Star Wars: The Old Republic First Details

It may have been one of the worst kept secrets in the industry, but the cat is officially out of the bag today. After rumors based on corporate cooperation, speculation about job postings, and even an outright acknowledgement by n high-ranking executive, LucasArts and BioWare have finally officially announced their joint massively-multiplayer online game at an event in San Francisco today. Titled Star Wars: The Old Republic, the new game is the first MMO for BioWare and the second Star Wars MMO for LucasArts.

I would love to see it on the PS3.

And it would be awsome if it would be a xplatform so all of us could play together. Could be bigger than WoW. Imagine...PC, 360 & PS3 users playing together.

Cross platform between PC, PS3 and 360 would truly be something special, but I wonder if the millions of fanboy cries could suddenly be silenced, and the corporates egos be overcome to allow such a thing to happen.

Ironically enough, it might just be EA's greed that pushes forward for this to happen.

Kinda like Final Fantasy 11 (or XI as it's called, just like your name), except that FFXI was PC, 360 and PS2, and PS2 isn't really part of the fanboy war, even if it's included now and then.

If they released The Old Republic on PC, PS3 and 360 at the same time, with 3-way cross platform, you could get some funny (sad) scenarios.

Like having a 360 fanboy becoming in-game friend with a PS3 fanboy, without being aware of the other's "allegiance", then finding out and suddenly hating each other, just like stupid neighbours who have been friends their whole lives, then suddenly hate/kill each other over silly external trifles like politics and religion.

Or PS3 fanboys and 360 fanboys forming clans and fighting each other all the time...it could be intriguing. I can see all the PS3 fanboys having red lightsabers and 360 fanboys having green light sabers haha.

Even so they are leaving plenty of room for KOTOR 3 to exist. 200 years after Kotor II? There is plenty that could be put into a KOTOR 3 game no matter what they say. We were told by Epic that Gears of War wasn't coming to the PC and we have that. The focus is on their main game of the hour.

The fact that they went the MMO route and just skipped the Revan/Exile story line really annoys me. Yea they might bring it up in the MMO but I don't care, I wanted a KOTOR 3 single player game but it doesn't have near the potential money making possibilities that the MMO does.

Why bother finishing the story you started telling with the first two KotoR games when you can jump ahead 300 years and skip it entirely?

And of course no mention of PvP anywhere in this article, because MMO players these days are carebears who just want to kill make-believe AI-controlled drones until they drop Super Loot Item 37.

I disagree. I think the Star Wars Universe is huge and so it seems fitting that it would eventually turn into an MMO. It has nothing to do with Blizzard.

In the first Star Wars MMO created by Lucas Arts, everyone eventually wanted to become a jedi anyway. So this game has great potential to achieve many of the gamers' demands as the setting(The Old Republic) reflects the initiative to meet this demand.

I honestly think this game has much potential.

I would also suspect it could come to PS3 simply because Sony is dedicated to expanding into MMOs for a long time (The Agency, DC Universe)...and the PS3 infrastructure can actually support this style of gaming

In building a new pc. let's hope they take a page from Blizz and keep the specs modest so that folks with lower end pc's can play it. Cause I'm not dropping a couple g to play two games. Or if they bring it out for consoles even better. Ps3 to me would be the obvious choice.

I'm disappointed with this news as a KOTOR fan. Star Wars: The Old Republic is not KOTOR. It will not have an engaging single player campaign. It will not have an exciting dialog tree where your choices have far reaching consequences. Nope, in the "sequel" you are one in a million that isn't significant in the least. Not to mention the visuals look far worse than even KOTOR 1. Last but not least, this game is PC exclusive for the moment. Outside of the Agency MMO from Sony, no one seems to have a business strategy for MMO's on consoles. If you are a Star Wars fan, be excited...if your a KOTOR fan, try not to be too disappointed by this news. KOTOR is popular for a reason, so much that bastardization of the franchise will only result in Epic fail.

If this game doesn't have the dialogue trees of the first 2 then I will be extremely dissapointed.

More than ever though I want to be the center of the entire story like in kotor 1/2, not some noname nodoby like in an MMO. I want to see bastila and co again.

Grrr, why couldn't they just make kotor 3 THEN turn it into an MMO.

This is extreamly disappointing, I love Knights of the Old Republic, but I hate MMOs so I am afraid I will not be playing it.

It's sad really because Bioware could have done some Epic things on todays consoles with a third Knights but now it seems they are completely brushing off 1 and 2, and their console fans that do not play PC games.

All I can say is that it looks like I will never see what happend with Revan, or play another Kotor.

I don't mind either way. But Kotor 3 would have been fantastic, and there is always a chance that an MMO will suck hard. Lucas have not made a good game since Jedi Knight 2 so I hope they are not too heavily involved, and do Bioware have any mmo experience? I don't think so. As always I hope I'm wrong and this game turns out to be amazing.

I think EA had a hand in Bioware making this a MMO instead of a single player. Blizzard has made so much money off of WoW, it's ridiculous. The thing that pisses me off is that started this storyline, that in my opinion, exceeds ALL 6 Star Wars movies combined, and they're just going to leave that hanging. Revan, I believe, is one of the most powerful Sith Lords ever, and an equally powerful Exile, are left out to dry.

They should have made a KOTOR 3, finished off that particular story, and then move on to the MMO part. That's like Peter Jackson making the first 2 Lord of the Rings movies, and never making Return of the King. These companies are seeing the amount of money Blizzard is making off WoW, and they want to replicate that success. They know a popular game like KOTOR would sell a lot of copies on the Xbox 360 and PS3. But if they made it an MMO, they sell not only the games, but collect a monthly fee too. There is still room for a KOTOR 3, which is what a lot of people wanted from the damn start. I'm excited, but pissed at the same time.
