones interest, especially gamers (and thats both 360 and ps3 gamers) that both xbox and playstation remain roughly neck and neck. Once a particular console starts dominating sales that company feels like they don't need to try so hard. Sony have already been a bit slack by letting some of the biggest franchises slip to xbox.

The Xbox 360 has always done on par or below PS3 in Europe. In Japan it was previously dead, came back a little only to get beaten down really hard. That is how the worldwide sales figure gives Sony the edge.

The title suggest that PS3 is currently outselling Xbox in Europe, which the article contradicts. If anything it is quite impressive that MS got the leg up in October (due to the price cut).

On another note, I don't know why the PS3 is doing so well. Sure it got great games, but so does the Wii and Xbox 360. However, the PS3 has the clunkies user interface. Last night I wanted to play Haze (average game) co-op and did an update to firmware 2.52 which I had to start manually since it never informed me that there was an upate. Guess what the darn thing took 30-40 minutes to download... I was like WTF!!! My Xbox never takes that long and even the Wii is faster. How big is the freaken update?

If you READ the article, you'll see that it was outselling it until September. Then they tied and the PS3 was surpassed in October.

Considering we're in Novemeber now, after Gears of War 2 launch, all chances are that the Xbox 360 is outselling once again the PS3 this month, and until the end of the year.

So, what this says is what we all knew. the PS3 WAS outselling the Xbox 360 and now the tables have turned.

PS3 is way to expensive compared to the competition. I'm not saying the PS3 is overpriced, it's just too expensive comapred to Wii and X360.

I hope Sony cuts the price soon, else MS will see much bigger sales on the X360. It's incredible that PS3 is selling more than X360 even though it's much more expensive. But now you can get an X360 Arcade in Norway for 979 NOKs, that's about 140 US dollars, the PS3 kosts in Norway 3900 NOKs, so the PS3 kosts 560 US dollars. That's just crazy, it's strange anyone is even buying at that price.

Well, I agree with you, and luckily there are a lot of people willing to pay that much for the best console available, me included, I actually got it at launch for about 1000 US dollars and I think it's great value for money. But if I was to buy a console for my kids just to play games, it's kida expensive.

I use it as a media hub for streaming video/pics/music, I have loads of Blu-rays and loads of games. It's a cheap entertainment center, but an expensive games console, so for the kids and the mainstream it's still PS2 and Wii that goes.

Problem with 360 is that the 199$ model is not that great for hardcore gamers. We need a harddrive in which case we need to dish out a 100 bucks for the premium model. At that point, why not dish out another 100$ and get a blu-ray player on in the deal.

PS3 has been outselling 360 worldwide for 2007 (in total) and in 2008 in most months. Japan, whilst large, doesn't have as big an effect as the US does (where the 360 outsells the PS3 more often than not). So the PS3 must be outselling the 360 in Europe to make up the numbers.

PS3 will easily outsell the 360 this year, just like it did last year. And guess what? Last year was its first year on the market (in EU).

Given the fact that it's the most expensive gaming console.. it turns off a lot of people.. turned me off when it first came, although i was basically broke that time building my gaming PC rig..

anyways.. the PS3's gaming library is expanding and now we're starting to see it's hardware picking up steam..

I agree that the price point and lack of quality titles (to begin with) could have put some people off. But the fact remains that despite launching in March of last year in EU, the PS3 still outsold the 360 worldwide in 2007. This was thanks to Japan and EU. It's not surprising that the PS3 outsells the 360 in Europe. In places like Spain, for example, the PS3 often outsells the Wii even.

The 360's price cut will give them a spike in sales, then they will die down again. There is no "magic price point" at which everyone buys a console. The Wii sells so well because of its wide appeal. The PS2 sold well for a similar reason (diversity of games). The 360 has just dropped its price. It's still seen as a console with the same type of games. If you take out Gears and Halo, the lineup is actually a lot weaker than the PS3's. Lots of people don't like either ;)

If the PS3 has closed the lead the 360 had due to releasing a year earlier, then that means Sony has outsold Microsoft during the time in which both consoles were available. Microsoft may have gotten to the ring ahead of Sony, but once Sony climbed through the ropes, they started winning the fight. How many people bought the 360 prior to the release of the PS3 because they were eager to get into then next gen of gaming, as well as there being no other next gen option at the time? It seems when choice is available, Sony is ahead.

I never owned an Xbox, but I bought a 360 because I wanted to step into next gen gaming. If the PS3 had been available, I probably would have bought that instead, having been completely satisfied with my PS2. However, I'm kind of glad now that things happened the way they did because I have both consoles, and I can't imagine not having played MS exclusives like Halo 3 or both Gears.

You see the red line and the green line and the gap between them. The big chunk of white before week39 is how much more the PS3 sold then the 360, the small chunk after is the 360 selling more.

And you might notice in one of the paragraphs above that, lifetime wise, the PS3 has sold as much as the 360, despite the 360's lead.

You might also want to factor in, that although the 'Europe' tag is only data from some select countries, one of them is the UK which is thought to be the EU country where MS is doing the best..

Without rivarly between SONY and Microsoft there wouldnt be such games as Killzone2, Fable 2, Gears of War, Resistance 2 etc..
Those titles are called system sellers. If there was just Microsoft or SONY in the gaming market (i mean just one console which everyone buys) SONY or Microsoft wouldnt bother to create better looking games for their systems because the single console in the market would already be doing good.

If ahything the plethora of platforms allows some of the mediocre games we've had to suffer possible(I.E Red Steel on the Wii(when there were few FPS's for it)or maybe Haze on PS3(which is said to be getting a sequel despite stinking))because of various little holes in each console's library. Sales are sometimes irrelevant as a lot of good games don't pull big numbers, (see Ico for reference). It could mean that some people are naive and willing to buy shlt in a case just because it has "Only on xbox 360" on it. You are a typical xbot who thinks that If a game doesn't sell a bazillion copies on its first day its automatically a failure. If a game has sales longevity than it's a success.

Ico (and by extention Shadow of the Collossus) were both amazing games, both of which would be considered "flops" in this day of rife fanboyism.

It's a good thing Sony see enough good in Team Ico that they'll allow them the resources to craft amazing games for the limited numbers who buy them.

The 360 on the other hand is being sold purely for gaming..
