NPD: PCs More Popular Than Any One Console; PS3 Owners Most Likely to Have Multiple Consoles

The PC is the most popular platform for gaming and PlayStation 3 owners are more likely to have multiple consoles, according to the results of the Games Segmentation 2008 report from sales tracking and marketing research firm The NPD Group.

Though PCs were "used more than any single console for gaming," NPD stressed that "Console Gamers, Young Heavy Gamers and Extreme Gamers are more likely to use consoles than a PC to play video games."

In addition to stating that PlayStation 3 owners are most likely to have other "next-generation" consoles than Wii and Xbox 360 owners, NPD claims only 10% of PS2 owners have a PS3. In the realm of portables, 45% of PSP owners have a Nintendo DS, but only 21% of DS owners have a PSP.

There is no way that the wii isn't in the lead for owners having multiple consoles...There isn't one person that I know that owns a wii, that didn't buy another next gen console (including myself). Sure the wii has it's gimmicky controls and cheaper price point, but after the novelty wore off, I went out (like almost everyone else I know) and bought another console as I wasn't happy with the lack of "quality" games from the wii.

PS3 has a 2% flop-rate on its gaming library whereas the 360 has a 10%+ flop-rate. You really got me with that huge AAA library...

PS3 also has a 9% AAA rate and the 360 has a 10% AAA rate.

I purchased a 360 after I purchased my PS3 because I wanted to play the 360 exclusives - simple as that. I am completely satisfied with my PS3 and its exclusives as well. Now when I buy multi-platform games I choose based on which one has the better version.

Example:

I bought Soul Calibur 4 on PS3 because I like the PS3's DPAD better.
I bought Orange Box on 360 because the PS3 version was garbage.
etc ... etc.

I have both consoles because that is what true gamers do - they like to play ALL great games regardless of system.

Well, I have a PS3 and I don't have any other system.... I could have bought both the 360 and the Wii if I wanted them bad enough, but, I think I'll stick to just one console.

If I ever did buy a 360, I would only get it for the exclusives and the PS3 would be my primary system... the 360's failure rate is a big turn off for me though... and if I ever bought a 360 I would only get the Elite because I like the Black colored look much better and not the White 360's... but at $449.99, the Elite isn't worth the price to me, especially with No Blu-ray and No Built in Wifi.. the Elite model should be selling at $349.99 and then the price would be justifiable.

10% of PS2 owners only having PS3's sounds about right because the PS3 is around 14.5 million sold and there's been over 140 million PS2's sold... but I wonder how many people with Original Xbox's have 360s... since the 360 is coming close to the Original Xbox's worldwide installbase, I think that around 70-80% of Original Xbox owners have 360's.

I owned a Wii before a PS3 and a 360, but PS3 was always by choice of primary console, but only because it was released before the PS3 here.

I only bought a 360 for Mass Effect. In fact, of the 5 games I own for 360 4 are exclusive and 2 came with the console by default. I don't use it for my main gaming, but no way am I going to miss Mass Effect and Fable 2.

That said, I usually buy Nintendo consoles as "secondary" since the PlayStation came out, but since I hate the Wii, Microsoft have moved to my "secondary" place.

Similar with me, i preferred n64 over ps1, then i got a dreamcast and loved it, then i got a ps2 loved it even more, i got the first xbox cause i loved DOA3, then i got a Gamecube only for the resident evils, than the ps2 stopped reading discs and that really pissed me off, traded the ps2 in for ninja gaiden.

Any now that you know most of my gaming history, the only reason i got a wii was because of smash bros. I am on my third 360 so im not too fond of xbox right now either. For me ps3 is king right now.

I'm over the age of 28 fully employed and "I know" more people with Wii's then PS3 and 360 in my age group. I consider NONE of them gamers nor do they consider themselves gamers. Most of the people "I know" with PS3's also have a 360, and a PS2. The people "I know" that are only 360 owners are usually younger (10-22) then me and/or are dependent/living with their parents or are in transition to full employment.

Also most of the PC owners "I know" range in age (14-65) and typically are on some type mmorpg. So they on average will spend MUCH more time playing because mmorpg gamers have "Pause Evny" meaning they don't have that oh so handy dandy pause buttons that most single player games have. They typically will be engaged for a gaming session that could put console gamers to shame.

I think that a LOT of PS2 gamers went to 360 for the early next gen experience and over time and with age will eventually purchase a PS3 for a total next gen experience to play all the best games. I just don't understand the success of the Wii at all.

These numbers would be very different if the PS3 was cheaper. Sony REALLY needs to get on reducing console prices (which I am sure they are) but they have ALOT to worry about.

I fit into the article, I was a Wii owner first then got a PS3. I don't plan on getting an xbox, I have thought about it and every time I do I cannot name alot of games I would get for xbox. Bioshock and Mass Effect is all, and Bioshock is getting an updated port so no worries there.

I was always a multiple console owner. Bought on this order: MSX1, MSX2, Atari, Telejogo, NES (Phantom System), Master System, SNES, 3DO, Genesis, N64, PS1, DC, PS2, XB, PS3, PSP. (as you can see, I made some comebacks)

Still, those new toys are freaking overpriced (all of them).

PS3 was nowhere cheap. Worth in my opinion (so much that I bought it, Sony better thanks all of they devs because GOW, SotC and such were soooo great), but it was too much money anyway, they don't have a chance on getting PS2 like numbers in their current state. They are not even competitive at this price, even with some great games already, they would be damned without brand name.

Wii is a Gamecube in desguise with a new controller, I passed GC before because Ninty games was getting crapier with the time and, by the time, they don't have 3rd party support. Now they have, but it still sux... They have some good games again, but there is no way I'm buying Wii to play only Metroid and Zack & Wiki.

But 360... Thanks to this one I still scratching my head. It comes a bit mroe cheap than the PS3, but with less features... 'till there, OK. But what about games? I can name only a few that I want and can't play either on PC or on PS3. In a matter of fact, those games are 3, two of which I just played on my local rental store (pay per play): Kameo, Ninja Gaiden 2. The other one is Fable. So it's 300 dolars for a system so I can play 3 games? Alan Wake looks cool, but nowhere to see... I don't like Halo 3 and Gears. 360 have JRPG (Tales and Star Oceans are the only ones I'm looking for) but those look to eventually come to PS3...

So I really think it's time for another console. Still, they are not cheap enough to "give a try"... If you have a PS3 you really don't see that much incentive to have a 360 and I believe that the other way around is truth too, if you have a 360, you really don't see the need of a PS3 to compensate the price of more on console (not to say games for two console, each game costs 60 dolars, I barely can stand buying what I want for ONE console).

On the article, I should say I know way more 360 buyers thar bought a PS3 (RROD) than the other way around. They really should measure this before stating PS3 owners are multiple console owners... They don't exactly state where those people bought a PS3 first and feel the need to a Wii/360, or if they bought a 360/Wii and was not satisfied and bought a PS3.

Consoles should just remain a console, i disagree with what Sony and MS are doing with playing movies and music on their systems. I hope Nintendo doesnt give in as well, just because they are doing it. I have played PC games in the past, mainly online games like Jedi Knight and Quake and dont see the reason for still playing PC games. Thats just me though, i have always preferrred console games to PC games. I just dont like it thats all. I have too many game systems enough as it is, why would i want to make it more confusing. I miss the days of the NES when it was simple. You had 1 console and just games only, it was a much simpler time along with everthing else.
